Trusted teacher: Hello and welcome :) If you are reading these lines it is because you are passionate, determined to learn, to improve your work, sharpen your mind and your ears. You are in the right place!!! The current era offers us the possibility of carrying out musical and audiovisual projects at home for a budget that represents only a fraction of what it would have cost us just fifteen years ago. The material offer is immense and the prices very competitive. Thus it is theoretically possible to produce quality productions, provided that one knows how to equip oneself in coherence with one's needs and that one applies the right principles. In theory yes...but the reality is a little less easy than it seems. Indeed, the current tools, if they are available on everyday objects such as a smartphone or an iPad, are nevertheless governed by rules from the world of professional audio. So, whether your project is musical, a YouTube channel or a podcast, if you want to realize the potential of your idea and achieve your goals, it is essential to have a minimum knowledge base. Otherwise, frustration takes over and your idea, however relevant, ends up in the closet...with all the good resolutions from previous years. Classic. Sad but true. So, as you are passionate, you dig into the subject on the internet, you watch YouTube channels... but alone it is difficult to filter the good from the bad, the true from the false, the useful from the superfluous...this is where I come in to guide you in your quest. Thanks to personalized courses, adapted to your project and your objectives, I propose to give you the keys to a professionalization of your practice. This does not necessarily mean that you want to make a career, but certainly that you have the will to do things according to the rules of the art, to produce quality by broadening the field of your knowledge. Bingo! I offer three categories of courses to choose from, the content of which is adapted to your needs and your level. Therefore, any new registration for a series of courses begins with a telephone or webcam interview in order to determine the educational content appropriate to your expectations. The theoretical part of the courses can be done remotely by the Zoom application, the practical part is done at my home, in a professional environment. With all that said, here is an overview of the different programs: I - Sound techniques and the home studio Objective: to acquire the technical bases necessary for the operation of a home studio in autonomy. - Wiring - Material - What type of home studio for what use? - Theory of sound - Microphony and sound recording - Stereophony - Signal path (signal flow: console, OTB, ITB) - Understand workflows: analog, digital, hybrid - The decibel, its different forms and applications - Metrology (VU meter, PPM, True Peak etc...) - Gain staging: know how to structure your gain like a pro - Sound processing (dynamic, temporal, frequency, harmonic distortion) - The DAW (digital audio workstation: Pro Tools, Ableton Live etc) - Acoustic treatment - Introduction to mixing II - MAO lessons on Pro Tools or Ableton Live Objective: handling and mastering Pro Tool or Ableton Live - What is a DAW - MAO from yesterday to today - Noon - Sampling (sample rate and bit depth) - Internal and external routing - Audio interface - Audio recording - Sequencer - Instruments and MIDI programming - Digital audio processing - Automation - Audio editing - audio export - Setups - Keyboard shortcuts - Introduction to mixing III - Coaching sessions for the professionalization of a musical project Objective: professionalization of your artistic project - Critical listening and analysis of your work - Point by point feedback (sound, programming, arrangements, structure, artistic direction) - Know the stages of production and the various stakeholders - Development of a personalized work plan - Feedback on the work done and advice for progress Do not hesitate to contact me so that I can answer your questions in person! If you want to move forward... there's more to it... :)

Trusted teacher: < Learning Piano is not merely about playing the piano > Before starting to learn the piano, it’s essential to recognize that : '' What we are actually learning is "Music", but not only "Piano". '' The goal of learning any instrument is to acquire the language of music, enabling us to express ourselves and enjoy music with others. Playing the piano is for creating beautiful sounds, not really for developing finger speed or strength. That’s the function of gym. < Music is like cooking > When we cook, to make roast beef tender, of course, it’s nice to have a tender heart, but without knowing how to control the temperature, the roast beef won’t become tender merely by our tender heart. By only adding salt, the dish won’t be sweet. Similarly, simply playing or writing a C major triad chord won’t convey a sorrowful feeling. To create the feeling we want, no matter how much sentiment we have in our hearts, to convey it via music, it needs to be translated into the language which the piano can understand, which means, how we press and lift the keys and pedals. Similarly, when we compose, it needs to be transferred into chords, and notes we write. < Difference between an audience and a musician > There is a common belief that a musician can make music with sentiment or feeling. While it’s partially true, the most essential thing is knowing ‘’How’’ to create the sound that conveys the feeling we want, rather than merely knowing ‘’What’' feeling we want to convey. The understanding of the mechanism behind music is essential, as cooking, and that is the difference between an audience and a musician. As an audience, one can simply feel the music. Like a chief who knows how to create a specific flavor to convey, a musician knows how to create the sound which can convey the feeling we want. While knowing which feeling we want is great, it’s merely the first step. Your emotions are not too different from Chopin, Beethoven, Adele or Taylor Swift, otherwise, they can’t resonate with you. But they know how to create the sound that conveys the feeling they want to their audience. < Course Content > I consider my course to be a form of "Music Consultation" because it contains a wide range of subjects that are essential to a professional musician. While we focus on piano playing, there are also music theory, music history, instrument construction, ergonomics for performers, analysis of composer styles, composition, arrangement, recording, MIDI, computer music, the physics of sound, and more. In avoid of confusion, let’s still call my course as "Piano Course”. < Duration > For each course, I will reserve at least 70 minutes in my schedule for you, including 60 minutes of class time and an additional 10 minutes for discussion and any questions you may have. This will ensure that your courses are not rushed by the next student. This ensures that there is enough time for you to solve your piano and music problems. < Recording > I highly encourage my students to record their progress. This can provide an objective standard for comparison and help you analyze your playing precisely. In my nine years of experience teaching music, I've found many students, including those advanced, already play certain sections very well, while other sections may not be not well enough. But they still try to improving those fine sections, while not aware of those weak sections. Without an objective reference, it’s hard to distribute our effort precisely. This can lead to not only unstable performance, but also practicing without a precise goal can easily reduce enthusiasm. Recording your results and comparing them with those recordings you like on YouTube or Spotify can be an effective way to analyze your playing and set precise goals. If you have a digital piano, I can help you produce a video of your performance for each session. This can be a tangible record of your efforts and you can share it with your friends and family via YouTube or other platforms.

Trusted teacher: A composition class that is tailored to your musical needs! This class's main purpose is to help you find your own musical language and voice, either you are a complete beginner in music or a highly skilled musician. The most important question that you will be asked is ''Why?'', in order for you to learn to have control over your musical product, sound and decisions, so that you are always sure that your musical vision is being well translated and transmitted through your work. In this class we are going to work with: 1) Compositional techniques --- Every lesson we are going to discuss about how do you think your piece should be, and about what does your piece need. For that you will need your intuition but also your ''tools'', and those are your compositional techniques. We are going to see them in other pieces and learn how to use them through your own musical vision. 2) Instrumentation --- To write acoutic music you need your ''arsenal'' and those are the instruments that you might use. In this class we will learn the categories, material, sound, structure and combinations of every instrument. We will learn together how each instrument works and how to notate it on paper, so that you are never limited by the nature of the instrument, but instead you are going to be able to bring out 100% of your music. 3) Arranging --- To make sure that you keep your instrumentation skills, we need to put them to use, not only in your music, but also in an arrangement. Together we are going to work on changing the instrumentation in piece and making arrangements of them so that you have a better nderstanding on how the instrumentation of a piece affects directly the compositional proscess and purpose of a piece of music, but also what are the differences between the sound of each instrument while combining them. Also, this will help you make decisions about the result of the arrangement, do you want it to be true to the original, or not? If not, why, and how do you do that? 4) Music History --- Together we will listen to music and learn some basic music history so that you have a better understanding of the different styles, structures and aspects of music, from the Byzantium and Middle ages music, all the way to the music of today. 5) Improvisation --- If you are also an instrumental player, will work also with improvisation. With improvisation you can strengthen your compositional skills, by understanding your intuition, developing your ear, understanding your taste and learning to work with few material, but the most important thing is to learn how to listen and play music with others, because by learning that, you also learn how to communicate and listen all these musical ideas that you have within you before writting (playing) them, controling them and understanding what is needed and what is not in your music. 6) Film scoring --- If you are interested, in this lesson we will also learn how to adapt music to screen. We will learn how to spot the tempo, feeling and texture of a scene but also how to enhance the message of a movie/game/scene/theatre play/documentary with our music. Furthermore will will learn how to use software for midi composition, and VST instruments 7) Electroacoustic composition and sound design --- If you are also interested in electroacoustic music, in this lesson we will learn how to work with sound editting, mixing, design and engineering. We will listen and learn a lot of electroacoustic compositional tecniques to help you explore, understand and work with a complete different musical world. Our goal is to grow your musical perception and horizon. 8) Music notation and software --- For us composers to write our music sometimes we need to use some programs that help us. In the lesson we will learn how to use programs like that, like Musescore, Sibelius, Reaper etc.

We will work together to design the course that is perfect for you. ABOUT ME I am an experienced music educator and have taught hundreds of lessons ranging from beginners to the graduate level. I structure my lessons around students' goals while encouraging them to keep open minds (and ears). I am a graduate of Yale University, the École Normale de Musique de Paris, the Fontainebleau Conservatory, and the Royal Carillon School of Belgium. I currently make music in Paris, where I am a 2023/24 lauréat of the Cité internationale des arts and a Mortimer Hays Traveling Fellow from Brandeis University. My most recent musicological article, "Overtones, Sonic and Politic: Octatonicism, Minor Thirds, and Bells," was published in Volume 71 of the scholarly journal of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America in April 2022. Although I studied classical composition in school, I write music in many genres including classical, rock, jazz, pop, and film scores. I played the guitar and the drums in several rock and folk bands in high school. My favorite band is the Beatles. Outside of music, I enjoy making watercolor paintings of trees.

Piano lessons, Music Theory for children and adults (Santa Cruz de Tenerife)
João
I have been taking private lessons from Joao for more than 6 months and I am completely thrilled with it! Although I am a beginner in piano, I can see that Joao is very knowledgeable in his field. What I like most is that he utilizes technology very effectively to help me understand tricky theoretical concepts. He also prepares tailored exercises for me, which makes me feel very valued. He really puts his time in preparing homeworks and supplementary documents even before and after the class to be sure that I understand what he is teaching. Joao is also quite responsive. He is very flexible in terms of the course content and willing to adapt to my changing needs over time. Still, as a teacher, he keeps in mind what foundations I need to build and he does not lose track of what I want as an ultimate goal, so he comes with a structured curriculum that I realize over time. I can only recommend Joao if you are looking for a dedicated piano teacher who loves what he does.
