About Me

I am a professional performing cellist with a high interest and experience also in teaching, research, historical performance, music theory and composition. I have a Bachelor of Music from the Norwegian Academy of Music, a Master and an Artist Diploma from the University of Stavanger, Norway, and a Master of Music from the Royal College of Music, London, where I was an Anglo-Norse Award Holder.

I am in high demand as a chamber musician, and besides performing with my own string quartet and piano trio, I have also performed with small ensembles and chamber orchestras such as the British Sinfonia, Opera Holland Park, Brandenburg Sinfonia and Brandenburg Baroque Soloists, Florilegium, Orchestra Nova, Piccadilly Sinfonietta and Ensemble OrQuesta. I have been soloist with various Norwegian orchestras, but I mostly enjoy giving solo recitals where the music of Bach is usually present. I am a Southbank Sinfonia alumnus, on the extras list for the Norwegian Radio and Stavanger Symphony Orchestras, and I enjoyed the professional experience scheme of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in 2022.

My research on historical performance practice (early 18th to early 20th centuries) is presented in the form of webinars and lecture recitals which I have held for instance at the RCM Music & Ideas series 2020, at the London Festival of Baroque Music 2022 and for the London Mozart Players friends 2023. I made a recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto historically informed with an orchestra of London freelancers in 2020. I recently performed with the Gabrieli Players and conductor Paul McCreesh in Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius on historical instruments. We made a studio recording which will be published early 2024.

Experience / Qualifications

My teaching experience began in 2006 when I was employed in a half-year long maternity cover at Sandefjord School of Music and Performing Arts, Norway. I taught 10 pupils aged 8-18 weekly and arranged a concert for them by the end of the year with solos, duos and cello ensemble music, some of which were self-arranged. The positive feedback from pupils, parents and other music teachers at the school, and the pupils’ sudden advancements, resulted in regular invitations to come back and teach until I moved to Oslo to begin my full-time study in 2011. During my studies in Stavanger, I was employed as a cello teacher at the Kolibri Music Academy where I taught adult beginners. I was also substituting at the Stavanger School of Music and Performing Arts where I taught children from 7-18 in cello and orchestra sectionals. I arranged a piece for cello orchestra for the students and professors at this school which I rehearsed and conducted in a concert in October 2016.

I have had many courses in conducting and ensemble coaching and have led rehearsals of my own compositions and arrangements over many years. I have been principal in various orchestras in Norway and the UK where I have led sectional rehearsals. I have since 2018 been teaching privately in London with approximately 10 students weekly aged 8 to 70, from beginners to more advanced students, both in person and online.

Since 2017 I have been Jakob Kullberg's unofficial teaching assistant at the Royal College of Music, giving me unique experience in teaching students of the RCM up to Artist Diploma level. I have also been assisting Kullberg in the development of a new book of exercises and detailed descriptions on how to accomplish various musical and technical aspects of playing the cello. With this background, I have a high focus in my teaching on mastering a good cello-technique as a tool of reaching a higher level of musicality and performance. Energy saving and efficiency in your playing are key elements. As well as working on isolated technical exercises, I find it important to place the outcome of this into music at an early stage. It is important for the student to understand why this particular technique is important to learn, but also for them to get a direct feeling that it actually improves their playing. By the end, we all take up the cello because we want to play music.

I tailor my teaching to each individual's needs, abilities and goals, so I have various approaches in my teaching depending on what to achieve. I believe everyone needs to know something about music theory and history to be able to play an instrument. This is to understand the sheet music we play from, ways to shape the music, stylistic variety, deciphering the composer’s ideas behind the music, but also to better understand how the instrument works. I have made short theory tests and writing tasks on different levels to use for my students. Working with the material and actually writing musical notes increases the musical understanding in my experience. I explain simply and well, and I build up a technical and musical knowledge in my students gradually, introducing one element at the time.

Since I was 11 and throughout my studies, I have actively learned music theory, analysis, composition and arranging, and these skills have followed me closely as a performing cellist. I gained distinction in the composition and performance module at the Royal Northern College of Music (2014) and in the orchestration module at the Royal College of Music (2018). My compositions and arrangements have been performed in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, UK and Brazil. As a composition and music theory teacher, I typically teach music notation, engraving, how to build up a good melody, harmony and harmonic progressions, how to put harmony to a melody, instrumental knowledge and how to write for various instruments, how to create various effects and characters in your own music and how to arrange already written music for other instruments.

I teach modern classical cello, early 20th century cello, baroque cello, orchestral repertoire and chamber music, piano, conducting, composition, aural skills, music theory and orchestration. Besides technique, music making and performance, I can help you towards any exams and auditions, orchestral auditions, 17th and 18th century performance practice, particularly on the J.S. Bach Cello Suites, 19th and early 20th century performance practice, and on contemporary music. I am perceived as a pedagogical, motivating, creative teacher who gives simple explanations and accurate descriptions which will help you advance at speed.

Piano lessons - music theory and harmony - for any level
I teach for all levels, from children starting from zero to students who want to prepare certifications at the Conservatories, passing through amateurs or simply curious of any age. I firmly believe in the importance of knowing how to read music and this is exactly what I teach first, obviously adapting the method to the age of my students: knowing how to read music is knowing one more language, which, if learned well, won’t ever be forgotten (like riding a bicycle!) and it is an invaluable wealth. Starting from that point I teach the position of the hand, the arm and the whole body at the piano, the fundamentals of the piano technique (giving great importance to the percussive movement of the finger and the distribution of weight), the understanding of musical language, the expression of the personality through the keyboard, the search for touch and knowledge of piano repertoire.

Instrumental Teacher ( Piano, Guitar, Bass & Ukulele)
Welcome to the music class! Here, we are gonna discover the wonders of learning an instrument. From reading note letters, implementing a proper form to sight reading a piece, we are gonna learn in our own pace. If you're just learning music now and it feels like there's a lot to understand, don't worry we're gonna start from the basics. I will help you understand music and its elements. With your dedication and my guidance, I'm positive that we will get a good result!

Voice Lessons for Young/Inexperienced Singers - Classically Focused
These lessons are for young and/or inexperienced singers. My lesson plans are tailored towards students' individual goals. For some, this may be learning and embodying an audition song for their school's upcoming theater performance, and for others voice lessons are a first step towards singing healthily in their church choir. In any case, I focus on correcting and building core skills necessary to singing one's best while encouraging and fostering creativity, accountability, and motivation. If considered for a long-term journey towards singing, I will focus particularly on classical techniques to build steady breath control, good posture, and proper vowel and consonant formation. Along with providing repertoire, if the student is ready and wants, there will be opportunities for vocal performance in the Santa Cruz area. I will encourage audio recordings in all lessons to help with future preparations. I will be assigning some homework after every lesson, likely a combination of vocalization exercises, dedicated sheet music practice, and theory homework (if needed). *My first lesson will involve getting to know the student, their goals, and some vocalization to assess vocal level. For singers with minimal/no prior foundational music theory knowledge, I may recommend time from lessons (15-30 minutes) being allocated solely towards foundational music theory learning.

If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to reach out, I´d be happy to connect and discuss how we can get started.

Hey! My name is Richard and I give private lessons to all levels. For guitar, it is important that you can improve yourself in a pleasant environment in a fun way where your interests are central. The lessons would take place at my home in Mol or via webcam. If necessary, we can always agree on something else. Professional jazz musician teaching jazz, blues, funk, R&B, pop, rock, latin and classical piano.
I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard. My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instill a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student. Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you. A bit about me: Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.

Learn how to play Piano (or Keyboard) at your own pace.
Have you ever wanted to learn to play the piano/keyboard but don't know where to start? Are you regretting giving up learning the piano/keyboard when you were younger? Do you feel that your current progress in playing the piano/keyboard is being held back? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then please contact me. I always try to ensure that each individual student's interests are catered for. If you want to play for pleasure then I will encourage you to learn pieces that you like. Alternatively, if you are more interested in achievement, in terms of taking graded exams, then this is the pathway that we will take. Enjoyment is the key to success as it leads to a desire to practise. So tayloring the class to your needs is absolutely essential and I am very keen to work with you to achieve this goal.
