Trusted teacher: If- BY RUDYARD KIPLING (‘Brother Square-Toes’—Rewards and Fairies) If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son! n/a Source: A Choice of Kipling's Verse (1943)

Hello, my name is Jan. I am a law graduate with a passion for teaching and learning languages. I speak English, Polish, Russian, and Spanish. On Preply, I teach Polish and English from the elementary level up to advanced conversation classes with a particular focus on building specialistic vocabulary, such as legal or business. Currently, I work with students learning Polish and their reviews prove that my approach is effective. I have been working as a tutor full-time for the last year. In the previous years, I have worked as a volunteer tutor in a charity IntoUniversity, where my responsibilities covered helping students prepare for their exams in different subjects, including languages. Now, I am using this experience to teach privately with Preply. My methodology is the same for teaching Polish and English. However, I tailor classes to the individual needs and learning goals of my students. I use interactive materials to boost students' learning. In particular, games and video clips, as the studies show that different brain stimuli enhance language absorption. Depending on the student's language skills, the common themes in my classes are news reading section, vocabulary learning, and applying it to sentences or dialogues, picture description, video-based discussion with follow up questions. I adapt my methodology to children and adults with zero knowledge of the studied language. While the session is still very interactive, the focus is on learning new words and simple sentence structures and applying these to real-life situations. I conclude the session with a quick revision and homework task, should this be the wish of my student. If you are considering classes with me but your focus is grammar and syntax, I am not the right point of contact. The focus of my teaching is to be able to speak and use the language in daily life.

Very clear as to what his teaching methods and goals are, how he'll help you get there - then jumps right in and gets you started with no fuss. I found myself speaking sentences in Wolof by the end of the lesson, and really appreciate the additional written material he supplied as well. As someone who has taught and learned various other languages I can tell that Dembane has a really sound methodology. I'll add to this review in a few months time, but so far I am impressed. Also glad that he is pointing out regional differences between Senegal and Gambia usage to me, as it's relevant to my learning needs. He does personalise the content for the individual student, which is good to see.
