WHY SHOULD YOU STUDY WITH ME TO IMPROVE YOUR ITALIAN?
I have been studying “dead” and “alive” languages since I was 14 years old (from Greek and Latin to Hindi and now Dutch, passing through other stuff). Let’s say that I am pretty aware of what does it mean to learn a new language. It can be hard, but also extremely rewarding. And funny.
I love languages because each of them is like a different window on the world, each of them reflects a specific way to think of the world, to describe it, to look at it. And to think of yourself too.

I would like to share my passion with you and see it as a journey that will enrich both of us: while you’ll learn from me a bit about the Italian way of talking, thinking and living, I will also catch a glimpse of yours.

WHAT’S MY TEACHING EXPERIENCE?
I have experience of one-on-one private lessons of Italian from A1 to B2, and I follow the most recent educational trends (support of audio and video; funny exercises to help memorizing; grammar throughout practical conversational contexts).
At present I still feel more comfortable to use English as a medium - if needed - however I have a basic knowledge of Dutch which is getting better and better.

PRACTICALITIES
No need to buy anything: I will provide you with materials, just bring your preferred tools to take notes.

Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past twelve years. I have taught privately and at language schools like La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago. During the first few lessons I will make sure you have the tools to pronounce and identify all the sounds of the Italian language. This step is essential! And it will make everything easier afterwards. When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling. When you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I will customize my materials to your interests, needs and desired pace. And because you are learning from a native Italian you will also learn about Italian culture and history. You will absorb a way of thinking, not just grammar rules.

I speak a bunch of languages so I know a thing or two about how tedious language classes can be. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad book ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of those dialogues are carved in my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...”

When I teach Italian I try to avoid all the things that I hated as a language student. We will use real songs, real literature, do real conversation and storytelling and we will go on “talking walks” because when you are engaging all your senses it is easier to keep your mind relaxed and to remember new words.

I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre (equivalent to an American MA) and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. I wrote a thesis about translating a long epic poem by W. H. Auden and I tried to ride a horse across America.

This class will have an informal approach to learning the language, adapted to each students' needs and preferences. A diversity of materials will be provided, as well as online resources, all depending on the age of the student. As a German speaker with a C1 level, I am aware of the cultural implications of the language, even though I am not an expert in it, of course. I aim to make every class a fruitful and efficient learning process for the student, but also for me.

Do you want to learn German from a native?

I can teach you German depending on your needs. Wether you want to practice your grammar or speech and conversational skills (or all) is up to you. At first we would determine your level and wishes, from then on I will teach you with my study material and we will practice together. I have build my study material while living abroad in Spain. There I had students from all ages that I thought German to. I always try to incorporate creativity and fun into my lessons. Homework is also a recommended part of the lessons.

My name is Mohamed from Syria, and I hold a degree in Business Administration. My journey with the English language began with a deep passion for learning it. Through dedication and hard work, I mastered the language using Cambridge curricula and other studies, achieving an advanced academic level (C1). This accomplishment inspired me to turn my passion into a mission, becoming an English teacher to support students eager to learn.
