Leon Haxby - Amsterdam35€
Trusted teacher: I am a friendly, patient and professional Piano, Composition and DJ teacher from London, currently living near Amsterdam. I began composition lessons with Darren Bloom at Forest School and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where I graduated with a BMus in Composition in 2015. I am now studying for a Masters degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Richard Ayres and Wim Henderickx. My previous teachers include Richard Causton, Edwin Roxburgh, Ed Bennett, Joe Cutler and Howard Skempton. I have also taken part in masterclasses with Mario Garuti and Colin Matthews. I was the winner of the Orchestre Nouvelle Generation Composers Competition 2016/17, and the Birmingham Conservatoire Orchestral Composition Prize 2015. My scores are held in the Royal Academy of Music and American Viola Society libraries, and my pieces have been performed in various locations throughout Europe, the USA, Canada and South Africa. In addition to classical composition, I have also completed a number of scores for short films, and composed the soundtrack for Marianna Jungman's show at London Fashion Week in 2014. Other collaborators include Jeff Leyshon, Andrew Delaney, Zena Holloway and New York-based photographer Graeme Montgomery. I have been commissioned to write soundtracks for Japanese Vogue, and Cent Magazine. For DJing I specialise in Techno, Dubstep and Drum & Bass music. I was taught by Noah Priddle and Kasey Riot at the London Sound Academy where I completed a course in 2017. Teaching Experience: From 2009-2011 I taught Drumkit to students aged between 10-15 at a local Rock & Pop School. I've also been involved in a number of music courses for children between 2009-2014 as a Supervisor / Sound Technician. In 2016 I began giving private lessons, and built up a group of over 20 pupils ranging from 5 year olds to adults. Between April-July 2017, I also gave private and small-group music lessons at a local primary school. Approach to Teaching: My philosophy in Music Tuition is to improve the student's technique through exercises and pieces which they enjoy. I also provide a general music education as I believe in a holistic approach, and increasing their passion for music which will increase their motivation for practice and improvement.

Trusted teacher: I am a graduate of Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with 10 years of experience as a music tutor and as a performing musician. I am an enthusiastic classical guitar, lute, composition and music theory tutor offering encouraging tuition to all ages and abilities. In my guitar lessons we would begin with working on posture and technique; with careful regard for handling the instrument correctly, and how to make a well-rounded sound. The majority of the lesson would focus on the piece(s) of music that you are learning, with a view to improving your sound, technique and musical expression over a long term period. I will also offer practice plans to guide your practice between lessons. Should you wish to pursue an academic musical path, this tuition includes guidance with preparation for your classical guitar or music theory examinations, where we would also work on developing your musicianship through aural training. You may also request lessons in composition, harmony, figured bass and composing a melody. For students who do not wish to pursue an academic path through playing guitar, lute, composing music, or understanding music theory, my lessons can be suited to your individual ambitions while still aiming for the highest possible standard of musicianship and enjoyment. Should you wish to study acoustic or electric guitar I can provide tuition in these areas of guitar music. If you are a singer or instrumentalist who is interested in guitar or lute accompaniment for your performance exam, workshop or masterclass, I can offer basso continuo accompaniment on theorbo and lute for music from the baroque era. I can also provide accompaniment on the classical guitar for music after the baroque era. I am happy to teach one individual or a group of students at one time, and I teach from home in a living space ideal for lessons and workshops. My VOG certificate is available upon request. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Trusted teacher: Hello! I am an Amsterdam based musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts. Currently a masters composition student under Richard Ayres and Willem Jeths at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, I have a Bachelor of Music (Hons) Composition degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where I completed all of the harmony and counterpoint electives, and prior to this was accepted into Chetham’s School of Music as a joint principle study composer and trumpet player. I gained my ABRSM grade 8 piano at this time, after obtaining my grade 8 cornet 3 years prior. I have won multiple awards, including the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition in 2013, and my varied and diverse music has been played by ensembles such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble, and European Youth Brass Band; broadcast on radio and television both nationally in the UK and internationally; and performed for royalty and at events such as the BBC Proms and the Total BWF Badminton World Championships. Furthermore, I am also passionate about conducting others works as well as my own, rehearsing ensembles of all standards, ages, and varieties, organising events, as well as tutoring – a former pupil gaining a place at a prestigious specialist music school in the UK before going on to study at a conservatoire. I have been described as clear and inspiring, being able to give students confidence in their work. “Tom kept me stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moment when I felt unsure with what to do.” I also enjoy my work as a BBC Proms Inspire ambassador, which involves assisting at workshops, advising and mentoring young composers. As a composer I have a diverse range of skills. Whilst most of my work is contemporary classical concert music, I have a good grounding in tonal harmony and am experienced in writing music more typical of past eras and for events such as opening ceremonies and medals ceremonies. I also have knowledge of jazz, having worked in this genre. Lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways to deal with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and development of ideas. Please contact me to chat about your (child’s) musical goals and ambitions. I am able to travel to homes and offices and have a flexible schedule to meet your needs! I have also taught over Skype in the past, where there’s the option of screen sharing, making it possible to demonstrate things on screen. Thank you for reading and I hope to hear from you soon! Thomas

Here are some other suggestions that might help you to find the right activity:
Piano, harmony, music theory, aural training, arrangements and composition dedicated teacher. Vast experience with different ages and levels, preparation for international exams, auditions and competitions. "I am a superior piano professor and I have started teaching in Buenos Aires, Argentina, my home country, 8 years ago. Recently I was living in London, UK, where I worked as a full-time piano teacher in WKMT Piano Institute where I have trained and developed my pedagogic skills working with students from all around the world. This experience allowed me to mentor from professionals to early ages with very diverse backgrounds. These are the kind of experiences worth working for, and that confirm my engagement to my pedagogic aims. Building structures that fight to give a voice to the speechless is one of the values I learnt to care the most as a working woman, and that is the reason why I feel engaged with teaching music. Music is a tool to learn a whole different language and improve intelligence and creativity, no matter which is your background. Music is a way of finding how to express yourself in a specific language, and it is at the same time a fun and fascinating process. As a music teacher, I face a challenge every time I train a student, because learning music and learning piano implies a very personal developement. I am intending to continue this project in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where I live and study now (CODARTS - Master of Music - Tango) and where I intend to share my knowledge and experience with new students."

Violin and Viola lessons in Amsterdam with Maya (Amsterdam)
Maya
Our first lesson was an exploration of the feeling of holding the viola and the bow and of playing some notes pizzicato and with the bow. Maya was enthusiastic, patient and flexible in adapting to what I could and wanted to try. Her calm approach (letting learning sink in, allowing a process of getting used to the playing and learning) made me feel very comfortable and inspired!
