Maybe you are a complete beginner, or maybe you already know a lot and you’d like to expand your skills with some guidance and accountability. I am happy to share what I know with anyone. All ages & skill levels are welcome! Lessons can include: Learning songs & how to practice effectively Understanding harmony and music theory Playing by ear and listening skills Scales, exercises, and proper technique Chord voicings & harmonic wizardry How to improvise and more =) I like to give my students the tools to teach themselves and I believe learning music can be fun and engaging, even when beginning. I'll ask, 'what do you want to be able to do with the piano?' And then I can help you make a plan for how to get there. I have a jazz background and I love to improvise. I have over 10 years of experience playing and performing music, specializing in jazz and improvised music. I studied in New Zealand, earning a Bachelor of Music specializing in jazz piano and composition. I have been teaching piano for over 8 years now, and have been living here in Berlin for 5 years. Location: I offer lessons from a home music studio at my apartment in Plänterwald, Berlin. I can also travel to your location for an extra charge as long as you're not too far away. Language: I generally speak and teach in English, though I can also speak some German to around B1 level. Trusted teacher: I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard. My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instill a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student. Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you. A bit about me: Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. Trusted teacher: Would you classify improvisation as composition or performance? Well actually it is both! When you improvise you are composing music on the spot, performing what you have made up at the same time as you have composed it. For many people improvisation is a scary word and having to improvise in a group or band is an alarming prospect. However, this really does not need to be the case. As long as you have a basic knowledge of how to play your instrument you will be able to improvise. Once you know the principle of how chords are formed you will soon be improvising with ease. The key to success is understanding chords. Once you know how chords are formed and know what notes make up a few chords you will be well on your way towards being able to improvise. We will, therefore, start by ensuring a firm knowledge of certain chords. After this we will progress to improvising a simple melody over the top of these chords. The next stage is to start using notes that are not in the chord. The process is then open ended with emphasis on developing the melody. If you play a keyboard instrument you will be able to improvise your own pieces and be able to entertain your friends at a moments notice. On the other hand if you play in a band or a group you will be well equipped to do a real 'jam' session. Whether you play a single line instrument (flute, saxophone, trumpet, violin etc.) or keyboard instruments, this class is for you.

Not just a singing teacher, but by the way also the best vocal coach you can get hold of at this moment and in this area of the Netherlands (so take your chance...;-)). For about 3 years I had a serious problem with my vocal chords (incomplete closure) and a dislocated larynx. I started to be in contact with Stefano by chance asking him to show me some (singing) exercises additionally to my treatment at the ENT-department of Martini Ziekenhuis Groningen as well as an ongoing therapy at a professional trained speech therapist. To cut a long story short: Within a couple of lessons and dedicated exercises he succeeded in re-positioning my larynx and got rid of my incomplete vocal cords closure, meanwhile the medical specialists had decided that the only cure could possibly be an operation... As a ‘side-effect’ I am now able to sing and control my voice like I have never been able before and could never have imagined that this was possible to achieve by just some simple but individually chosen exercises and practice. I've had lessons before but chose Philip to try his wholistic approach. I really enjoyed learning about the neuroscience behind good tuition, and I've found my practice is going much better now. I would recommend this new approach to learning to anyone who is either a beginner or just maybe stuck in a rut like I was. It's the most beneficial learning I've had in a long time.
