About Me
My name is Svet, and I have just graduated with a First Class degree in Biomedical Sciences with Honours in Physiology (Bachelor of Science) at the University of Edinburgh.

Teaching is my passion

I have always had a passion for teaching. Since high school, I had already been tutoring chemistry weekly. During the summer of my first year at university, I taught English and sciences full time as a volunteer with AIESEC, an international organization that allows students to volunteer abroad. From my second year at university, I taught Bhangra (an Indian dance) to university students three times a week, and we even placed second at a national competition, which was incredibly fun! Furthermore, I became an online tutor with MyTutor during the last academic semester of my fourth year (2018). However, because this was an academically charged semester, I did not have the opportunity to tutor as much as I would have liked to. Now that I am back in Geneva, I continue to pursue my passion for teaching Bhangra and sciences.

I specialize in tutoring chemistry and biology for IGCSE and IB students.

I am a slow learner that takes time to process new information. This makes me very patient. Also, it means that acknowledge the importance of differences in learning style between students and accommodate for this. Because I am a slow learner, I would go the extra mile in highschool and at university by organizing revision sessions and getting extra practice papers from my teachers. This allowed me to get A*s in my IGCSEs and a score of 41 in my IB.

Academic success is about understanding what examiners are looking for
I aim to help students improve by building their confidence and allowing them to become independent learners, which is a skill that will be required throughout their academic careers. Indeed, my aim is to teach students how to revise for exams, but also to convince students that being academically successful is achievable when one understands what examiners are looking for, for instance by:
a. finding patterns in past papers
b. close examination of the course syllabus, which contains many clues and often the written answers to questions that will be asked during examinations

The points above are particularly relevant in the sciences (though it also applies to other subjects). In biology, for instance, memorizing the process of DNA replication from a Biology HL textbook may not actually give the student full marks, as examiners are looking for specific points relating to this process, some of which may be more intuitive than others. The key is to look at the syllabus, past papers and the markschemes, as well as the recommended textbook to provide insightful answers.

Having experienced first-hand the power of dance to shape people’s perspectives, I am enthusiastic about using my professional experiences, skills, and beliefs to educate new young dancers in the techniques, movements, and experiences of dance. I am also just as enthusiastic to share that beauty and power with the community, with recreational adult classes as well.

About how I teach, and why I started; I was looking for dance that was fun, liberating, and yet artistically challenging, all at the same time; I craved something that brought and demanded a more humane experience inside of the studio. My interest at the moment is to use our human experiences and bodies as they are. I’m not so interested in trying to force them into something else, but to allow that freedom to take us to whatever imaginary or fantastical place where dance should be able to take us. I believe my obligation as a dance teacher is to encourage students to have fun when dancing. It’s something that’s forgotten a lot as a budding artist, but one of the most important things for perseverance in this field.

I believe that if the curiosity, imagination, and enjoyment is there, the technique will come as well because there’s a mutual belief, from both the teacher and student, in oneself. Of course to learn a variety of dance styles, be technically proficient, and pursue a personal creative expression is important, but having an experience with a group of people and letting go into imagination while allowing yourself to have fun will push a dancer even further in their artistry, I believe. To be able to be given images, sensations, feelings, etc. and have the awareness to translate them into some form of movement is an important skill as an artist and human being
