The main branches of mathematics are algebra, number theory, geometry and arithmetic. The practical aims of teaching mathematics is
1. To enable the students to have clear ideas about number concept.
2. To give the individual an understanding of ideas and operations in number and quantity needed in daily life.
3. To enable the individual to have clear comprehension of the way the number is applied to all measures but most particularly to those frequently used concepts such as length, volume,
area, weight, temperature, speed etc.
4. To enable the individual to become proficient in the four fundamental operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

The contents of mathematics include Numbers and Number Sense, Measurement, Geometry, Patterns & Algebra and Statistics and Probability. Numbers and Number Sense as a strand include concepts of numbers, properties, operations, estimation, and their applications.
