Trusted teacher: Portuguese is part of the family of Latin languages, including Ibero-Romance languages, such as Spanish (or "Castilian"), Catalan and Galician. His accent is closer to Catalan and Galician (which shares the same roots) and the pronunciation of certain words has some peculiarities: the letter ç (with the cedilla) is used before the "a", the "o" and the "u" (as in French); the circumflex accent is used on the vowels for the pronunciation of the closed vowels ("â" as Câmara, "ê" as pêssego - and as "summer" - and "ô" as avô - and as "eau"); the acute accent (') is used for the pronunciation of open vowels (the grave accent is rarely used), such as' á' (água), 'é' (p- or 'head') and 'ó' ( as mó); the tilde (~) is used on the letters ã (as mãe or pão) and õ (as põe) to indicate a nasal pronunciation of these vowels; Portuguese uses many oral diphthongs, such as "ai" (pai), "ei" (as lei), "oi" (as boi), "ui" (as Rui), and "iu" (as viu); the letter "s" is pronounced like "ch" at the end of the words (as francés or pessoas) or before a consonant (as estar or esperança). When the letter "s" is at the beginning of the words (like sapo) or in case of double consonant (like passado), it is pronounced like the French word "sac". If the letter "s" is between two vowels (like casa) it is pronounced like the letter "z" (like "zero"). Portuguese has two official standards: the Portuguese standard and the Brazilian standard (no, the "Brazilian" does not exist!). Each official standard has differences in emphasis (more open in Brazil than in Portugal), vocabulary and some syntactic structures. In addition to these two official standards, Portuguese also has a great variety of accents and a great wealth of vocabulary, especially in Portuguese-speaking African countries, as well as in Asia or Oceania.

Trusted teacher: De echte Portugese ervaring! Advantages of learning a new language: Learning a new language is fun. But what I’m (and you should be) after is not bilingualism but instead biculturalism. We think by aid of words. Therefore language shapes thought. In part this is because working in a second language slows down the thinking. No wonder people feel different when speaking a second language. And no wonder they feel looser, more spontaneous, perhaps more assertive or funnier or blunter. Studies show that being able to speak another language is generally linked to a more flexible brain, developing the brain’s ability to plan and prioritize. Also it betters our defenses against dementia in old age. Advantages of learning Portuguese: • 250 million native speakers worldwide • 5th most common language in the world • It has been an official language since 1297 • It’s usage is spread over 4 continents (Europe, South America, Africa, Asia) Now business, For the past 5 years I've had more than 50 students and based on experience I recommend the following lesson duration (minutes): Age gap 0-6 | 7-12 | 13-17 | 18-45 | 45-64 | 65+ Duration 30 | 30-60 | 60 | 90 | 90-60 | 45 Focus on diverse subjects is possible, for example, grammar, diction, reading comprehension, written production, conversational skills. Because the goal of most students is the ability to communicate, I’ve been developing my classes that way. I have acquired extra audio media specially for you :) to hear Portuguese being spoken at a different pace, accent and voice tone. My method is based on a book (that I myself bring to the class and the student doesn’t need to acquire) which I'm fairly familiar by now. But what I really like is to talk to the student. So the book will be used to present the gramatical structure of the language while also serving as an inspiration platform for conversation topics. Periodically we will evaluate how the classes are evolving so as to rapidly and effectively shift focus to where it is needed.

It is never easy to find a good language teacher, who is professional, but also flexible enough to meet the student’s individual needs. Juliana is a fantastic teacher, whose experience, knowledge, understanding and patience creates the perfect atmosphere for improving one’s language skills at all levels. Juliana’s flexibility and adaptation to – the sometimes hectic - availability of students is also very rare and exemplary. Moreover, her extensive world-view/experience helps to maintain conversations with students in any particular subject. Having language courses with Juliana is highly recommended.

Of course I'm more than willing to leave a review here although I think it is much too early after two hours. I'm a very choosy person, Artur convinced me from the first second, he has this irresistible mixture of intelligence, seriousness, humor and passion for his instrument; at the same time he is very down-to-earth. What I like besides other things most about him is his concentration, he is really with his student, thinks of individual solutions - great! After I had the lessons with him I cancelled my subscription of an online learning program - the lessons online felt much better.
