This beginner-friendly class introduces elementary school students to fun and engaging math problem-solving inspired by the Mathematical Association of America’s American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). Students will explore creative puzzles, logic games, and foundational math concepts in an interactive and supportive environment.

The course focuses on building confidence, critical thinking, and flexible problem-solving skills rather than memorization. Through guided practice and collaborative activities, students will learn strategies for approaching unfamiliar problems, recognizing patterns, and thinking step by step.

No prior experience with competition math is required—this class is designed to make math enjoyable, approachable, and rewarding while preparing students for future advanced math challenges.
Extra information
Students should come prepared with a pencil, notebook, and a positive attitude for problem-solving. Each class includes guided practice, group activities, and short challenges designed to build confidence step by step.

Homework may be assigned to reinforce skills learned in class, but it will remain manageable and age-appropriate. Students are encouraged to explain their thinking and try multiple strategies rather than focusing only on getting the right answer.

All students are welcome—no advanced math background is needed, just curiosity and willingness to try new types of problems.

Experience / Qualifications
Experienced educator specializing in elementary and middle school instruction in AMC-style mathematics, creative writing, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. I currently teach weekly AMC math courses focused on developing students’ logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and step-by-step problem-solving skills through structured practice, guided discussion, and short competitive-style challenges. My instruction emphasizes explaining reasoning clearly, exploring multiple solution strategies, and building confidence with non-routine problems.

In writing instruction, I have been TAs for multiple classes, and teach creative fiction, nonfiction, and essay composition, helping students strengthen narrative structure, clarity of expression, and voice development through targeted prompts, revision exercises, and peer feedback activities. I place strong emphasis on helping students move from ideas to well-organized written work with clear purpose and audience awareness.

My teaching practice is informed by my academic training in Piano Performance and Creative Writing at Oberlin College and Conservatory, as well as my experience as a published writer and curriculum designer. I integrate creativity, discipline, and structured feedback across subjects to support both skill development and student confidence.
