Composition with Tom – Create Your Own Unique Music
Van 42.77 € /h
Hello!
I am a musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts.
As a composer I have a diverse range of skills. Whilst most of my work is contemporary classical concert music, I have a good grounding in tonal harmony and am experienced in writing music more typical of past eras and for events such as opening ceremonies and medals ceremonies. I also have knowledge of jazz, having worked in this genre.
Lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways to deal with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and development of ideas.
Please contact me to chat about your/ your child’s musical goals and ambitions and to arrange a lesson. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on screen.
Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon!

Huddersfield born composer Thomas has worked with organizations such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Nieuw Ensemble, Aurora Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, European Youth Brass Band, and Neon - Choir for Newest Music. Furthermore, his music has been performed at the BBC Proms and broadcast on national radio in both the UK and Netherlands. In 2016 musicians joined together to perform in a concert containing a selection of his chamber music and in 2017 his music formed part of the medals ceremonies of the Total BWF Badminton World Championships and Scottish Open Badminton Grand Prix, the former tournament broadcast to over 0.6 billion people worldwide. HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex was in attendance and requested to meet Thomas, as he’d heard another of his works in 2012. At the age of 15 he arranged music for Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts.
Whilst Thomas believes it important to write what one wishes to hear, his music aims to be appealing to general audiences and “accessible”, yet still original and innovative. He regularly experiments with jazz harmony and polystylism and has enjoyed writing works which have a sense of energy and forward momentum throughout, as well as ones of a more relaxed nature. His current interests include using tonal harmony in new ways and bright sounds, in terms of both harmony and timbre. One of his idols is the Austrian composer HK Gruber, whose music he has recently completed a paper on.
Thomas studied with Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (generously supported by Moose International) following completion of undergraduate studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Prior to this, he was a student at Chetham’s School of Music, at which time he won the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition and was awarded the Douglas Steele Award.
Conducting is another passion of Thomas’s; he enjoys directing his own works as well as others with student, professional, youth, and amateur ensembles and orchestras, including championship section brass bands. He grew up playing cornet and trumpet in brass bands, big bands, orchestras, and other ensembles. He also plays piano, has appeared as a percussionist at events such as the British and Scottish Open Brass Band Championships, and tutors a wide range of students. Mentoring is also part of his role as a BBC Proms Inspire Ambassador. He enjoys undertaking arts leadership roles and in 2017 ran a composers’ orchestral workshop at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
“Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moments when I felt unsure with what to do.”
What Inspires Me?
As a composer, I am inspired by many people from many different eras. As part of my master's, I recently completed a paper on the harmony within orchestral music by living Austrian composer HK Gruber and my current composition work includes experimenting with jazz harmony. Another modern composer who has inspired me is Alfred Schnittke. I enjoy his harsh juxtaposition of styles.
When learning about traditional tonal harmony and counterpoint, the music of J.S. Bach is the place to start and it has had a big influence on my contemporary concert work, although of course there are many composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Reger, to name a few - who followed Bach and developed tonal language further, using it in different ways.
As a player, I play a wide range of music from different eras. A large chunk of my background was playing cornet in brass bands, although I have also played orchestral, big band, and chamber music. My favorite trumpet player is probably Allen Vizzutti, a very versatile classical and jazz American musician, with phenomenal technical abilities.

Hello!
I am a musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts.
Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. Once the basics are mastered, students begin to focus more on harmony and counterpoint, examining and learning to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Contrary to popular belief, music theory isn't boring!
