Music Theory Lessons with Tom Music Theory Lessons with Tom

    Hello!

I am an Amsterdam based musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts.

Currently a masters composition student under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, I have a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I completed all of the harmony and counterpoint electives, and prior to this was accepted into Chetham’s School of Music as a joint principle study composer and trumpet player. I gained my ABRSM grade 8 piano at this time, after obtaining my grade 8 cornet 3 years prior. I have won multiple awards, including the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition in 2013, and my varied and diverse music has been played by ensembles such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, and European Youth Brass Band; broadcast on radio and television both nationally in the UK and internationally; and performed for royalty and at events such as the BBC Proms and the Total BWF Badminton World Championships.

Furthermore, I am also passionate about conducting others works as well as my own, rehearsing ensembles of all standards, ages, and varieties, organising events, as well as tutoring – a former pupil gaining a place at a prestigious specialist music school in the UK before going on to study at a conservatoire. I have been described as clear and inspiring, being able to give students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moment when I felt unsure with what to do.” I also enjoy my work as a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, which involves assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers.

Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. Once the basics are mastered, students begin to focus more on harmony and counterpoint, examining and learning to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Contrary to popular belief, music theory isn't boring!

Please contact me to chat about your (child’s) musical goals and ambitions. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on screen.

Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon!

    About Me

    Biography

Following success in the 2013 BBC Inspire Young Composers’ Competition, Thomas – who is 23 and from Huddersfield – began studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and recently completed a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree under the tutelage of Professor Rory Boyle. Prior to this, he attended Chetham’s School of Music and was awarded the Douglas Steele Award for Composition. He now studies under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

The “joyfully exuberant” (Anna Meredith) ‘Recomposed Baroque’ was performed by members of the Aurora Orchestra at the BBC Proms and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in 2013. Subsequently ‘Cairo’ was commissioned for members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. More recent projects have included a work to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday on behalf of the Holme Valley Parish Council, last year 'Lux' was rehearsed and recorded by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and his music was used as
part of the TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships and Scottish Open Badminton Grand Prix. In February 2016 musicians joined together to perform in a concert containing a selection of his chamber music and he has worked with ensembles such as Red Note and the European Youth Brass Band. At the age of 15 he arranged music for Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts.

Conducting is another passion of Thomas’; he enjoys directing his own works as well as others. He also plays trumpet, cornet, piano, and has appeared as a percussionist.

As a tutor, Thomas has been described as clear and inspiring and is able to give his students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moments when I felt unsure with what to do.” He is a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, regularly assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers.

Thomas is currently generously supported by Moose International.

“We got shivers down the spine from that fanfare” (Stephen Threlfall)

    What inspires me?

As a composer I am inspired by many people from many different eras. I'm currently researching orchestral music by HK Gruber, a living Austrian composer and my current composition work includes experimenting with jazz harmony. Another modern composer who has inspired me is Alfred Schnittke. I enjoy his harsh juxtaposition of styles.

When learning about traditional tonal harmony and counterpoint, the music of J.S. Bach is the place to start and it has had a big influence on my contemporary concert work, although of course there are many composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Reger, to name a few - who followed Bach who developed tonal language further and used it in different ways.

As a player I play a wide range of music from different eras. A big part of my background was playing cornet in brass bands, although I have also played orchestral, big band, and chamber music. My favourite trumpet player is probably Allen Vizzutti, a very versatile classical and jazz American musician, with phenomenal technical abilities.

Whilst most of my work is contemporary classical concert music, I have a good grounding in tonal harmony and am experienced in writing music more typical of past eras and for events such as opening ceremonies and medals ceremonies. I also have knowledge of jazz, having worked in this genre. Lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways to deal with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and development of ideas. Violin Lessons for all levels in English, Dutch and Spanish
"I deeply believe in the greater importance of Music and in its ability to influence and shape who we are as human beings." -Daniel Barenboim In my classes, the student will grow his/her love for Music and violin playing by a very conscious work on technique and musicality. As a student, I started through Suzuki Method, which I followed for many years as a child, kept growing illustrated by the Franco-Belgian players, and discovered the importance of physical observation and technical accuracy from the Russian playing. Far to often I have seen young talents spoiled by physical tensions and also technical perfection with lack of musicality. It is my main objective to grow this two aspects in balance and combine a beautiful and encouraging repertoire with the necessary efficient exercises to free the body. I have a Master of Music degree from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. I have students of all ages and they can tell their experience on their own.

You will start to enjoy playing the piano both during the class and outside of the time of the class. You will learn how to be able to perform in a way which inspires your audience. I will teach you the basic music theory without going way deep into the theory because this is a performance class but you will learn what you need to excel your performance. Additionally, I will teach you the principles of aesthetics of playing the piano. The repertoire that I focus on is mostly the Western modern and Classical music, but we can also work on some famous Persian and Turkish pieces if you like. Of course, you are also always welcome to bring your favorite pieces to the class.

    Markus
FLUTE/SAXOPHONE. Jazz and improvisation lessons in the centre of Amsterdam.
This class includes absolutely everything what the student is interested in terms of jazz and improvised music since the openness of Markus and thanks to the previous experience from CVA in terms of teaching and playing jazz in the Amsterdam Scene. Markus follows a more open-environment learning atmosphere whilst keeping the traditional teaching methods in mind. Technique exercises and information about the improvised music are the 2 pillars of the lesson. Also, its good to mention that the lessons are not what you'd expect from a traditional lesson. We rarely use paper in the lesson and the most important aspect is not the eyes but the ears. Since improvisation doesn't use paper, why would we use it in the lesson?
