Composing music can be intimidating, but it’s actually stimulating and hands-on, and it’s not all about sitting at a table in front of a paper imagining music. In these lessons you’ll learn about composition techniques, harmony, melody, rhythm, form, composing through improvisation, and much more. Everything you need to translate your ideas into your own preferred genre of music. Depending on your background and musical preferences, we will adjust the content of the lessons so that it fits you best. The lessons can be done in English, Dutch, Spanish or Catalan.

About Me

I'm a composer, pianist and music teacher from Barcelona based in Rotterdam. I've been teaching music since I was old enough to be able to pass that knowledge to other younger students, either through piano, music theory, or music and technology. In addition, I’ve always enjoyed the feeling when a student finally understands what you’re trying to explain.

In my artistic career I have vast experience with composing for different instruments and electronic music. I currently collaborate in multidisciplinary projects with dance and other art forms. These experiences allow me to have different perspectives and approaches to art which I use to enrich my music and teaching practice.

Ableton Live is a powerful tool for making music and designing your own music sets to play live. In the lessons, you will learn how to work with the software and music production tools, learn the tips and tricks, as well as the musical terms necessary to translate your own ideas into music, and you’ll be able to prepare everything for a live show or a master track. Besides the more technical approach, we will also work on composition techniques and how to unleash your creativity. Composition lessons are for anyone who wishes to compose music, for any instrument, emsemble and/or electronics music.

My teaching method combines various approaches and styles, supporting practice with theoretical knowledge, and most important developing creativity and helping the student in making their imagionary visions come real.

For each student a different palate of tools is offered, according to the student's musical wishes and ambitions.

I teach the basis of western-music composition - theory, harmony, counterpoint, score-reading, solfege, rhythm, analysis and more.
Further I suggest broad overview of world, jazz, pop, new/contemporary music, various styles in electronic music (popular and experimental), improvisatory compositions, graphic notation, text and game pieces, music for theater, film and dance and interdicsiplinary works which combine music with other art fields.

More than 25 years of experience as a professional musician and more than 20 as a teacher and pedagogue have taught me that, alongside a technical and knowledgeable musical upbringing, my teaching can instil in the student a wide sense of musical appreciation. I'm Irene Martínez, a pianist and recent graduate of the Master of Music program at Codarts University of the Arts, and I would love for you to be my next student.
