He studied violin and viola with Lutsia Ibragimova, David Dolan and Alexander Tumanov at the Yehudi Menuhin School, a specialist music school in the UK, and was concertmaster of the Cambridge University Orchestra. Recent projects include Tippett's 'A Child of Our Time' with Martyn Brabbins and Poulenc's 'Sinfonietta' with Jac van Steen. He now lives and works as a freelance violinist and music teacher in Helsinki. Leon is passionate about teaching violin/viola/music theory and is committed to a lifelong study of music and music pedagogy so he can share his knowledge with others. In his final years at school, he taught violin to beginners at a local primary school and, after graduating, more experienced 8-13-year-olds at a summer music camp. He has had two years' private teaching experience from a base in Cambridge. In addition, Leon has gained invaluable teaching experience from extensive informal tuition of advanced learners (conservatoire degree-level). The format of your lesson with Leon is not set in stone! He believes that a flexible teaching style is essential to cater effectively for different abilities: reaching one's own milestones always takes priority. If you are a beginner looking to play some of your favourite songs, for instance, the most effective strategy may be to learn the 'tricks' of the trade, or essentials only. However, if you are looking to develop a solid basis for more virtuosic playing, Leon's 'Russian-style' violin school background is ideally suited for rigorous instrumental training. For non-beginners, Leon is also able to offer advanced teaching: this includes help with musical interpretation, the pinpointing of technical issues and anything in-between. I'm now back in Belgium for some new musical adventures, as well as to meet new students. I welcome students from the age of four to adults. I have a real passion for transmitting my love of music, and I like to have a creative, playful and holistic approach to teaching. I also play the piano and often use it for aural training or to accompany my students (or do violin duets). I do believe that music is not just for competitions or exams but a skill for life that can bring tremendous joy, discoveries, friends and fun along the way. Learning an instrument is also a great way to foster different qualities such as patience, diligence, presence, resilience, deep listening and the ability to express and share our emotions with others. Having explored many different violin methods and styles, I take a different approach according to each student. I like to teach a solid classical technique with some scales, studies and pieces, but there are many different ways to make music enjoyable or find other paths depending on the student's goal. Although I was trained classically in Belgian Conservatoires and the Guildhall School of Music, I do like to teach a variety of music that is not just classical (Celtic, world, klezmer, jazz, tango, film music, pop...). I often encourage my students to compose or improvise freely. In the last two decades, I have led many youth orchestras and violin workshops and worked for many different primary and secondary schools in England.
