Trusted teacher: You will get an introduction to the German phoneme inventory, i.e. all the sounds – vowels, semi-vowels, and consonants – commonly used in the standard variety of this language. You will learn how these sounds are transliterated into German spelling (following a kind of logic that is different from English for several reasons), while also gaining an understanding as to why you may find slightly different spellings in print published before the end of the last century. Most importantly you will develop the essential skill to do the reverse and pronounce any German word you might come across.
