Hello! I am a native (British) English speaker and I can help anyone looking to build up their confidence in speaking English in a relaxed, yet focused atmosphere. As I am also fluent in Finnish, I am able to clearly explain common mistakes and new vocabulary.

As well as working towards improving English speaking and listening skills, I can also assist in developing vocabulary and understanding of English grammar. Therefore, the tutoring sessions can be tailored to suit your needs depending on what your goals are.

Background: Born in Finland, raised in the UK from the age of 6.
Education: schooling in the UK, University degree from Finland.
Experience: Lived for 15 years in the UK, Thesis written in English.

I'm a very relaxed, bubbly and open person who is (at least in my own opinion) able to get along with almost anyone. Having studied 3 other languages, grown up bilingual, and experienced living in both Finland and England, I would like to think that I now also have a well-rounded approach to teaching and learning languages.

Things I value in life include new experiences, friends and family and a healthy dose of sarcasm when appropriate.

Education

I completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD) in the UK and graduated from Metropolia UAS as a Bachelor of Culture and Arts with a professional major in graphic design.

Expérience / Qualifications

All of my education up until university has been in English. As part of the IB Diploma during 6th form I studied standard level English literature and at Metropolia UAS I wrote and published my final thesis in English.
Whilst living in the UK, I volunteered as a teacher at the St. Alban's Finnish School, so I also have concrete experience of teaching bilingual children aged 4 to 13.

If you've lost confidence in English or German, want to start from scratch or want to perfect already present knowledge, I can help you achieve your goals, drawing on 20+ years of successful teaching.

I spent my childhood and teens moving back and forth between Germany and America (attending local schools) as a French citizen, so in addition to being a native speaker of both languages, I am also sensitive to individual concerns that can come up e.g. shyness, difficulty expressing oneself, etc. I have taught private students from all walks of life in Germany, France, Hungary, UK, USA, and now Finland, focusing on anything from run-of-the-mill tutoring to specific needs e.g. confidence in public speaking, social settings related to work, preparation for college / grad school.

My method is to motivate students by setting challenges that let them see their own success. Each country also has its own method of teaching and learning, which can greatly assist in acquiring language skills.

You will gain confidence, speak with ease, learn to speak as naturally as a native speaker and know the difference between their / they're / there at the very least.

I teach in English, German, French, Polish or Hungarian

I specialize in teaching English for TOEFL exams, as well as for high school students. If you have anything you are not doing well in, please do let me know before the session. For TOEFL takers, tips for how to score well can be provided during the class, as well as some practice exercises.

I teach Finnish by having a conversation and by reading texts together. You can choose which areas you are interested in, and I'll find texts that might be interesting for you. I can also teach Finnish basics by going through simple words and expressions, and by using a text book. Grammar comes along, and I'll explain why certain word forms are used as they come up in the texts or in spoken language.

I have a Ph.D in Political science from the University of Helsinki and have been teaching Finnish in various language tandems for years.

English is an international language and it is never too late to brush up your conversation skills to chat with friends, for a job interview, to participate in meetings or pass a test to prove your language skills. I have a student-centred approach based on a mutual discussion about what goals you want to achieve and the duration to realize them. I give classes on an online webcam, but I am also flexible to travel to Helsinki and Espoo region if the need so arises. So what are you waiting for?
