My name is Marat and I am a London-based pianist, musicologist and composer with more than 20 years of experience. I am also a dedicated and experienced piano, composition, music theory and music technology tutor offering excellent and in-depth tuition for any age or ability. I have been teaching extensively in schools and privately, and giving lectures at universities. I would be happy to share my passion and enthusiasm for music with you! My musical path started at Moscow Jurgenson Music School in Russia at the age of 7 where I took my first piano and music theory lessons. After 8 years of full-time studying I graduated with distinction. In 2015, I graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London specialising in classical and contemporary performance (under Andrew Zolinsky) and music education. Recently, I have completed my masters programme at Goldsmiths, University of London specialising in contemporary musicology (under Keith Potter) and music management. Since 2012, I have been performing and premiering contemporary classical music solo or with ensembles at various venues and events, including IKLECTIK, Arebyte Gallery, Sound Festival, Southbank Centre, Cheltenham Music Festival and Teatro Baltazar Dias (Madeira, Portugal). I am a core member of the New Maker Ensemble, a group dedicated to experimenting with various art forms of new music and performance art. I regularly write articles and album reviews about new music. I have given lectures and presentations on new music at various conferences and events, including the Gnesin Contemporary Music Week 2020, 2021 and 2022, the Gnesin Academy and ZIL Culture Centre. And I even have my own podcast about new music. Tuition is open for both online and in-person classes. All ages and abilities welcome: from age 5 to adult learners, beginner to advanced. I teach from my flat in Surrey Quays, but can also travel to my students, in which case a travel fee will be added to the standard rates. I am a composer and violinist with 13 years of professional experience in the music industry. I am passionate about helping people of various abilities find their own musical voice, and although the violin is the instrument I specialize in, I am equally keen to help people who want to improve their improvisational and music writing skills (such as Logic/ Sibelius and Songwriting). Together we can design a path of learning whereby you define your own personal goals and I help you to fulfill them.

I specialise in tutoring in music theory, music composition, and "classical" vocal lessons. My focus is to personalise each lesson to the students' needs and be supportive in the areas needed for development. I will provide progress reports as well as post-lesson instructions on what to work on for the following lesson.

I teach for all levels, from children starting from zero to students who want to prepare certifications at the Conservatories, passing through amateurs or simply curious of any age. I firmly believe in the importance of knowing how to read music and this is exactly what I teach first, obviously adapting the method to the age of my students: knowing how to read music is knowing one more language, which, if learned well, won’t ever be forgotten (like riding a bicycle!) and it is an invaluable wealth. Starting from that point I teach the position of the hand, the arm and the whole body at the piano, the fundamentals of the piano technique (giving great importance to the percussive movement of the finger and the distribution of weight), the understanding of musical language, the expression of the personality through the keyboard, the search for touch and knowledge of piano repertoire.

As a docent or vocal coach I've collaborate with different academic institutions and private artistic projects, focusing mostly on international students or social integration programs. For many people improvisation is a scary word and having to improvise in a group or band is an alarming prospect. However, this really does not need to be the case. As long as you have a basic knowledge of how to play your instrument you will be able to improvise. Once you know the principle of how chords are formed you will soon be improvising with ease. If you play a keyboard instrument you will be able to improvise your own pieces and be able to entertain your friends at a moments notice. On the other hand if you play in a band or a group you will be well equipped to do a real 'jam' session. Whether you play a single line instrument (flute, saxophone, trumpet, violin etc.) or keyboard instruments, this class is for you.

From my childhood I have been studying music and art: sang in choir and solo, played piano, painted, studied music history and literature, solfeggio. Later in college I have also learned choir conducting, had ensemble and choir singing lessons, cultural studies. During last year in university I had pedagogy practice at university and at private art school (where I worked as a music tutor before the war - piano, voice). I truly enjoyed working with students. They all were different age (8 - 40+ years old) and level. But all were very interesting and work was pleasant. My education was very various: my core subjects were conducting, choir, voice, piano. So it allowed me to work with children, teens and adults with quite wide range of interests and needs: some students needed/wanted to learn particular composition(s), sometimes pop songs arrangements, some were interested in “introduction” to the music, some wanted to renew skills they gained in their childhood and continue their journey to the music world. In addition I prepared presentations (which contained information about cultural and historical background and musical and character/art analysis). So after graduation from choir conducting faculty (which allowed me to deepen my knowledge in many important compatible branches) I concentrated on studying classical singing and piano, expanded my cultural studies and analysis knowledge, practiced solfeggio and harmony.
