Según el diccionario de la Real Academia Española la música es el arte de combinar los sonidos de la voz humana o de los instrumentos, o de unos y otros a la vez, de suerte que produzcan deleite, conmiviendo la sensibilidad, ya sea alegre, ya tristemente. También hace referencia a que la música es melodía, ritmo y armonía, combinados. Según esta misma fuente, un músico es aquella persona que conoce el arte de la música o lo ejerce, especialmente como instrumentista o compositor. Estas definiciones parecen estar muy claras pero, reflexionemos durante un rato sobre la definición de músico: persona que conoce el arte de la música, que conoce!, que tiene conocimiento y, por lo tanto entendemos que sabe de todo aquello que engloba la definición de música. Aquí está la clave, en el conocimiento.

Desde mi punto de vista como profesional puedo afirmar que un músico íntegro es aquel que no solamente interpreta obras con su instrumento, de una forma mas o menos digna, sino quien, además de ello, entiende el lenguaje de la música, la melodía y la armonía, la estructura musical y el lenguaje de el compositor y de la época. Un músico es aquella persona que cuando interpreta o compone música tiene un conocimiento pleno de aquello que está haciendo, el porqué, el cómo, el cuándo e incluso el dónde. Cuando esto es así, el músico transmite fielmente la música al interpretarla, porque lo hace desde el conocimiento. pleno y no desde la imitación de, por ejemplo, aquellos grandes intérpretes a los que ha escuchado previamente.

Welcome to my piano teaching studio! I am a professional pianist offering private piano and theory lessons for students of all levels. As a pianist with over 14 years of teaching experience in Europe and the USA, as well as over 23 years of playing/performing, I enjoy motivating my students with music of their own preferred style and interest, whether that be classical or contemporary. My main goal is to promote a positive experience and love for music-making during the learning process. If the student is interested in a more structured approach, I guide preparation for grades 1-8 of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) piano and music theory exams where my students consistently receive highest marks. I also have successful experience preparing students for conservatory entrance auditions, masterclasses, and competitions in the Europe, the USA, India, and Canada. We have class concerts at Pianos Maene for interested students twice per year. I am happy to provide either a more relaxed or a serious approach to learning piano, we simply need to discuss the personal goals and preferences of each student.

My own studies are as follows: I have obtained two postgraduate performance degrees at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp: "Concertsoloist" in Piano Performance and "Chamber Music” (under the guidance of esteemed professor Sergei Edelmann). Prior to this, I received my Bachelor and Masters degrees in Piano Performance/Music from the University of Minnesota - Minneapolis (with Prof. Lydia Artymiw) and Texas Christian University, Fort Worth (with Dr. Tamas Ungar). My experience includes collaboration with many different instrumentalists and singers, performing as a soloist and collaborative member in several orchestras, and receiving top prizes in several competitions. While maintaining my performance and recording career in Belgium at present, I am developing my private music studio in central Antwerp and look forward to meeting new students.

On Sept 1st 2024 three awarded students of mine were invited to perform at The DiMenna Classical Centre of Music in Manhattan, from another American competition, the International Youth Music Competition.

Creo firmemente en la importancia de saber leer música y esto es exactamente lo que enseño primero, obviamente adaptando el método a la edad de mis alumnos: saber leer música es conocer un lenguaje más, que, si se aprende bien, no se olvida nunca (¡como montar en bicicleta!) y es una riqueza inestimable. Mi trayectoria musical comenzó a los 10 años, cuando empecé a tocar el órgano en la iglesia. Poco después, me matriculé en el Conservatorio local, donde estudié Órgano y Composición Clásica durante ocho años, seguidos de Piano Jazz. Me gradué en 2021 y desde 2016 he actuado en diversos conjuntos de folk, pop y jazz por toda Italia.
Actualmente, continúo mi formación musical en Berklee College of Music en Valencia, ampliando mi experiencia en interpretación, armonía y pedagogía.

I teach online via Zoom, using software which allows you to see the exact keys I'm playing on my keyboard.

My teaching method is to focus on whatever type of music the student loves most, and to build from there. I believe that many people give up their dream of playing an instrument simply because they aren't inspired enough, so my goal is to instill a love for music, whatever that means personally for each individual student.

Everyone learns differently and has their own pace and rhythm. I have some students who like to have a regular weekly or biweekly lesson, and others who just get in touch once in a while when they have digested the previous lesson and feel ready to build on it. Whatever the case, I am very flexible and we can figure out what works best for you.

A bit about me:

Originally honing my skills on the British jazz scene and holding residencies in restaurants and bars around the country, I then went on to tour the world playing on cruise ships, hotels and festivals. I returned to London to complete my master's in jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music, and during this time performed regularly at Ronnie Scotts, The Vortex and many other venues across the UK. I then spent two years in South America learning about salsa and Cuban music. I now mainly work as a transcriber, writing sheet music for all instruments including full Big Band scores. I have also worked extensively in musical theatre, most recently as musical director for 'Jersey Boys', and on the first US national tour of 'Summer: the Donna Summer Musical'. The video shown below is from my stint playing and directing 'After Midnight', a show set to the music of the Duke Ellington Big Band.
