Trusted teacher: I am a friendly, patient and professional Piano, Composition and DJ teacher from London, currently living near Amsterdam. I began composition lessons with Darren Bloom at Forest School and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where I graduated with a BMus in Composition in 2015. I am now studying for a Masters degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Richard Ayres and Wim Henderickx. My previous teachers include Richard Causton, Edwin Roxburgh, Ed Bennett, Joe Cutler and Howard Skempton. I have also taken part in masterclasses with Mario Garuti and Colin Matthews. I was the winner of the Orchestre Nouvelle Generation Composers Competition 2016/17, and the Birmingham Conservatoire Orchestral Composition Prize 2015. My scores are held in the Royal Academy of Music and American Viola Society libraries, and my pieces have been performed in various locations throughout Europe, the USA, Canada and South Africa. In addition to classical composition, I have also completed a number of scores for short films, and composed the soundtrack for Marianna Jungman's show at London Fashion Week in 2014. Other collaborators include Jeff Leyshon, Andrew Delaney, Zena Holloway and New York-based photographer Graeme Montgomery. I have been commissioned to write soundtracks for Japanese Vogue, and Cent Magazine. For DJing I specialise in Techno, Dubstep and Drum & Bass music. I was taught by Noah Priddle and Kasey Riot at the London Sound Academy where I completed a course in 2017. Teaching Experience: From 2009-2011 I taught Drumkit to students aged between 10-15 at a local Rock & Pop School. I've also been involved in a number of music courses for children between 2009-2014 as a Supervisor / Sound Technician. In 2016 I began giving private lessons, and built up a group of over 20 pupils ranging from 5 year olds to adults. Between April-July 2017, I also gave private and small-group music lessons at a local primary school. Approach to Teaching: My philosophy in Music Tuition is to improve the student's technique through exercises and pieces which they enjoy. I also provide a general music education as I believe in a holistic approach, and increasing their passion for music which will increase their motivation for practice and improvement.

Trusted teacher: Hello! I am an Amsterdam based musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts. Currently a masters composition student under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, I have a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I completed all of the harmony and counterpoint electives, and prior to this was accepted into Chetham’s School of Music as a joint principle study composer and trumpet player. I gained my ABRSM grade 8 piano at this time, after obtaining my grade 8 cornet 3 years prior. I have won multiple awards, including the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition in 2013, and my varied and diverse music has been played by ensembles such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, and European Youth Brass Band; broadcast on radio and television both nationally in the UK and internationally; and performed for royalty and at events such as the BBC Proms and the Total BWF Badminton World Championships. Furthermore, I am also passionate about conducting others works as well as my own, rehearsing ensembles of all standards, ages, and varieties, organising events, as well as tutoring – a former pupil gaining a place at a prestigious specialist music school in the UK before going on to study at a conservatoire. I have been described as clear and inspiring, being able to give students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moment when I felt unsure with what to do.” I also enjoy my work as a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, which involves assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers. Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. Once the basics are mastered, students begin to focus more on harmony and counterpoint, examining and learning to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Contrary to popular belief, music theory isn't boring! Please contact me to chat about your (child’s) musical goals and ambitions. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on screen. Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon! Thomas

Violin and Viola lessons in Amsterdam with Maya (Amsterdam)
Maya
Our first lesson was an exploration of the feeling of holding the viola and the bow and of playing some notes pizzicato and with the bow. Maya was enthusiastic, patient and flexible in adapting to what I could and wanted to try. Her calm approach (letting learning sink in, allowing a process of getting used to the playing and learning) made me feel very comfortable and inspired!

violin/viola lessons with a professional teacher for all ages (Amsterdam)
Aida Alvarez
Aida is really nice and patient. She takes time to understand the level of her students and explains clearly how to play this such difficult instrument, and also she makes you feel confident when you hold the bow for the very first time. Looking forward for my next classes with her.
