Learning American History Doesn't Have to Be Boring!

I am a teacher with 10 years experience teaching social studies and specializing in American history. My goal is to help students understand the fundamental underpinnings of our country and to learn by discussion, questioning, and conversation, rather than memorizing names and dates.

I will assign a video to watch at the end of every lesson. You should be prepared to discuss it for our next meeting.

About Me

"History is boring." "It's so boring." "Ugh." "Why do I need to learn this?"

These quotes are so unfortunate, because it's just not true. I tell my students, "social studies is everything, because everything is social studies." We engage in discussions about current events, connecting what's happening now with what happened in the past. We question the narratives that had been taught to us in elementary school and are still taught to us through the media. Most importantly, we have fun doing it. We watch videos and share our impressions. We engage with texts and decipher just what the heck these (mostly) old, white men were saying (although Thomas Jefferson was only 32 when he wrote the Declaration of Independence!)

I believe that if something isn't engaging, it's not worth doing. It's why I make my classes interesting, so history isn't just something worth learning, it's something to become a part of.

English All-Levels Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced.
I am a Business graduate student at Johns Hopkins University. I have lived in the United States for over 9 years and English is my dominant language. Understanding English has opened me up to a whole new world of knowledge and experiences. The language has allowed me to learn from the best educators in the world and it has expedited my learning time in any subject of my choice simply because there are just so many great learning resources online in English! Imagine learning from a Stanford world-famous scientist or a Harvard Business professor free of charge! English also allowed me to connect with many high-value individuals and apply to high-paying jobs that would not be possible if I had not learned English. What I wish for my students is for them to use the knowledge they learned from my classes and apply them in real life. English is such a useful language that the potential of its benefits is endless. It is my promise to you that I will show you the power of English so that you can start improving your life today!

Becoming Fluent in English (A2 - C2). Flawless, Conversational, and Natural Language
I am an accomplished tutor with 12 years experience and a PhD in Linguistics. Teaching English is undoubtedly my vocation. My vast experience enables me to develop students' confidence, improve their spoken English and prepare them for the Cambridge English exams. My university majors were English Linguistics, Pedagogy and Psychology of High School. I am currently pursuing a BA in North American Studies at Free University of Berlin. Studies are extremely interesting and challenging, and I'm pleased to share with students materials from English courses and my knowledge of US history. During my English classes I focus on intensive language practice and speaking fluency. Firstly, we will pay attention to grammatical and lexical gaps, learn to analyze speech and use less "simple" words, that is, we will enlarge the vocabulary with proper synonyms (C1-C2 level). Besides, we will gradually introduce idioms into speech and use complex grammatical constructions. After and during each lesson I write down a lesson protocol in Google Docs, including all the material, texts, and proofreading. It goes without saying, I guarantee a responsible approach, frequency and intensity of lessons.

AQA A-Level History Revision and Exam Preparation (Tudors and US Civil War)
This class is specifically for AQA History A-Level students who want some extra help with the course. Specifically, the Tudors (1C) and the US Civil War (2J). This would be a perfect head-start for current Year 11 or Year 12 students who want to advance their knowledge at home whilst in lockdown. I am predicted an A in History and want to pass on my strong subject knowledge, resources and revision tips. My goal is to explain each part of the specification in detail so that students gain a deep understanding of the content and enter the exam feeling fully prepared and confident!

African American History, American History, English
African American History has a very specific place in World history and is, furthermore, tied into colonialism and the expression of African culture on the American scale. As America is, largely due to Americanization, the premier export of Black culture on a global scale, the importance of African American culture and history are currently at an all-time high. The classes provided in this course will revolve around African American history and how it ties into colonialism, the suppression of additional minorities and the expressions of African American culture on a global scale.

Spanish Tutoring and History Tutoring for ages 12-18
I am offering tutoring in History and looking for tutees from Primary school to upper Secondary school students and also looking for tutees for Spanish at any age range. As bilingual British National who grew up in Madrid in an International British School: King's College Madrid, I have been speaking, listening and writing in Spanish from an early age. I have experience in being able to switch between languages effectively and I find it easy to engage in conversation in both Spanish and English. I have also had previous experience in teaching English to Spanish students for which I believe the skills are transferrable to teaching Spanish to English students. During the sessions, I would help with completing grammar exercises as well as work on conversational topics in order to provide a wider range of vocabulary to help with oral as well as written exams. I believe it is important to set exercises and tests during the sessions so I can figure out the main difficulties that the student has in writing in Spanish in order to tackle these problems and help the student. I am outgoing, patient and eager to help students build up their confidence in being able to comfortably speak a foreign language (Spanish) as well as build on their grammar and knowledge of Spanish culture. As well as this, I have recently graduated from The University of Kent where I obtained a 1st Class Honours in my degree. The degree covered a wide range of IGCSE and A level History topics including International History between World Wars as well as American, Russian, African, Indian and Spanish history during the 20th Century. With this, the sessions will consist of providing greater knowledge to the study of History, not only focusing on learning facts, but mainly the significance behind them in leading to other events and the analytical process comparing and contrasting certain viewpoints in order to provide two sides of an argument. My teaching style, therefore, involves following exam structures and working out the key features of writing history essays, as well as setting writing exercises to prepare for exams with the short time available to write said essays. I understand the difficulties that exist for GCSE and A-Level History students and I believe my experience will help to push students to understand the main points to work on when preparing for an essay or exam.

History for upper school students, revision and activities to help boost your grade
English is a vital core subject that every student should be able to understand and form interpretations from a extract. English plays a huge role in history because history students have to create their own interpretations from a source and be able to explain events in history with the correct terminology and accuracy.

Higher and Standard Level History International Baccalaureate
History in the International Baccalaureate can be an incredibly demanding subject. It requires not only extensive knowledge of historical events, but also skilful strategy and excellent essay writing adeptness. I have designed my sessions to incorporate all three of these aspects by basing the teaching around your work and improvement. This allows me to personalise the lesson to work on the areas which are most helpful for you. I will teach you about essay writing specifically for the IB - the structure which gained me a level 7 in IB HL History when I graduated two years ago. I can also teach efficient revision techniques to retain not only the largest amount of education, but also the most important information.
