1. Knowing Cantonese will unlock more career options. Did you know that Hong Kong ranks third as a global financial center (after New York and London), and it’s the richest city in the world? Not only is Hong Kong an important financial hub in Asia, but it also has the highest Financial Development Index score and was ranked as the world’s most competitive economy. Most international institutions and businesses have footprints—or even their Asian headquarters—in Hong Kong. Being familiar with the Cantonese language, culture, and business environment can be key in settling important negotiations, making major deals, or even opening up new career opportunities. 2. Learning the language will broaden your horizons. Hong Kong’s “East meets West” culture is unique: Hong Kong became a British colony in 1842 and was handed back over to China in 1997 under the “one country, two systems” arrangement. Under this arrangement, Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China—it enjoys a greater freedom of speech, a separate legal and judicial system, and has its own government, customs, and currency. Even mainland Chinese have to go through Immigration checks upon arriving in Hong Kong. 3. Cantonese will connect you with others. Cantonese is the oldest and most popular Chinese dialect spoken in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, and some neighboring areas around the eastern part of Guangxi. It’s the official language in Hong Kong and Macau, and is historically the most popular form of Chinese spoken outside of mainland China. I’m not kidding about Cantonese being spoken everywhere. It’s the most widely spoken dialect among Chinese communities in Canada, the United States of America, and Australia, as well as Europe and Southeast Asia. 4. Knowing Cantonese will facilitate friendships with the locals. Want to make local friends and know more about the everyday life of Hong Kongers? Even though English is one of the official languages in Hong Kong, Cantonese is the go-to language in the everyday lives of locals. Not to mention the fact that people from the more rural areas may not even speak English at all.A solid understanding of Cantonese can make your experience in the local Hong Kong markets, rural areas, and restaurants so much smoother and a lot more fun! And you’ll be able to make new local friends along the way and hone your friendships (or even a new romance!) with the local language. 5. Cantonese is easy to learn. Cantonese is straightforward! For example, Cantonese grammar rules are simpler than those of many other languages. We don’t have tenses (past, future, past perfect, etc.) like English does, nor do we have grammatical gender like French. Also, we’re quite direct when expressing ourselves. Many Cantonese learners, in an attempt to translate what is polite in their own language, actually make a mess of a sentence in Cantonese by adding a lot of unnecessary words.

Colonial cities in Indonesia were shaped by political, economic, and cultural imperatives of empire. This course combines rigorous historical analysis with in-situ field learning, inviting international learners to experience colonial urban history through direct observation of city form, heritage architecture, and spatial organization. Rather than abstract narratives or rote memorization, our approach treats cities as living texts. Students study how colonial authorities designed urban space for trade, governance, and control, and how these spatial logics endure in the modern city. The class offers a hybrid blend of classroom discussion, archival interpretation, and guided urban walks in historically significant sites such as old town districts, port precincts, colonial administrative centers, and transportation infrastructure. Participants will explore heritage buildings, street patterns, canals, and rail alignments—observing how power was inscribed into the urban fabric. Learning resources include historical maps, planning documents, photographs, and Dutch-language sources, combined with structured field observations to enhance analytical skills. Field sessions are designed not only to illustrate concepts discussed in class but to immerse students in the material realities of colonial urbanism. By engaging with both documentary archives and urban environments, students will gain a deeper appreciation of how colonial spatial strategies were implemented and how their legacies shape contemporary Indonesian cities. This course is ideal for students, researchers, heritage professionals, and culturally curious travelers interested in urban history, architecture, and colonial studies.

Trusted teacher: What are your goals? Let's work together hand in hand to achieve them! In my lessons... 📕🇯🇵 “Is textbook Japanese different from real Japanese?” Sometimes it is! The textbook phrase “つまらないものですが” (“It's nothing special, but...”) is now outdated. Instead, ‘気に入ってくれるとうれしいです’ (“I'd be happy if you like it”) sounds more natural and leaves a better impression ☺️ You'll enjoy learning this kind of “real Japanese.” 🇯🇵🗾 How do you say “How are you?” in Japanese? What should you say for casual greetings? I'll gently explain cultural backgrounds and how to read emotions, making Japanese communication more enjoyable and understandable. 3 Create natural sentences with fun topics! “Conjunctions are tough...” “Is this phrasing correct?” When you feel that way, let's create sentences using fun themes! “My Favorite Things” or “My Dreams” With unique practice like this, you'll naturally pick up Japanese expressions. 4 Your Personal Feedback Notebook During lessons, I'll correct the words you speak into natural, correct Japanese and write them in your notebook. Hiragana included if needed. Reading them aloud after lessons ensures you truly master usable Japanese. I specialize in lessons that are “gentle, polite, fun, and bright.” Students often tell me, “I feel more confident!” and “I enjoy speaking now!” Let's level up your Japanese together using a learning style that suits you!

My daughter had her first lesson and she is very happy with Nouhaila. Excellent teacher. From the first moment a pleasant contact and clear answers to all my questions. Nouhaila thinks along well about the objectives to be achieved taking into account the age of my daughter. (16). A warm person. My daughter is enthusiastic and really enjoyed the first lesson. Serious (to use the hour well and completely) with an occasional joke. It is also nice that the lessons can continue during the summer holidays.
