Who the lessons are for: Intermediate and advanced musicians who want to move beyond patterns and automatisms and truly understand what they are playing. How I work: • We always start from concrete musical situations (playing, listening, improvising). • Harmony is explored through functions, tensions, modal systems, modal interchange and alterations. • Theory is treated as a practical tool, not as an abstract set of rules. • Ear training is fully integrated into the practice. • Improvisation is approached as harmonic thinking in action, with direct application to composition. Sam is an amazing teacher, patient and open to the student's goals and suggestions. His approach is more technical than theoretical but will nonetheless get anyone willing to learn up to speed on the basics into more advanced notions. He assessed what I was already able to do on the guitar to fill the gaps and help me progress into further fields. So far he's taught me the electric guitar, a bit of bass and piano and I'm very happy about all of it.
