Harmony and Counterpoint Lessons With Tom Harmony and Counterpoint Lessons With Tom

    Hello!

I am an Amsterdam based musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts.

Currently a masters composition student under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, I have a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I completed all of the harmony and counterpoint electives, and prior to this was accepted into Chetham’s School of Music as a joint principle study composer and trumpet player. I gained my ABRSM grade 8 piano at this time, after obtaining my grade 8 cornet 3 years prior. I have won multiple awards, including the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition in 2013, and my varied and diverse music has been played by ensembles such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, and European Youth Brass Band; broadcast on radio and television both nationally in the UK and internationally; and performed for royalty and at events such as the BBC Proms and the Total BWF Badminton World Championships.

Furthermore, I am also passionate about conducting others works as well as my own, rehearsing ensembles of all standards, ages, and varieties, organizing events, as well as tutoring – a former pupil gaining a place at a prestigious specialist music school in the UK before going on to study at a conservatoire. I have been described as clear and inspiring, being able to give students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in a moment when I felt unsure with what to do.” I also enjoy my work as a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, which involves assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers.

A continuation of music theory, students will and learn to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish.

Please contact me to chat about your (child’s) musical goals and ambitions. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on the screen.

Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon!

    About Me

    Biography

Following success in the 2013 BBC Inspire Young Composers’ Competition, Thomas – who is 23 and from Huddersfield – began studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and recently completed a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree under the tutelage of Professor Rory Boyle. Prior to this, he attended Chetham’s School of Music and was awarded the Douglas Steele Award for Composition. He now studies under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

The “joyfully exuberant” (Anna Meredith) ‘Recomposed Baroque’ was performed by members of the Aurora Orchestra at the BBC Proms and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in 2013. Subsequently ‘Cairo’ was commissioned for members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. More recent projects have included a work to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday on behalf of the Holme Valley Parish Council, last year 'Lux' was rehearsed and recorded by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and his music was used as
part of the TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships and Scottish Open Badminton Grand Prix. In February 2016 musicians joined together to perform in a concert containing a selection of his chamber music and he has worked with ensembles such as Red Note and the European Youth Brass Band. At the age of 15 he arranged music for Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts.

Conducting is another passion of Thomas’; he enjoys directing his own works as well as others. He also plays trumpet, cornet, piano, and has appeared as a percussionist.

As a tutor, Thomas has been described as clear and inspiring and is able to give his students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moments when I felt unsure with what to do.” He is a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, regularly assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers.

Thomas is currently generously supported by Moose International.

“We got shivers down the spine from that fanfare” (Stephen Threlfall)

    What inspires me?

As a composer I am inspired by many people from many different eras. I'm currently researching orchestral music by HK Gruber, a living Austrian composer and my current composition work includes experimenting with jazz harmony. Another modern composer who has inspired me is Alfred Schnittke. I enjoy his harsh juxtaposition of styles.

When learning about traditional tonal harmony and counterpoint, the music of J.S. Bach is the place to start and it has had a big influence on my contemporary concert work, although of course there are many composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Reger, to name a few - who followed Bach who developed tonal language further and used it in different ways.

As a player I play a wide range of music from different eras. A big part of my background was playing cornet in brass bands, although I have also played orchestral, big band, and chamber music. My favourite trumpet player is probably Allen Vizzutti, a very versatile classical and jazz American musician, with phenomenal technical abilities.

As a composer I have a diverse range of skills. Whilst most of my work is contemporary classical concert music, I have a good grounding in tonal harmony and am experienced in writing music more typical of past eras and for events such as opening ceremonies and medals ceremonies. I also have knowledge of jazz, having worked in this genre. Lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways to deal with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and development of ideas. Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. Once the basics are mastered, students begin to focus more on harmony and counterpoint, examining and learning to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, before moving on to fugues and looking at the ways in which other composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Vinicius
Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Guitar Lessons
Hello, my name is Vinicius, I am a Brazilian Biologist and I am completing my Masters in Neuroscience at VU Amsterdam. I have been playing guitar since I was 11 and I have been teaching the instrument for almost 10 years now. I believe that motivating the student and helping him to integrate the instrument into his daily routine is the most important role that a teacher can do. My methodology is the flipped-classroom and I use the Google Classroom platform: every week, I will write a study guide with details of what we discussed during class + references (videos/blogs/books). This can be used by the student to study carefully at their own pace. During our next class, we will discuss the points you had the most difficulty and advance your knowledge further. I can also record videos and write essays from scratch specifically for you, whenever the material is not available online. About me I learned to play the guitar on my own - later in life I had classical training at university (singing, piano and classical guitar). I play Fingerstyle guitar, popularized by artists like Andy McKee, Tommy Emmanuel and Antoine Dufour, which consists of playing melody, harmony and percussion at the same time.

Classical singing and piano lessons for all levels and ages
Dear parents and students, I am a professional singer and pianist from Hong Kong, having more than 10 years of experience in music teaching. Having graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor degree in music and Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel with a Master degree in classical singing (cum laude), I am currently pursuing my postgraduate study in singing at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel, under the tutelage of Valerie Guillorit. I am a holder of Licentiate Trinity College of London (LTCL) vocal and piano performance certificates, both with distinctions. Besides, I am a holder of ABRSM Grade 8 music theory certificate with merit. I have performed as soloist at a lot of occasions in Hong Kong and Europe, and the repertoire includes opera, Lied, oratorio and new music. I have given singing and piano lessons to students ranging from 2 to 40 years of age. Very happily, all of them had obtained distinctions in their ABRSM exams and some of them had won prizes in competitions. However, I do not teach them for distinctions and prizes. No matter what they get on their music journey, I love them with all my heart and I always believe that encouragement is the key. For beginners, I focus a lot on basic techniques. During the lessons, I also like to share my knowledge about history and theory, which are important building blocks to shaping a musician. For advanced learners, I would teach more about musicality and music presentation along with basic techniques. Of course, the actual teaching method depends on the personality and ability of student too. I grow up in a top English school in Hong Kong, so I can communicate in English fluently. I am confident that I will give my students the best learning experience. Please feel free to contact me if you would like a trial lesson:)

Harples and solfège lessons for each level. By an enthusiastic harpist. Student at the conservatory with experience in teaching.
I am currently a student at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. I am in my third bachelor. I have followed harp lessons for 13 years with various renowned teachers such as Eline Groslot and Annie Lavoisier. In this period I also gained a lot of experience as a concert harpist. With, among other things, the second prize in the competition Français de la Harpe (2017). And for 3 years I also give private lessons in harp and solfège. These lessons focus on both (young) children who want to learn harp and adults who want to start with harp. Each student is guided at his own pace and the lessons are adapted to the wishes of each student. Also, solfège lessons are adapted as much as possible to the pace of the student.

In addition to these private lessons, I worked at the Guitar Academy in Amsterdam, at Muziekles Den Bosch and at Art in Music in Utrecht, next to my work as an executive musician. I studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg and Musicology at Utrecht University. Broad interests, reflected in the hoevelheid styles I play and education (from pop and rock to salsa, tango and gypsy to metal and jazz). I also give solfège and music theory. It does not matter how exotic your interest, I can help you get better! In addition, I can choose and arrange songs for you, so that there is no limit to your imagination: learn to play what you want to learn to play. These lessons are not given in a large, impersonal music school: lesson duration and lesson dates are discussed and are flexible. Personal and smooth, easier for everyone. Besides guitar enthusiast teaching is a big passion of mine, and I think that is essential to be able to offer good lessons. Whether I teach you how to play your first songs in a few lessons, or whether we are going to pick up some tough pieces, it is a pleasant and productive learning process. Lessons in Wittevrouwen, Utrecht or at extra cost at home. If you have questions, mail or call!

LOUKELELE MUSIC ACADEMY Guitar / Bass / Ukulele / Theory
REGISTRATION MAY 2019 OPEN !!! The course I propose is BILINGUAL FRENCH / ENGLISH, with a program adaptable to your desires / needs with the COURSE BOOK that I wrote and produced especially for my students. Age is therefore not restrictive when you will be able to work with qualitative (and not quantitative) daily work in order to quickly observe your progress and not sink into the frustration of a quest towards an absolute that seems vain and time-consuming. Here the pleasure of playing music is put forward. This is of course accompanied by the pleasure of learning more in theory and being able to directly apply new knowledge on his instrument and identify its common or rare use in the pieces discussed in class. Music theory is popularized to be accessible to anyone, both for those who are connoisseurs and for those who discover everything from absolute zero. The exercises, songs and theoretical explanations offered throughout the program are therefore in an order of progressive difficulty. The course is given with sheets that I provide for each information, range, songs, chord charts, formulas of compositions, etc ... It can sometimes be accompanied by videos made during the course, tutorial videos posted on youtube, etc ... There is now a LOUKELELE MUSIC ACADEMY COURSE BOOK incorporating the entire program of the year. The kind of music you love most will be the focus of the course, although I am particularly oriented in terms of metal / rock music and classical music in my style of play, I am a versatile ear and who appreciates a lot of very different (even contradictory) things. The writing of music and music theory are also two areas in which I am in my element and which allow me to travel transversally in music genres as different and varied as they are and to understand them, to learn them and therefore to retransmit their codes and secrets. You can play a guitar that I made available for the course, and you can also bring your own if you prefer. For bondage lovers the course can be given for 7-string / 8-string guitars. To finish I would like to add more personal that I am professional, dedicated to my profession of musician and teacher, I am always available to answer via message, mails, short videos or even for the following course, to students who contact me outside of class for a reminder or advice on a concept discussed in theory or a difficulty encountered in a piece :) /! \ CANCELLATIONS-REFUNDS-CONDITIONS /! \ For parents who want to put their children to music to occupy them: I advise you to make sure that the motivation comes from your child in the first place! I happened to be confronted with children who did not really want to take these courses and so I had to stop because lack of motivation of the child and boredom very visible! If for any reason (on my side or yours) the classes are no longer given while you have paid for several lessons in advance, THE DIFFERENCE WILL BE REFUNDED BY APPRENTUS, who stores the money and gives me pay per course (which you confirm). So no worries on that side! If we do not finish all the courses you ordered, the non-courses will be reimbursed BY THE SITE! Thank you for your reading and your interest if you have read so far.
