🔷 When to grant the past participle of pronominal verbs?
Rule :
The past participle always agrees with its complement of direct object in kind and number when the COD is placed before the auxiliary "to be".
EXAMPLE 1:
She washed herself.
(washed what? herself → s' = COD: placed before “being” so we agree)
participle pass pronominal verbs
EXAMPLE 2:
She washed her head.
(washed what? → the head (= COD: placed after “being” so we don’t agree)
note: s '= to itself → s' = COI additional indirect object
