Strictly speaking, this is not a class, but a sharing of culture. My intention is to share some typical dishes and food from Northern China, and thereby provide you a bite of Chinese culture. You can invite friends to participate together, and make the "class" a dumplings party, or food party.
When you are uncertain about your essay or thesis (for instance the structure, argument or format), the opinion of a reader who is experienced in academic writing will be of great help. The goals of this class are to train your skills in academic writing in the aspects of text structure, logic, coherence, argument and format, and to improve your essays and theses. You will be provided the fundamental knowledge in the above-mentioned aspects, followed up with exercises and feedback. If you have a ready text, I will work on it together with you, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph. In this process, I will ask you questions concerning your text to help you better form your argument, you will be informed of various argument valencies if there is any, and you will receive advice concerning the structure and format of your text. For essays and theses in the field of linguistics and culture studies, I will also provide feedback and advice on analysis.
Language is the window to a culture, and at the same time an integral part of a culture. The overarching learning goal of my classes is for students to: a) master English (speaking, reading, listening, writing) at different levels through various teaching activities which engage, challenge and motivate them at corresponding levels, b) experience a different culture and acquire a different (new) perspective of looking at the world through the language they are learning. I will provide customized learning materials and handouts, and share various learning resources. For beginners, you will learn basic grammars and simple daily expressions. For advanced learners, you will learn intermediate grammars with the purse of gaining the competence to conduct daily conversations and read simple articles.
