Composition with Tom – Create Your Own Unique Music

    Hello!

I am an Amsterdam based musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts.

Currently a masters composition student under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, I have a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I completed all of the harmony and counterpoint electives, and prior to this was accepted into Chetham’s School of Music as a joint principle study composer and trumpet player. I gained my ABRSM grade 8 piano at this time, after obtaining my grade 8 cornet 3 years prior. I have won multiple awards, including the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition in 2013, and my varied and diverse music has been played by ensembles such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, and European Youth Brass Band; broadcast on radio and television both nationally in the UK and internationally; and performed for royalty and at events such as the BBC Proms and the Total BWF Badminton World Championships.

Furthermore, I am also passionate about conducting others works as well as my own, rehearsing ensembles of all standards, ages, and varieties, organising events, as well as tutoring – a former pupil gaining a place at a prestigious specialist music school in the UK before going on to study at a conservatoire. I have been described as clear and inspiring, being able to give students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moment when I felt unsure with what to do.” I also enjoy my work as a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, which involves assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers.

As a composer I have a diverse range of skills. Whilst most of my work is contemporary classical concert music, I have a good grounding in tonal harmony and am experienced in writing music more typical of past eras and for events such as opening ceremonies and medals ceremonies. I also have knowledge of jazz, having worked in this genre.

Lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways to deal with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and development of ideas.

Please contact me to chat about your (child’s) musical goals and ambitions. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on screen.

Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon!

    About Me

    Biography

Following success in the 2013 BBC Inspire Young Composers’ Competition, Thomas – who is 23 and from Huddersfield – began studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and recently completed a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree under the tutelage of Professor Rory Boyle. Prior to this, he attended Chetham’s School of Music and was awarded the Douglas Steele Award for Composition. He now studies under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

The “joyfully exuberant” (Anna Meredith) ‘Recomposed Baroque’ was performed by members of the Aurora Orchestra at the BBC Proms and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in 2013. Subsequently ‘Cairo’ was commissioned for members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. More recent projects have included a work to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday on behalf of the Holme Valley Parish Council, last year 'Lux' was rehearsed and recorded by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and his music was used as
part of the TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships and Scottish Open Badminton Grand Prix. In February 2016 musicians joined together to perform in a concert containing a selection of his chamber music and he has worked with ensembles such as Red Note and the European Youth Brass Band. At the age of 15 he arranged music for Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts.

Conducting is another passion of Thomas’; he enjoys directing his own works as well as others. He also plays trumpet, cornet, piano, and has appeared as a percussionist.

As a tutor, Thomas has been described as clear and inspiring and is able to give his students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moments when I felt unsure with what to do.” He is a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, regularly assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers.

Thomas is currently generously supported by Moose International.

“We got shivers down the spine from that fanfare” (Stephen Threlfall)

    What inspires me?

As a composer I am inspired by many people from many different eras. I'm currently researching orchestral music by HK Gruber, a living Austrian composer and my current composition work includes experimenting with jazz harmony. Another modern composer who has inspired me is Alfred Schnittke. I enjoy his harsh juxtaposition of styles.

When learning about traditional tonal harmony and counterpoint, the music of J.S. Bach is the place to start and it has had a big influence on my contemporary concert work, although of course there are many composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Reger, to name a few - who followed Bach who developed tonal language further and used it in different ways.

As a player I play a wide range of music from different eras. A big part of my background was playing cornet in brass bands, although I have also played orchestral, big band, and chamber music. My favourite trumpet player is probably Allen Vizzutti, a very versatile classical and jazz American musician, with phenomenal technical abilities.

Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. Once the basics are mastered, students begin to focus more on harmony and counterpoint, examining and learning to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Contrary to popular belief, music theory isn't boring! Please contact me to chat about your (child’s) musical goals and ambitions. PIANO LESSONS: What about learning how to play the piano? (in person and online)
Piano, the instrument used by the romantics to make their most beautiful music, but also by the most experimental and modern composers to create their amazing music. Isn't it a great instrument to play? With more than 5 years of experience teaching in music schools and 8 years as a private piano teacher, I developed an efficient and "fun"-focusing way to teach how to play the instrument. Every student is different, so also the way to play and learn shall be different, which makes every single lesson special and rewarding. I also offer the possibility of teaching in groups: if you want to know more about this option. I hope I become the teacher you want and need!

    Composition Lesson
Composition lessons are for anyone who wishes to compose music, for any instrument, emsemble and/or electronics music. My teaching method combines various approaches and styles, supporting practice with theoretical knowledge, and most important developing creativity and helping the student in making their imagionary visions come real. For each student a different palate of tools is offered, according to the student's musical wishes and ambitions. I teach the basis of western-music composition - theory, harmony, counterpoint, score-reading, solfege, rhythm, analysis and more. Further I suggest broad overview of world, jazz, pop, new/contemporary music, various styles in electronic music (popular and experimental), improvisatory compositions, graphic notation, text and game pieces, music for theater, film and dance and interdicsiplinary works which combine music with other art fields.

    Marco
Music Production and Theory: Everything you need to know.
My name is Marco, and I am an Italian composer and sound designer working and living in Amsterdam. I studied Classical and Experimental Composition at the Conservatory, and then Communication Sciences and Technologies, and Sound Design at the University. After that, I spent the last 8 years producing music and sounds for advertisement, short movies, tv shows, documentaries, theatre, art installations, and so on. This gave me a broad knowledge of how to write music in every different style, and how to do that fast. This class starts with my experience, but I really want the students to build their own personalized plan, choosing on which of these areas to focus on: -Film Scoring -Sound Design -Music Theory -Arranging for Orchestra -Solfège -Introduction to Piano -Introduction to Music Softwares (DAWs) and Plugins -Electronic Music and Beats Production If you need to take lessons at certain times excluded from my timetable feel free to contact me anyways and let's see what we can arrange. Hope to hear from you soon! Cheers :)

Ableton Live - Getting your ideas down into a workable format to create a full working track! No prior knowledge needed!
I specialise in making music with the computer when there isn't a whole bunch of theory knowledge there. I can teach you to quickly and efficiently make that tune in your head into a reality, then turn that into a full track. If you have tried a few tutorials or courses and they didn't fit with you because of all the engineering jargon and theory based approach, this course is for you! I learnt to make music because I was hearing all these songs in my head but wasn't good enough at any instrument to materialise them. Ableton allowed me to hash through ideas, jam with them, then finally turn them into a full working track. I think there are a lot of people like me that just need to express what they have in there head and Ableton is by far the best program for that. It is very intuitive, "jammable" and so much fun! For me Ableton is my instrument.
