Toby - Berlin29€
Trusted teacher: Hi there, my name is Toby and I’m a professional music theory, violin and viola teacher based in Berlin. I teach in person both at students' location and at my location as well as online. As well as regular instrumental teaching and ensemble coaching of all age groups and levels, I’ve led numerous professional workshops, including ‘Music First’ and ‘Music Masters’ workshops in London and was an assistant on the Primary Arpeggione viola course and Springgrove music competition. I teach in English, Russian, French and German and am trained in a variety of methods, including Suzuki, regularly preparing students for music exams at all levels. I am currently a member of the European String Teachers’ Association, and have participated in ESTA conferences across Europe. I also regularly accompany students on the piano, and work on music theory, aural and sight reading skills for exams, including on grades in theory and academic exams across all stages. As a performing musician, I've played as a soloist in venues across Europe and participated in several international competitions, notably receiving the Barbirolli prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition 2019. I was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2018, and a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain from 2014-2015, appearing on BBC Radio 3 broadcasts and a televised BBC Prom, as well as being involved in the NYO outreach programme ‘inspire’ in schools across London, including workshops and interactive performances at the Royal Festival Hall. Testimonials: Tatyana M. Toby is a fantastic teacher. He is very reliable as he is consistently organised and punctual. I constantly see progress in my child’s music skills because every lesson Toby delivers is effective and well-structured. I highly recommend him to all who wish to learn or improve on their music skills. Pamela B. Toby is really a great teacher, who teaches pieces well and teases out the feeling while playing. We particularly liked that. Good technique is one thing, but feeling the music is such an important element in music and in learning a piece of music. He also teaches theory very well! Hanna S. Toby can explain things very well and understandably, is patient and friendly and easily adapts to the level of the student More below

Trusted teacher: Hello, My name is Kevin, and I am a passionate guitar player from Austin Texas, based here in Berlin. I grew up studying classical guitar and playing rock guitar (Austin is a great city for rock!), before studying Jazz at the prestigious Thornton School of Music at USC in Los Angeles. I have been performing since the age of six, with solo and group performances in various cities across America, including Los Angeles, New York, and Washington DC. In addition to this, I have been teaching guitar for over 10 years. I am currently furthering my studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin focusing back on my first love, the classical guitar! As a teacher, my focus is always on the individual student: what are your specific passions, strengths, and weaknesses, and what are your goals? How can I tailor our lessons to get us there? How can we have fun? In addition to this, with all my students I work to cultivate a strong and reliable technical ability. A good technique is important. It lays a strong foundation for everything and gives you the tools to truly express yourself musically. I am happy to teach any style (except Reggae because... Nah just kidding) and all experience levels. Beginners are so very welcome! Here are some of my focuses: - Fingerstyle: classical and folk style - Plectrum style, strumming, and single note - Improvisation (and all of its many applications!) - Scales, chords, and arpeggios - Advanced application of music theory - Intuitive understanding of rhythm, along with odd time signatures - Ear training (identifying notes and chords simply by hearing them) - Music reading - Using equipment to craft tones for electric guitar (amps and effects) - Practical understanding of recording software, which is both a wonderful creative tool and vital for professional purposes. I teach out of my apartment in Friedrichshain/Prenzlauer Berg. So let's get started! Cheers, Kevin

Toby
Toby is an outstanding instructor and works with children very naturally. My 11 year old son has been taking lessons with Toby for over two months and is eager for each lesson. Toby is extremely talented, but beyond that, he engages my son deeply with the music itself, fundamental techniques, music theory, and even the interpretation of the music. Toby is kind, encouraging, and works with students at a level that is appropriate. He has allowed my son to chose music that if fun and interesting to practice, even though the pieces are challenging. We are located many time zones away from Toby, and the virtual lessons do not hinder our experience with him. In fact, I often sit in to listen to the lessons, as they are so good. My son has had a couple of lessons with Toby while company has been over, and everyone has commented on how amazing Toby is as an instructor. I can not recommend Toby enough and hope to continue lessons with him for a long time.

Native English piano lessons from experienced tutor (Berlin)
Jack
I’m so lucky that I was able to have lessons with Jack during my time in Berlin! He creates such a supportive environment for learning — laid back and calm, yet totally professional. After years of me struggling independently with a few pieces, he was able to show me new ways of approaching the music that transformed even the hardest parts into something accessible. He has a lovely and genuine way of offering encouragement / recognizing progress, while still keeping track of the underlying objective; a more far-reaching arc of improvement. I like how he remembers this larger perspective from week to week (especially when I forget), and finds ways to expertly weave the end goal into incremental, manageable steps. I have learned so much from the tools and techniques he’s shared with me, and am grateful to have enjoyed his teaching.
