In collaboration with a doctor at Yale I wrote this paper which has been published in the Journal of Singing and NATS. Within it I explain that the processes of vocal technique, breath, posture, and mindfulness, are powerful tools to facilitate the return to the body after a traumatic event,or a history of trauma. It creates an extra set of challenges for the student, however when worked through it can lead to extraordinary results. With the musical life enhancing the connection to the body, community, and something larger than ourselves, we can use music as a powerful tool for healing - and there is no more effective way to do that than by singing. Yin Yoga is a passive, meditative, slow-paced style of Yoga. The postures are mainly floor-based and are typically held for between 2-5 minutes, Physically, by holding the postures for this length we are able to access the deep connective tissue, targeting the fascia, tendons, and ligaments. Energetically, Yin Yoga improves the flow of energy (or chi) in the body. This helps to release blockages or stagnation in the meridian lines (energy centers taught in Chinese Medicine). Because the postures are held for a long period of time, breath awareness and mindfulness are large parts of Yin Yoga. As you hold the postures I will guide you through meditation, mindfulness and breathwork practices.
