What do you love to listen to? How do you create music that expresses the music that has deeply influenced you? The "how do you create that" is where technique, or music theory, shapes what compels you. There are a variety of techniques because there are a variety of sound possibilities (jazz, rock, classical, etc.). "In order to create that" music in your head, the basics of music have to be learned: pitch and rhythmical relationships. The most basic examples of pitch relationships are melody and harmony. If my availability works, I will gladly take in anyone who desires to explore all the basics and beyond. I greatly hope that any student considering lessons will read all of the information provided about myself on Apprentus. I will not begin a lesson with any student who does not answer the first five questions. Now, I believe I've covered enough ground for potential students to understand what my lessons will be about. So for now... enjoy the sounds and Au revoir!

This is a hands-on surgical exploration into what great songs are and how to create them - from lyrics to music. Great songs are not merely popular songs, or catchy songs, or best-selling songs - great songs are enduring creations that stand the test of time, and which cross all boundaries of genre and style. In order to create them, we need a unique combination of skills and sensitivities - the ability to execute our ideas effectively on an accompaniment instrument of our choice, whether piano, guitar, organ, harp or other almost always polyphonic (multiple sounding) instruments - but equally the ability to craft poetic and compelling lyrics that are neither cliche nor predictable, and not least, the ability to create effective rhyme patterns without compromising either the original intent or flow of the song. In truth, creating a great song is as or more difficult than creating a great story, because it requires the meeting and melding of word and music in a mutually resonant way. In this quest, the class will enlighten beginning as well as seasoned songwriters on harmonic vocabularies available to them, basic musical resources such as rhythmic figures and variation techniques, basic and advanced song structures, from Bach to the Beatles to Bernstein, and perfecting the art of lyric-writing. Students will learn both fundamental notations so they may present their songs in a true musical format, as well as short cuts enabling them to sketch ideas in a simple form when in the heat of creation. Vocal ranges, transposing, vocal and instrumental ranges will be addressed so that students create songs capable of being sung by either professionals or amateurs.
I teach Old-Time fiddle, beginning and intermediate level. I prefer students who have some experience with fiddle, violin, or bowed string instruments, but I will accept students with no experience, too. To make the most of your learning experience, weekly, one-hour lessons are highly encouraged. I will teach you fiddle bowing techniques, cross tuning, low tuning, learning tunes from ear, jam etiquette, the social aspects of Old-Time music, as well as some history of the tunes and the source fiddlers. My specialty is cross-over students, especially those coming from a background in classical music. Can't get your violin to sound like a fiddle? I can help.

I work for hands on with workshopping vocal choices and bringing out different colors and tones in the student's voice.

Trusted teacher: This course is for viola and violin students from the beginner through the high school level. My goal is for my students to foster a healthy and long-term relationship with their instrument. The course focuses on practicing and truly understanding technique, with an emphasis on listening. Weekly assignments tend to include technical exercises, scales, and classical pieces of the student's choice. Basic improvisation is also an interest of mine and, I find, a valuable experience for my string students. I believe repertoire is largely a matter of student taste. Students of mine have learned pieces in the Suzuki books and other classical repertoire volumes, but have also learned pop and fiddle songs according to their interest. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from the University of Puget Sound, where I graduated in 2015 before moving to Vienna to study privately for three years. I am currently in the Master of Viola Performance degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where I study with Ásdís Valdimarsdottir. I have been teaching violin intermittently since 2009. While my musical education is classical, my performance interests are much wider. I have performed jazz and pop improv, and am currently exploring how hip hop can be implemented on the viola and violin.

I have over 10 years of experience teaching guitar, bass, and drums in both individual and group settings. Through goal setting and incremental improvements, you'll be able to track your progress and feel a sense of accomplishment as you develop a deep understanding of your instrument(s). We can work together via webcam or in-home and I'm confident that your musicianship and music theory knowledge will both improve quickly. While I feel certain techniques are essential for all students to learn, I enjoy working with students on all styles of music and encourage a wide variety of genres for both listening and practicing purposes. Rock, pop, blues, jazz, southern rock, classical and funk are a few of my personal favorites to play and teach with. I spent the last 5 years teaching at the School of Rock, in New Jersey. This experience greatly helped to shape my teaching into being both engaging and efficient. My time there also helped me to develop my own personal practice habits, as well as see different routes to helping students learn, when one method may seem overwhelming at first. I'm looking forward to working with more students from my hometown in Virginia, as well as online students from around the world. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out to me!

I specialize in tutoring beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of Music Theory. As a current student at The Berklee College of Music and a long-time violinist, pianist, guitarist, and professional vocalist, I not only have a deep understanding to share about the ins and outs of music theory, I carry a passion for this particular art form as well. Even with the most basic knowledge of music theory, students can find themselves able to play various instruments without having picked them up in the past and extensively understand pieces of music that they may be challenged to play or listen to. My goal is to help students remain curious and share the development of passion that has potential to come with learning the language of music.

I teach the clarinet, flute and saxophone for more than 30 years and proudly can say that I helped to improve and gave a new professional path to the hundreds of students in US and overseas. I am holding a Master’s degree from St. Petersburg State Conservatory (Russia), where I studied clarinet and saxophone. St. Petersburg State Conservatory, where I picked up saxophone in addition to studying clarinet. Simultaneously, I worked as a principal clarinetist at the St.Peterburg Symphony Orchestra. Not long after, I won second place in the All-Union USSR Clarinet Competition. Upon graduating from the Conservatory, I worked as the principal clarinetist in Kiev’s State Opera House and soon after was offered a position as a clarinet and saxophone professor at my alma mater, Kiev State R.M. Gliere Higher College of Music. If you want to learn to play the clarinet, flute or saxophone - and more so if your daughter or son does - the most promising way is to find a good teacher and take lessons. Learning to play a musical instrument like the clarinet, flute or saxophone is more than an intellectual process, that you may manage by abstract learning. Very much alike when learning to play the instruments there are a lot of things (how to sit, hold the instrument, your embouchure, how to breathe and move relaxed, how to control a tone) to train simultaneously and these things ought to be checked. The beginning can be difficult, and you can do a lot of things really wrong (and get used to that). Especially for the first hours it is worth to have a good teacher. I am looking forward to teaching you music!

Trusted teacher: I have been well trained in classical guitar performance under the master class instruction of Arthur Kampela, a renowned classical guitarist and composer from Brazil. I am also well studied in Western music history and music theory. I have studied rumba-flamenca in South America, and have performed fusion jazz music as well as unconventional guitar pieces. My teaching combines theoretical analysis and technique improvements. For beginners, I aim to teach and reinforce correct left-hand position and movement along the frets, and effective right-hand picking. For intermediate players I aim to adjust technique details to improve the student's control over emotions of the music while playing, and share my approach to blending Latin and flamenco stylistic features with classical guitar. I base my lessons on properly challenging classical masterpieces, and I ensure the student's progress by assigning after-class practices. I also make sure my lessons go smoothly in an encouraging and relaxed atmosphere! Availability: always available through webcam; face-to-face tutoring available throughout the year except from mid May to late August.
