My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instil a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student. Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you. A bit about me: Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The only requirement is the willingness to spend some time at the piano. I conduct my lessons using a combination of 4 cameras for optimum visibility, and a quality microphone which my students find very helpful. CURRICULUM I do not believe one method works for all students. I have used many different lesson books and resources over the years. For beginners I like to use Alfred method books for basics concepts and for Classical and Jazz Piano technique I like to use ABRSM books (grade 1-8). If my student feels that they can learn better from another books, I am glad to adapt my teaching strategies to their needs. Along with the lesson books below, I use a lot of supplemental materials based on the students' interests. I also aim to teach their favorite songs as soon as possible. My courses are based on the Irish teaching method so first of all to the ear, on the resources that the student has in himself and on the fact that one learns while having fun. I propose a harp lesson: - Medieval dedicated to teenagers and adults for false beginner and intermediate based on medieval music and rebirth, improvisation, arrangement of melodies, ... - Celtic for all ages from 14 to 70 years, beginner level, false beginner, intermediate and intermediate / advanced based on Celtic repertoire and Irish, Scottish and Breton techniques After a few lessons, the neo-harpists will play short and simple melodies until the end of the journey to play more complete melodies that provide accompaniment and use of both hands. Lessons are defined on the learning needs of individual students. Even if I use the Irish teaching method, I will provide the basis for reading the pentagram, for the integration of rhythm, the foundations of harmony so that the student can read a piece of music independently. I live in Italy, so I come back to Belgium about once a month for face-to-face lessons (duration of face-to-face lesson: 90 minutes). As i am just about to start harp lessons, we had a first ''lesson' in which Mélanie advised me extensively about the types of harps that I should consider getting/renting,and explained her pedagogy and the type of music she specializes in, which is exactly what I would like to take up. She explained some aspects of the repertoire (such as the fact that for older music we often have only a melody line surviving, so the accompaniment involves improvisation). She is extremely friendly and helpful, organized and clearly at home with teaching online, which she had been doing in part before the lockdown. I look forward to having the first 'real' lesson once I have a harp to play on.

It's a joy to work with Katie, she has a lovely personality and a very flexible teaching style. Apart from being a good pianist I value the fact that she is able to put music into context.
