Trusted teacher: Hello, my name is Alex and I am a certified Violin teacher of 7 years. Additionally to my teaching passion, I have performed in Carnegie Hall, Chicago Orchestra Hall, Sydney Opera House, among others, with orchestras including Classical Symphony Orchestra, Paderewski Symphony Orchestra and Protege Philharmonic. I have performed with chamber groups including the Cras Trio and 20+ Modern Ensemble. I currently teach violin face-to-face in Bordeaux, France and Angouleme, France. I also work with students online who would like to recieve extra practice prior to orchestra auditions or competitions. I have an active music company Violin Inc. that creates music opportunities and concerts for amateur musicians. It also provides educational lessons specifically for violin learning, using Suzuki and ABRSM methods with a mixture of American and European techniques. * Learning violin online does cause extra obstacles, but I assure you it is possible with the right tools and patience. My teaching methodology is created with a mixture of several music methods that suit each individual independently. We create the music method so that it suits your needs and helps you grow consistently. I enjoy teaching classical music and classic-pop music. I believe in note reading as an essential part of violin training, so reading music and understanding simple theory is always included during lessons. If it has been your dream to pick up the violin again or start from the beginning, I would be happy to help you on your journey. I am opened to your thoughts and ideas about what you would like to learn and your goals with the violin. Then, we will be able to form the best approach to violin lessons that will help you progress in a quick and enjoyable way! Although the violin is an exceptionally challenging instrument to learn, with the right tools and materials, you will be able to learn this instrument in a fast-paced setting.

I am a professional violin and viola teacher based in Zurich, teaching in person at students' location or online, in English, German or Russian. (Reviews below) As well as instrumental teaching and ensemble coaching of at all levels over the last 12 years, I’ve led numerous professional workshops, including ‘Music First’ and ‘Music Masters’ workshops in London and was an assistant on the Primary Arpeggione viola course and at the Springgrove music competition. As a member of the European String Teachers’ Association, I participated in their conferences across Europe. I have prepared students for music exams at all levels, working with them on music theory, aural and sight reading skills, and regularly accompany students on the piano. As a performing musician, I perform internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, recently including at the Victoria Hall in Geneva, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and Philharmonie in Berlin. I’m a Tillett Trust and Villa Musica artist, winner of the Małopolska competition, Barbirolli Prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and Len Lickorish Memorial Prize at the Royal Overseas League International Strings Competition. I hold a masters degree with first class honours from the class of Tabea Zimmermann at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, and Bachelors with the same distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in London. * Reviews * Stephanie W. Toby is an outstanding instructor and works with children very naturally. My 11 year old son has been taking lessons with Toby for over two months and is eager for each lesson. Toby is extremely talented, but beyond that, he engages my son deeply with the music itself, fundamental techniques, music theory, and even the interpretation of the music. Toby is kind, encouraging, and works with students at a level that is appropriate. He has allowed my son to chose music that if fun and interesting to practice, even though the pieces are challenging. In fact, I often sit in to listen to the lessons, as they are so good. My son has had a couple of lessons with Toby while company has been over, and everyone has commented on how amazing Toby is as an instructor. I can not recommend Toby enough and hope to continue lessons with him for a long time. Pamela B. Toby is really a great teacher who teaches the pieces well and brings out more of the feeling in the playing. We particularly liked that. Good technique is one thing, but feeling the music is such an important element in music and learning a piece of music. He also teaches theory very well! Tatyana M. Toby is a fantastic teacher. He is very reliable as he is consistently organised and punctual. I constantly see progress in my child’s music skills because every lesson Toby delivers is effective and well-structured. I highly recommend him to all who wish to learn or improve on their music skills. Shaun W. Knowledgeable and frank, Toby was able to provide me with crucial information quickly and efficiently. Hanna S. Toby can explain things very well and understandably, is patient and friendly and easily adapts to the student's level. Jacques R. Toby is an excellent tutor with top teaching skills..he teaches music theory in a way my 12 year old son understands the lesson easily; Toby is very attentive

Today, the violin has become one of the most popular and versatile of all musical instruments. Apart from classical, and, in France, gypsy swing, which remain his areas of predilection, he has introduced himself everywhere, into jazz, pop, electro, etc. However, at the beginning of the initiation, the basics remain more or less the same, in all styles. Everyone obviously has their own rhythm and these particular ambitions: I have students who practice for several hours every day, and others who only play once or twice a week, outside of class. I assume that almost anything is possible, provided you have the right learning methods. First, we will define, as precisely as possible, your objective. What style do you want to learn? Which artist inspires you and makes you want to learn the violin? What is your level of musicality, have you ever played the violin or other instruments? And finally, how much time do you want to devote to the violin? After having collected this information, I will offer you a suitable program, made up of technical exercises, training pieces, "objective" pieces, and also, which is often neglected, listening advice (such as when learning a language, you learn a lot by listening...). Also note that it is possible to play works that seem difficult, by tackling simplified versions. At the end of each course I send you a detailed report of what we have worked on, what has been accomplished and what remains to be worked on/corrected (without pressure, without stress, of course.. .;)) Teacher's presentation Coming from a family of violinists, I received my first violin lessons from my father at 4 years old. Now a graduate of the Amsterdam Conservatory and the CMDL Didier Lockwood, I have been giving violin lessons for around twenty years. Passionate about transmitting, I teach a wide variety of styles, classical, jazz, gypsy swing, Latin, gypsy and traditional music, film music... We look forward to accompanying you from the discovery of the instrument to your first concerts... See you soon ! Musically, Simon

Tristan
My son and I were in Bordeaux for just two weeks, staying with a local family. Unfortunately, we weren't aware that practicing the violin would not be welcomed at home or his language school until the last minute. I must take responsibility for assuming that it wouldn't be an issue and for not clearly expressing my son's desire to practice daily. (BTW, he has been playing the violin for 8 years.) Thankfully, Tristan came to our rescue. Despite his busy schedule, he managed to fit in five lessons for my son during the two weeks, although the last one was canceled due to his illness, which cannot be helped. He even lent my son his mute, allowing him to practice at home. Tristan's flexibility and understanding were invaluable in this situation. Moreover, my son rarely trusts someone so easily, but he immediately felt comfortable with Tristan. He spoke highly of the lessons, where Tristan skillfully combined expression, techniques, and theory, making the learning experience enjoyable. As a result of this positive experience, my son is considering continuing his lessons with Tristan online from the US. This way, he can build on the progress he made during our stay in Bordeaux. We are truly grateful to Tristan for making our time in Bordeaux memorable and musically enriching!

Ester
My private violin lesson with Ester was absolutely perfect. I had a privilege to hear Ester play her violin and she is so good- it is crazy to think I was able to learn from her. She is also such a good teacher. Full of knowlege and patience- which is, in my opinion, a rare combination. I had no prior musical education and this was my first real music lesson. Ester managed to teach me basic note reading, correct violin holding and even playing my first tunes. Her explainations are very clear and easy to understand. And her approach is very friendly. She is also a very nice person and easy to talk to. I wish we lived in the same city so I could keep studying playing violin with Ester- that's how good she is. Lidia

Aida
Aida is really nice and patient. She takes time to understand the level of her students and explains clearly how to play this such difficult instrument, and also she makes you feel confident when you hold the bow for the very first time. Looking forward for my next classes with her.
