Welcome to my piano teaching studio! I am a professional pianist offering private piano and theory lessons for students of all levels. As a pianist with over 14 years of teaching experience in Europe and the USA, as well as over 23 years of playing/performing, I enjoy motivating my students with music of their own preferred style and interest, whether that be classical or contemporary. My main goal is to promote a positive experience and love for music-making during the learning process. If the student is interested in a more structured approach, I guide preparation for grades 1-8 of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) piano and music theory exams where my students consistently receive highest marks. I also have successful experience preparing students for conservatory entrance auditions, masterclasses, and competitions in the Europe, the USA, India, and Canada. We have class concerts at Pianos Maene for interested students twice per year. I am happy to provide either a more relaxed or a serious approach to learning piano, we simply need to discuss the personal goals and preferences of each student. My own studies are as follows: I have obtained two postgraduate performance degrees at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp: "Concertsoloist" in Piano Performance and "Chamber Music” (under the guidance of esteemed professor Sergei Edelmann). Prior to this, I received my Bachelor and Masters degrees in Piano Performance/Music from the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis (with Prof. Lydia Artymiw) and Texas Christian University, Fort Worth (with Dr. Tamas Ungar). My experience includes collaboration with many different instrumentalists and singers, performing as a soloist and collaborative member in several orchestras, and receiving top prizes in several competitions. While maintaining my performance and recording career in Belgium at present, I am developing my private music studio in central Antwerp and look forward to meeting new students.

In piano lessons, we use the book method of Notus or Hal Leonard. Everything is explained step by step and you gradually learn to read music and know the piano. At the start of our lessons we'll take a look at what is important to you. What goals do you want to set, and what feels achievable and comfortable? We set long-term goals of, for example, a year. Completely tailored to where you are at, right now. During the lessons I am patient, motivating, encouraging, and complimenting. I'll point out what could be better, and also pay attention to how you can play more easily. And much more. Tailored to your needs and wishes.

Ruben is an international concert pianist who has performed in venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Flagey in Brussels, and the Rudolfinum in Prague. He earned his Diplôme Supérieur d'Enseignement, Diplôme Supérieur d'Exécution, and Artist Diploma from the École Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris, where he studied with Jean-Bernard Pommier. In addition to his work as a performing musician, he is a classical programmer at De Doelen Concertgebouw in Rotterdam and teaches pianists preparing for competitions and admissions to top conservatories. We'll bring out the best in you. With concrete exercises, you'll gradually understand how to study effectively at home.

PRIVATE PIANOLES Would you like to learn to play the piano, prefer one-on-one private lessons to attending a music school, or prepare yourself for the new school year at the academy? Do you want to pick up your lessons again after taking a break, improve your technique, or simply see if the piano is right for you? Then you are very welcome in my living room! Knowledge of music theory is allowed, but certainly not required. Genre: Classical, pop, film music, basic jazz, songwriting, accompaniment, chord theory, children's songs... I usually teach a combination of classical piano (reading sheet music) and improvisation, chord theory, composing..., but anything is possible. Occasionally, other instruments are even introduced, such as percussion for learning rhythm. I've got over 7 years experience in piano playing, I combine Jazz, Pop and Rock piano with technical mastery and a modern teaching approach. Course contents: - Practical teaching: we work towards a strong basis and search the best and most fun way for you to learn the piano. - Technique: we focus on good technique and posture, with the right fingering exercises, sight reading exercises and attention for hands-and-foot coordination. - Theory: besides the playing we also learn to understand what is played (music theory, harmony & improvisation), which results in more creativity. - Creativity: letting the student take initiative to reach his/her personal goals is a crucial part of my course. I teach for all levels, from children starting from zero to students who want to prepare certifications at the Conservatories, passing through amateurs or simply curious of any age. I firmly believe in the importance of knowing how to read music and this is exactly what I teach first, obviously adapting the method to the age of my students: knowing how to read music is knowing one more language, which, if learned well, won’t ever be forgotten (like riding a bicycle!) and it is an invaluable wealth. Starting from that point I teach the position of the hand, the arm and the whole body at the piano, the fundamentals of the piano technique (giving great importance to the percussive movement of the finger and the distribution of weight), the understanding of musical language, the expression of the personality through the keyboard, the search for touch and knowledge of piano repertoire.
