This doesn't mean playing jazz or funk perfectly; rather, it's about expanding students' musical knowledge, presenting the evolution of the drums, and introducing them to new groups and styles. With this approach, I try to guide students in the style they want to explore, helping them discover the origins of that particular music. Ultimately, I equip students with the tools and skills to begin transcribing music independently. On the one hand, I teach key concepts for recognizing structures, the beginnings and ends of musical phrases, time signatures, basic rhythms, and so on. This doesn't necessarily involve music theory. We feel so lucky to have found Laura as my daughter’s violin teacher. Not only is she a skilled musician, she’s a wonderful instructor who is able to effectively engage with young kids (my daughter was four when she started lessons). I’ve observed Laura as both structured and flexible — her lessons are planned with purpose, but she also has back-up ideas if a kid’s energy isn’t a good match for the day’s agenda. I love seeing my daughter’s skill and confidence grow in such a warm, supportive learning environment. I wholeheartedly recommend lessons with Laura for any child interested in exploring the violin!
