Trusted teacher: Please note: This course is ONLY for native English speakers. In this 5-lesson course you will learn concepts and strategies for learning Dutch (and any European language). We will investigate and practice the many ways you can leverage native English speaking for rapidly learning Dutch. This course will leave you inspired and interested in foreign languages. The priority is on increasing your confidence in speaking a second language in daily life and to provide tools for independently learning Dutch. LOOM is inspired by both the classic work on language learning The Loom of Language (1923), and the joy of watching children learn languages first hand. This course is especially useful for: - Those frustrated by conventional approaches to learning language - Those with a bad memory for words - Those who enjoy playing with language and meaning - Those who prefer thinking and understanding over rote learning Please note: You do not need to commit to all 5 lessons in advance. First book a single lesson and see if this approach works for you. About me: I am a scientist by training and studied at Oxford and received my PhD from Cambridge. I currently work as a research scientist at Utrecht University and teach Dutch in my spare time. I have a passion for learning Dutch and finding hidden connections across languages, which I share with others. I am a native English speaker and very competent Dutch speaker (C1 level) - so I have personal experience of learning Dutch as an adult (and the challenges faced).

Lorraine - Utrecht$30
Trusted teacher: So far, I have been carrying out 3 different types of lessons: (a) just conversation: Here, the student prepares 5-6 different topics for the lesson, and prepares a document with the topics and short paragraph about each topic. This way, the student can start looking at the vocabulary for the topic before the lesson. Usually, the student sends this document by email 24 hours before the planned lesson. When we start the lesson, the first few minutes are just a few questions, small talk about the last few days and what is going on at the moment. Then, we move to the topics. Each topic takes approximately 10 minutes (more or less, depending on the content). For each topic, the student first introduces the topic and what they know about it so far, then we discuss the issue, I ask some content questions or questions about your views on this subject, etc. These discussions are very helpful for conversation, sentence fluency, and vocabulary development. When the student makes a mistake in grammar, sentence, or word choice, I correct them and help them understand their mistakes. Usually, each student has a little notebook where they note down their mistakes or new words and phrases that they have learnt. During the following lesson, I may ask a few questions about the topics from the previous lesson, in order to refresh the student's memory regarding their previous mistakes and new vocabulary. (b) conversation and description: This is the same as the conversation type (a) above, but there are only 3 topics and it lasts approximately 35-40 minutes. The second half of the lesson is prepared by me. I send a document with 3-5 pictures. The student describes what they see, using position vocabulary, descriptive words, and tried to interpret what is going on in the picture. This is also very good for language development and verbal fluency. After the student finished describing as well as they can, I will describe in a little bit more depth, to make sure that all new words and phrases are mentioned. During following lesson, the first 10 minutes of the second part of the lesson (for picture description) are for a short reviewing of last lesson's pictures, refreshing memory and making sure all words are understood and well-used. (c) conversation and writing: This is the same as the conversation type (a) above, but the last 15 minutes are focused on writing skills. Usually, we look at different writing styles such as formal versus casual, a typical formal email, a typical friendly email, how to ask for help, etc. Of course, lesson types can changes as often as you want! Some of my students had the first lessons in style (c), and then we switched to one in style (a) and one in style (b). I am also very flexible in terms of what you want to do and what you prefer as a student! I hope this information helps you for you decision and if you have more questions, please do not hesitate!

Trusted teacher: Hello (future) musician! Do you also have a song in your head that you would like to play? Always wanted to play electric or acoustic guitar or bass guitar? Have you never touched a string, or are you advanced and looking for new challenges? I have been giving guitar lessons since 2007 with great pleasure. In addition to these private lessons, I worked at the Guitar Academy in Amsterdam, at Muziekles Den Bosch and at Art in Music in Utrecht, next to my work as an executive musician. I studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg and Musicology at Utrecht University. Broad interests, reflected in the hoevelheid styles I play and education (from pop and rock to salsa, tango and gypsy to metal and jazz). I also give solfège and music theory. It does not matter how exotic your interest, I can help you get better! In addition, I can choose and arrange songs for you, so that there is no limit to your imagination: learn to play what you want to learn to play. These lessons are not given in a large, impersonal music school: lesson duration and lesson dates are discussed and are flexible. Personal and smooth, easier for everyone. Besides guitar enthusiast teaching is a big passion of mine, and I think that is essential to be able to offer good lessons. Whether I teach you how to play your first songs in a few lessons, or whether we are going to pick up some tough pieces, it is a pleasant and productive learning process. Lessons in Wittevrouwen, Utrecht or at extra cost at home. If you have questions, mail or call!

Michiel (1993) comes from Leersum, where he started as a trombonist with the band Eendracht Maakt Macht Leersum. He graduated from the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he studied with Ilja Reijngoud, Bert Boeren, Bart van Lier, Andy Hunter and classical lessons with Alexander Verbeek. Michiel played with various orchestras, including the National Youth Fanfare Orchestra with Danny Oosterman, Dutch Student Jazz Orchestra, Dutch Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Gallowstreet, Valvetronic Brassband, Jong Metropole, Zomerorkest Nederland (as guest soloist) and National Youth Jazz Orchestra. He currently plays with the Hillsback Brass Band (co-founder) from Utrecht and the Utrecht Student Big Band. He also teaches at harmony De Vriendschap in Woerden, music school Kunstenhuis Idea De Bilt, De Biltse Harmonie, the Nijkerks Stedelijk Fanfare Corps, fanfare Erica Austerlitz, harmony Aurora Driebergen and fanfare Excelsior Cothen and Harmonie Manderen in Maarn in the instruments trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet, (bass) trombone, horn, euphonium and bass tuba. Brass blowing music lessons with Michiel During the first music lesson you are introduced to the musical instrument: How do you hold it? How do you make sound? How do you move the slider and press the valves? Once this foundation has been laid, we will work on the basics of brass blowing in a lesson book: Embouchure training, playing natural tones and playing the first songs. The basics of brass blowing: What is embouchure? The same principle applies to all brass instruments: You blow air, you purse your lips, causing them to vibrate and therefore create the so-called "buzz". Buzzing is the sound you make when your lips vibrate. You then do this buzzing on your mouthpiece and before you know it you can already buzz melodies, for example "Jingle Bells". Then you place the mouthpiece on your instrument and the buzz is amplified by the brass instrument. Training the lips and developing a nice buzz is also called training your embouchure. Natural tones on a brass instrument After a lot of practice you will get a nice sound and you can produce different tones with the valves or the slide. You can also produce higher and lower tones without moving the slide or valves. These tones are called natural tones: tones that you blow through the instrument in a fixed order as you go up and down. Practicing blowing these natural notes is called blowing lip bonds. Playing the first songs and improvisation When teaching beginning students, I often start by learning songs by ear. In the future I will work on developing a musical ear and rhythm, learning to read notes, learning to play together, technique and learning to improvise. "The most important thing is that the student enjoys brass blowing. The focus of the lessons will therefore be on learning to master the instrument and learning to play together with other students."

Hernan
Hernan is not just a good teacher but an exceptional one. I have had only one lesson with him so far, but I got so much from it, that I am looking forward to the next one. He went above and beyond from the beginning. He is very modest and professional in his teaching style, which makes it easy to absorb what he teaches. I would say I am an advanced composition and intermediate orchestration student with decades studying and composing by myself. I had been thinking about taking some advanced online courses available on the internet, but almost all such courses are really work-on-your-own courses. They might have Facebook groups available at best, where you can post questions. But they cannot compare to having a real teacher with the hands-on knowledge guiding you one on one. That one session was packed with so many great insights which I could have never gotten out of any video course or book. Only an insider of orchestration craft and the music composition industry could have such insights. I am looking forward to what I can learn in future lessons. UPDATE AFTER 15 LESSONS: I stopped after 15 lessons because honestly it will take me a long time to process and apply everything Hernan has given me. I will be applying it to my large portfolio of compositions, and I know my compositions are going to be much more mature and well-crafted after I apply what I have learnt to them. I have a completely tranformed attitude and understanding of music composition and orchestration craft. I thought it was simply a matter of learning additional material to get me to the advanced level of the masters. But I have learnt it is a whole world of nuances, subtleties and experience that the masters had a grasp of that allowed them to create at that level. Hernan has given me a good initiation into that world. I have also acquired tools and skills that will allow me to continue the journey on my own. Thank you Hernan.

Joana
Joana is a very talented, dedicated and experienced teacher! She is attentive, patient, passionate, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, creative and encouraging! I take lessons via Skype and I am more than happy to have found Joana as my singing teacher! Joana easily adapts to the student's level and tailors each lesson to the student's individual needs. I would describe her teaching approach as original, motivating and effective. Joana knows how to create a warm and supporting learning environment where I feel comfortable to explore and improve my singing voice. It is apparent that Joana loves teaching and sharing her knowledge. I would definetely recommend Joana to anyone who is either interested in taking singing or recorder lessons!
