Composition with Tom – Create Your Own Unique Music

Hello!

I am a musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts.

As a composer I have a diverse range of skills. Whilst most of my work is contemporary classical concert music, I have a good grounding in tonal harmony and am experienced in writing music more typical of past eras and for events such as opening ceremonies and medals ceremonies. I also have knowledge of jazz, having worked in this genre.

Lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways to deal with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and development of ideas.

Please contact me to chat about your/ your child’s musical goals and ambitions and to arrange a lesson. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on screen.

Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon!

About Me

Huddersfield born composer Thomas has worked with organizations such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Nieuw Ensemble, Aurora Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, European Youth Brass Band, and Neon - Choir for Newest Music. Furthermore, his music has been performed at the BBC Proms and broadcast on national radio in both the UK and Netherlands. In 2016 musicians joined together to perform in a concert containing a selection of his chamber music and in 2017 his music formed part of the medals ceremonies of the Total BWF Badminton World Championships and Scottish Open Badminton Grand Prix, the former tournament broadcast to over 0.6 billion people worldwide. HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex was in attendance and requested to meet Thomas, as he’d heard another of his works in 2012. At the age of 15 he arranged music for Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts.

Whilst Thomas believes it important to write what one wishes to hear, his music aims to be appealing to general audiences and “accessible”, yet still original and innovative. He regularly experiments with jazz harmony and polystylism and has enjoyed writing works which have a sense of energy and forward momentum throughout, as well as ones of a more relaxed nature. His current interests include using tonal harmony in new ways and bright sounds, in terms of both harmony and timbre. One of his idols is the Austrian composer HK Gruber, whose music he has recently completed a paper on.

Thomas studied with Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (generously supported by Moose International) following completion of undergraduate studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Prior to this, he was a student at Chetham’s School of Music, at which time he won the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition and was awarded the Douglas Steele Award.

Conducting is another passion of Thomas’s; he enjoys directing his own works as well as others with student, professional, youth, and amateur ensembles and orchestras, including championship section brass bands. He grew up playing cornet and trumpet in brass bands, big bands, orchestras, and other ensembles. He also plays piano, has appeared as a percussionist at events such as the British and Scottish Open Brass Band Championships, and tutors a wide range of students. Mentoring is also part of his role as a BBC Proms Inspire Ambassador. He enjoys undertaking arts leadership roles and in 2017 ran a composers’ orchestral workshop at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

“Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moments when I felt unsure with what to do.”

What Inspires Me?

As a composer, I am inspired by many people from many different eras. As part of my master's, I recently completed a paper on the harmony within orchestral music by living Austrian composer HK Gruber and my current composition work includes experimenting with jazz harmony. Another modern composer who has inspired me is Alfred Schnittke. I enjoy his harsh juxtaposition of styles.

When learning about traditional tonal harmony and counterpoint, the music of J.S. Bach is the place to start and it has had a big influence on my contemporary concert work, although of course there are many composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Reger, to name a few - who followed Bach and developed tonal language further, using it in different ways.

As a player, I play a wide range of music from different eras. A large chunk of my background was playing cornet in brass bands, although I have also played orchestral, big band, and chamber music. My favorite trumpet player is probably Allen Vizzutti, a very versatile classical and jazz American musician, with phenomenal technical abilities.

He is great teacher. My kids really enjoyed his lessons! I highly recommend him.
Hello! I am a musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts. Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. Once the basics are mastered, students begin to focus more on harmony and counterpoint, examining and learning to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Contrary to popular belief, music theory isn't boring! Guitar / Bass / Ukulele / Theory
The course that I propose is BILINGUAL FRENCH / ENGLISH, as well as 2 BOOKS. Age and musical taste are not restrictive when in the program, you can with qualitative daily work (not quantitative) quickly observe your progress. Here the pleasure of playing music is put forward. The kind of music you love most will be the focus of the course, their codes and secrets will be the focus of our study, that's what I want to share with you. We can do technical lessons and simply learn together how to play one or more songs of your choice or mine, enrich your game with this approach and your repertoire! (For example, We can re-arrange the pieces and make them more original by approaching the system (CAGED), and enriching their chords, resulting in new positions, new techniques and new sounds, using arpeggio techniques rather than strumming for 4-chord pieces, voicing and fingerstyle techniques, in short, expanding the instrument's playing fields and playing skills to keep progressing in your game and improve your rehearsals ...) If you make a request, this program is obviously accompanied by the pleasure of learning more in theory and being able to directly apply new knowledge on its instrument and identify its common or rare use in the pieces discussed in class. In this case, the theory is translated to be accessible to anyone, both for those who are connoisseurs and for those who discover everything from absolute zero. The exercises, songs, and theoretical explanations offered throughout the program are organized in an order of progressive difficulty. I wrote and produced 2 books of my method to learn the guitar and the music, that I sell to accompany my course and your apprenticeship in the best conditions and so that you can continue the course even at home and to review etc ... . There is ONE BOOK OF COURSES containing all the theoretical and practical program of the year, as well as a BOOK OF EXERCISE on the ranges and the modes that you can obtain directly. You can find here an indicative list of objectives that I propose in my theoretical program, which can of course adapt to your request. The general theoretical objectives of the course: --- Tuning / tuning and knowing his guitar: * Standard Tuning * Drop Tuning * Open Tuning * Adjust the optimal tension of the strings * Adjust the shaft axis * Adjust the action of the strings * Choose the strings adapted to the style of play / tuning * Change his strings -Know his chords: * Triads: Fundamental State & Inversions * Tetrads: Fundamental State & Inversions * The chord progressions of the Range * Arpeggio techniques (tapping, sweep, 1/2/4 fing.shape, etc ...) --- Know his scales and his modes * The Mode of the Major scale * 3 Modes of the Minor scale: Natural / Melodic / Harmonic * Modes of the Pentatonic range: 5 positions * Modes of the Blues range: 5 positions Etc ... --- Technique to the Pick / Plectrum / Tab / Pick (Electric Guitar): * Alternate Picking * Fast Picking / Tremolo Picking * Hybrid Picking * Palm Mute * Natural Harmonics * Pinch Harmonics * Artificial Harmonics * Shredding * Tapping * Sweep Picking * Legato Picking --- Strumming / Hand Picking (Acoustic Guitar) * "SnareDrum" percussion on the guitar * Arpeggios pinched with 4 fingers + thumb * Rasgueado (Flamenco Technique) * Generic Strumming * Fingerstyle Picking * Two-finger picking + Legato for fast melodies (eg a solo) -Play the metronome * exercises on click * practice on song riffs -Learn his favorite songs * without thinking about the difficulty, nothing is impossible with the right methodology -Improvise * choose ranges and positions * to place oneself rhythmically, to finish on the judicious notes -Theory of Harmony * Understand harmonization and its practice -Theory on the Melody -Theory of Rhythm

I am a guitar teacher from Edinburgh, Scotland with a strong focus on developing practical musicianship and enjoyment of playing the guitar. I have many years experience playing in live bands and can help you in many ways with developing your playing for groups and performances. I can also help with the recording aspect of playing music, both solo and with groups. Here are some of the genres that I love to teach: Alternative and Classic Rock Air tapping, Opening Tunings Classical and Spanish Classical Heavier and Experimental Genres Ambient and Psychedelic with effects pedals Playing with Fretless/ 7 & 8 string guitar I like our lessons to be structured and goal orientated, we often have an online lesson diary together where I keep notes of everything we are doing in the lessons, where you can add your own notes and things you would like to work on. I find this is very useful to keep you progressing with the guitar at a good pace. Please just ask for more information :)

Guitar lessons (Acoustic and Electric) and music composition
The Guitar is undoubtedly one of the most popular instruments of the modern age. It is so versatile and used in many genres ranging from Classical music, to Death Metal and even Electronic Music. I will teach you the basics of playing the guitar, and I'll spice it up later with my experience on composition and song-writing. We will learn by example through the famous songs that shaped our understanding of the guitar. Whether you prefer singer-songwriter style songs, or thrash metal we'll get there together. I will teach mainly using the guitar tablature format, we can do sheet music which is generally unneeded for anything besides classical, but I will need to refresh my music sheet reading skills as I haven't had to read any in the last 10 years.

Bach Chorale + Harmony studies - Music GCSE, A-level.
Bach Chorales, the bane of any music student! I specialise in tutoring music for students taking GCSE and/or A-level, having studied and taken my GCSE and A-Levels through the AQA Exam specification (and taking Harmony Studies at University). My aim is to help students calm and help them to see past the convolution of Bach Chorales and eventually see the value they will have for their musicianship in their future. In this class, you will be able to understand the basics of western harmony and how it evolved into classical pieces through from Mozart & Chopin to Hans Zimmer and Charlie Puth! This class is also designed to help students who may be struggling or want to better understand 4 part harmony and how to write better chorales to secure their Music A-Level requirements! You will learn a variety of composition techniques to reduce the amount of stress it takes to try and solve the rubix cube that is a Bach Chorale, and also learn how to apply what is learned into further composition, should that be the goal! Don't worry if you are just starting out, I can help you take out the daunting part, and show you how useful these skills will be for you as a musician!

Online Music Production Course with Ableton Live - ANY STYLE!
My method is ... LEARN BY MAKING YOUR MUSIC! The student will learn techniques, stylistic elements, tricks ... already by working on his first tracks: to keep motivation and satisfaction high, the result is always visible! The lessons are face-to-face and personalised according to the level of experience and the musical style of the student. The presentation of the information is clear and accompanied by practical examples. I'll show you how to: - use Ableton Live, - program and control synthesizers and virtual instruments, - use microphone and sound card to record your voice and your instruments, - process sound with effects (plugins) and optimize it for diffusion (mixing and mastering), - make your songs, from start to the last details. I also speak Spanish, French, German and Italian.

Piano, Music Theory and Musical Creativity for kids and adults
I am a composer and pianist and I give piano lessons to kids and adults of a wide range of levels. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in learning how to play the piano or you are curious about music theory or how to make your own music. The structure and the material of the lesson are based on your skills, preferences and wishes, but also according to established piano methods and further music bibliography. I am always keen on transcribing some of my pupils' favourite pieces on piano according to their skills, something that often is very useful and fruitful for their progress. In the first lesson we will talk about your interests, motivation and goals and we will create together a personal course structure. Music demands patience and practice, but all these become easier when you keep your motivation alive by enjoying the process! The lesson can take place online and at your place or mine.
