This course is to dive a little deeper into the culture and history - from the Early Modern Period down to the Contemporary Visual Culture. Tailored to your interests, we can combine language learning with relevant cultural topics. Literature in its widest meaning, including poems and music lyrics, or Visual Studies from traditional paintings to calligraphy or manga and animation films, and more. The course will be in English; however, students are advised to have a basic understanding of Japanese.

About Me

Learning a language is a great gateway to delve into the world's cultural richness, be it your own or a culture you encounter. Having spent my childhood moving from city to city and living in several countries, crossing oceans and borders for my study, this has become one of my fundamental questions: How can people from various backgrounds meet each other and live together harmoniously? As a language teacher, I encourage my students to open themselves up to embrace diverse cultural richness through active and student-led learning with the unique teaching methods I established.

My name is Shuchen — I’m a trained visual artist from China and France, now based in Delft.

Each week we explore a new topic or technique — from line drawing, sketch to painting. Get to know materials: pencil, charcoal, acrylic, oil painting, Chinese ink. Dive in to various styles: Impressionism, Fauvism and Surrealism — just like in real art school.

I’m an art teacher with my own atelier, and I also teach at a local art centre. I run creative workshops for both kids and adults from all kinds of backgrounds. I love designing classes that mix hands-on technique with Art history.

My approach tend to be student-focused which also shaped by my international background. For me, it is important creating a welcoming space where people feel free and inspired to explore.
