Trusted teacher: The ability to improvise is not a natural skill that we are born with. It is an understandable chain of tools that can be learned and practiced into performance. Improvisation is something that requires discipline as much as freedom, and in fact, it stems from the understanding of sounds, the music's natural grammar. Violin is mostly seen as a melodic instrument but it can be otherwise. Outside of the classical world, rhythm reigns and the violin can be a leading rhythmical instrument too, providing solid grooves and accompaniments or challenging your fellow musicians with percussive sounds. Furthermore, to be proficient in specific styles, it is not enough to just play scales and patterns but it is necessary to learn the colors of the proper harmonical framework which is part of an idiom. In 10 years of teaching, I developed an approach that rethinks the function of fingerboard visualization allowing you to transpose in any key with great facility and to understand the logic behind the shapes of any chord on the fingerboard. In these lessons, I will help you to rethink the violin out of the box, as a powerful rhythmical and harmonical instrument while deepening your melodic ability (soloing) related to the styles you want to play: Jazz, Blues, Fusion, Pop, Rock, Brazilian, World Music. [According to the style we will also be working with loops and effects] This class is designed for musicians who already know the basics of violin techniques but addresses both beginner and advanced players in relation to the field of improvised music. Most recently I graduated from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (2021) with a Master's Degree in Music Education (specialising in violin). I have 7 years of violin teaching experience and 3 years of piano teaching experience. Most of my students have been young children but I have also had students of all ages, from children as young as three years old to adults who are in retirement. Attending Kodaly training at the conservatory has equipped me to teach from an auditory and songs based perspective, where singing is integrated into the instrumental lessons. I also use movement inside of lessons, as I have had some training inside of the Dalcroze eurhythmics approach. This approach sees movement as the embodiment of the music. I also actively incorporate elements of creativity in my teaching, for example creating improvisations, or making musical stories. In terms of my own experience in music, I have performed as a solo violinist with the orchestra as well as being an ad hoc tutti violinist for the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, and with the baroque violin for the Camerata Tinta Barocca and Cape Consort. I have performed with traditional African musicians and ensembles, as well as with dancers for instance in MusicDance021 which is an interdisciplinary real-time composition project.

My private violin lesson with Ester was absolutely perfect. I had a privilege to hear Ester play her violin and she is so good- it is crazy to think I was able to learn from her. She is also such a good teacher. Full of knowlege and patience- which is, in my opinion, a rare combination. I had no prior musical education and this was my first real music lesson. Ester managed to teach me basic note reading, correct violin holding and even playing my first tunes. Her explainations are very clear and easy to understand. And her approach is very friendly. She is also a very nice person and easy to talk to. I wish we lived in the same city so I could keep studying playing violin with Ester- that's how good she is. Lidia
