The Dutch soprano Barbara passed her degree at the Maastricht School of Music. In 1995 she made her stage debut as Salud in De Falla’s La Vida Breve at Oldenburgisches Staatstheater. She is the winner of international singing competitions such as the Belvedere Competition in Vienna (third place) and the Concours International de Chant de Verviers (first place).

Following her debut she guested at prestigious houses and festivals all over the world, such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Oper Frankfurt, Oper Köln, De Nationale Opera Amsterdam, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Bregenz Festival as well as the opera houses of Ravenna, Torino, Straßburg, Toulouse, Montpellier, Nice, Antwerp, Leeds, Budapest, Zagreb and Tel Aviv.

She feels at home in the great soprano roles of the Italian, French, German and Slavic repertoire and collaborated with conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Pinchas Steinberg, Seiji Ozawa, Jun Märkl, Markus Stenz, Jaap van Zweden and Paolo Carignani.

Past highlights include the title role of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut as well as Salomé in Massenet’s Hérodiade at the Vienna State Opera, Jenufa/Jenufa and Countess Almaviva/Le nozze di Figaro at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, Elisabeth/Tannhäuser in Hamburg and Essen, Elisabetta/Don Carlos at the Semperoper Dresden and the Hamburgische Staatsoper, Alice Ford/Falstaff at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Rusalka in Monte Carlo, Minnie/La fanciulla del West at the Oper Frankfurt and Amelia/Un ballo in maschera at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.

Her most recent engagements include Lisa/Queen of Spades at the Vienna State Opera and Hamburgische Staatsoper, Minnie/La fanciulla del West at the Teatro alla Scala, the title role of Tosca in Liège and Stuttgart, Amelia/Simon Boccanegra at the Opéra Grand d’Avignon, Bianca in Zemlinsky’s Eine florentinische Tragödie at the Opéra Monte Carlo, Elsa/Lohengrin at the Opéra de Marseille, Elisabetta/Don Carlos at the Semperoper Dresden as well as Elena/I vespri siciliani at the Oper Frankfurt. In season 2018/19 Barbara sang the title role of Tosca at the National Theatre of Prague as well as Katja Kabanova and Sieglinde/Die Walküre at the Teatro di San Carlo, both under the baton of Juraj Valčuha.

Barbara appeared in many concerts in all Europe and many other countries around the world.

Experienced teacher of Oud and oriental Arabic singing for over 11 years, I am Lebanese and currently residing in Germany. I studied for 8 years at the Lebanese National Conservatory. I taught at the Casa Beethoven Academy in Lebanon and gave private lessons. In addition, I was conductor of the Loubnan Assalam oriental orchestra for over 5 years.

My recommendation for learning the Oud is to start with the study of notes and musical notation before tackling pieces. Although some students prefer to play songs directly, understanding the basics of musical notation allows for faster progress in the long run. With determination and hard work, significant progress can be made in a year, allowing one to play simple melodies.
