I specialise in teaching Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation, from beginners to university level. I have degrees from the University of York and Middlesex University, and I have been teaching Classics since 1992.

My approach is to focus on reading skills rather than abstract teaching of grammar and syntax. Greek and Latin are human languages, in which humans wrote to communicate what the considered important truths. The languages are best learnt by studying simplified versions of these important truths, and by proceeding by stages to their original utterances.

My approach to teaching the ancient languages is based on reading proficiency. I like to immerse students from the start in simplified texts. This turns learning the grammar from a chore of memorising abstract rules to finding solutions to specific difficulties. There is, of course, an irreducible minimum of things that must be thoroughly learned, and i do encourage learning these things. For many things, however, telling students that they exist and where to find them as required is a good alternative to memorisation. They then go into the mind insensibly through repeated encounter and use. I can take those students who are willing to put in regular effort from zero to basic reading proficiency within a few months.

My name is Serdane and I offer ancient language courses to secondary school students who may have difficulty developing a working method that suits them. Extroverted and bubbly...and above all, a lot of humor!

Everyone learns in their own way. This is why I do not adopt a rigid method, but rather I adapt to the specificities of each student. I assess their level, their strengths, any weaknesses or delays, and I adjust my course accordingly. My priority is to restore the student's confidence: Latin and Greek are accessible to everyone when they are well explained!

I believe in the effectiveness of active teaching methods: I encourage maximum student participation, guiding them to discover what works best for them. This allows him to continue his learning independently.

Finally, I provide specific help for the preparation of questions or exams in more complex subjects.

Latin was and remains one of the most historically important languages in Europe. This class will teach you the fundamentals of an ancient and difficult tongue. Classes are flexible depending on the needs and availability of the students. While it may be a challenge, it's also highly rewarding as you can gain a sense of connection to the world with a language with so much history and influence.

Looking for a highly experienced tutor for Ancient Greek and/or Latin lessons? Then you've come to the right place! I'm a former economics teacher with a first-degree teaching qualification who, since 2021, has dedicated myself entirely to tutoring various subjects. I did this because it allows me to do what I love most: explaining material, building student confidence, and working together to improve grades. This way, I've helped around 200 students achieve passing grades or even pass their exams over the past few years.

So, while I'm a former economics teacher, my language skills make me a great tutor in Greek and Latin if you're still in the lower grades. I'm especially good at translating, if I do say so myself. :) I got a 9 out of 10 in Greek in high school (pre-university education). I took Latin up to and including the fifth year of pre-university education (VWO) and then had to drop it because I had too many subjects. But the languages are very similar, so I can definitely help you with Latin as well.

The structure of the tutoring is always determined in consultation, but generally, I'm a big fan of starting on assignments as soon as possible. Why? Because then I can quickly see what you can already do and what you're still struggling with. I help with that. This way, I avoid unnecessary explanations of things you already know. Moreover, you can then immediately apply the explanations you do need to an assignment. This way, the material sticks much better.

By the way, if you prefer tutoring at home, but I live too far away, consider trying online tutoring. I'm very experienced in that. I always give online tutoring via Google Meet, using a digital whiteboard where I can draw, color, paste, and type. This way, I can explain/demonstrate everything perfectly. I then share everything I've written on the whiteboard with you via WhatsApp so you can review all the explanations and solutions at your leisure after the lesson. Super convenient!

Finally, if I had to describe myself in a few words, they would be: knowledgeable, calm, reliable, approachable, committed and tidy.

I have several years of experience tutoring students of different age groups in Latin and Ancient Greek. I am deeply passionate about these languages and I enjoy helping students improving at them.
I believe that understanding the structure of a sentence is fundamental when approaching these languages, therefore this is an important focus for me. During the class I always dedicate some time to reasoning and translating sentences together with the student.

I have a BS in pharmaceutical biotechnology and I am currently a master student in Medicine. I find biology very fascinating and I have been tutoring it for years now. Depending on the topic and the student's needs, I structure the lessons differently. I usually explain the topic and use tools such as spaced repetition, notes, conceptual maps to make sure that the student has understood.

I understand how many students think and why they get stuck, while teachers often struggle with this.
I can therefore convey complex material in a personal way, using examples, visualizations, comparisons, etc.

I often hear after an explanation:
- Oooooh, now I get it!
- Why doesn't the teacher just say this?
- That actually makes sense, yes...

My way of teaching is purely aimed at helping with things that are difficult or unclear.
We sit down and I ask, "What do you need to know for the test?" Then I'm assigned a few theory blocks, and we quickly figure out where things are going wrong, and I make sure it's clear.

A lesson usually lasts until all the material is understood. If that's too much, we usually stop after 1 or 1.5 hours, or when we run out of energy.
