Guitar/Bass/Ukulele Lessons! Over 15 years of teaching experience

Guitar/Bass/Ukulele Lessons! Over 15 years of teaching experience

My main teaching philosophy is to teach students to play the music they enjoy. It sounds like a no-brainer but I have had teachers in the past who only showed me songs that they enjoyed or used method books that teach you "Mary Had A Little Lamb" or "Hot Crossed Buns" (and if you like those songs then we can learn those). All that to say, whatever the student's goal on the instrument, I will take them step by step until they reach it. For a beginning musician, the fundamentals of the instrument are given the highest priority: how to tune your instrument, names of all the notes, essential chords, basic strumming, playing in time, and understanding basic rhythm. For someone who already plays but needs a little help getting out of the rut, we'll spend time fixing bad technical habits, hammering home the fundamentals, expanding their repertoire, and slowly moving outside of the comfort zone to new horizons. With advanced players, listening (ear training), transcribing, song analysis, exploring advanced theory concepts, and focusing on composition and improvisation are most important. With all levels of students, I make playlists that I update after each lesson so they can hear real examples of what we are covering, as well as provide detailed written notes in TAB and standard notation so they can refer to everything we covered and know what to practice. Also, it's fun!

Piano lessons in Berlin for beginners to advanced students with a graduate of the Mozarteum and the UdK.

Piano lessons in Berlin for beginners to advanced students with a graduate of the Mozarteum and the UdK.

German below - I started learning piano at the age of five and was lucky enough to work with the same teacher for thirteen years. During my university years at the University Mozarteum Salzburg and the University of the Arts Berlin, I had the chance to experience different teachers and approaches to music. Through this, I came to understand how important it is to find a teacher you connect with, and how our needs can change throughout our musical journey. In my teaching, I prioritize giving my students the tools they need to become independent musicians themselves: knowing how to practice effectively, improving their sight-reading skills (which opens up an entire library of music), understanding their own strengths and areas where they can improve, and building a solid foundation of basic music theory as far as it is relevant for their piano playing. A typical lesson looks like this: we start with a warm-up, review the previous week's practice, work on current repertoire, and set clear goals for the week ahead. I focus on helping students approach new music with more understanding and confidence. At the same time, I feel that individuality can sometimes be overlooked in the process of improving as musicians. For me, it is equally important to leave space for creativity, through improvisation, exploring different interpretation options, listening to different recordings, and discovering different repertoire or musical styles. My aim is to help my students learn new music with greater understanding and confidence. At the same time, I feel that one's own individuality sometimes gets neglected in the process of musical development. For me, it's just as important to create space for creativity through improvisation, trying out different interpretations, listening to various recordings, and discovering different repertoires or musical styles.

A professional harpist with a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Harp offers both in - person and online lessons for all skill levels.

A professional harpist with a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Harp offers both in - person and online lessons for all skill levels.

First and foremost, at the beginning of each journey, I highly value getting to know and listen to the student's needs and the objectives they aim to achieve. This way, I can establish a teaching method tailored to each individual right from the start. Throughout the lessons, I focus on both refining the instrument's technique (especially if the student is a beginner, initially dedicating a significant amount of time and energy to understand which technique suits their hand and subjectivity best) and enhancing musical expressiveness, ease in performance, and addressing the specific needs that vary from student to student. I also consider it extremely important to work on a classical repertoire while simultaneously discovering the student's musical preferences. I am very open to accommodating the student's requests while highlighting prominent composers and pieces within the repertoire. Central to my teaching approach is the student - teacher dialogue during the lesson, which I believe is crucial for an effective, serene, and formative learning experience. Moreover, I offer lessons aimed at preparing the student for a potential competition, conservatory audition, or orchestra performance.

“ Javier is an incredible teacher! He is not just teaching me piano, but really helping me to understand how music is structured and the reasons behind compositional choices. A very generous and experienced teacher, who is dedicated to broadening my music horizons and improving my playing freedom. I can highly recommend him, especially for intermediate players like myself who feel a bit lost and are looking for structure and direction. ”

“ I had a great first lesson using Ableton! Niki spent time helping me with my equipment set-up and also went through some of the settings with me. He explained things very clearly, answered my questions and showed me some of the basic things necessary to find my way as a beginner using Ableton. I now have a few things to try out and I'm excited to start experimenting and seeing what I can record. Thanks Niki! ”

“ Andrea is a talented musician and music teacher. He tailored my first lesson with him to my skill and experience level and left me with exercises and insights into music theory to build on for our next lesson.I'm greatly looking forward to my next lesson! ”
