Do you want to start playing the drums? I guide you step by step at your own pace, with no prior experience required. You’re also welcome if you already have some experience and want to strengthen your basics.

With over 20 years of experience behind the drum kit and a solid musical education, I’m happy to help you further develop your drumming skills.

My musical background is mainly in pop and rock, complemented by jazz and Latin influences. Over the years, I’ve developed a strong focus on technique, with great attention to detail, helping each student build a solid foundation. I have been giving private lessons for over a year to both adults and children.

Lessons are fully tailored to your level and goals, with a strong focus on enjoyment and motivation. We can work on:

• technique and control
• specific rhythms and styles
• reading sheet music
• playing your favorite songs

Lessons take place in the center of Leuven (with parking nearby at Sint-Jacobsplein), where you can play on a professional drum kit. Please bring your own drumsticks and earplugs.

About Me

Drummer, composer, and teacher of music, dance and science.

I have been playing the drums for over 20 years and hold a Master's degree in Music Composition from LUCA School of Arts. I am currently completing my Music Teacher Training program. Alongside my musical education, I also earned a Master's degree in Engineering Science from KU Leuven, where I have been working as a teaching assistant for several years.

Whether I'm teaching music, dance, or science, I genuinely enjoy helping people learn and grow. I believe every student is different, so I adapt my lessons to each person's goals, level, and learning style. My aim is to make every lesson engaging, clear, and motivating while sharing my passion and enthusiasm for the subject.

Africa is the center of the rhythms of the 6/8 register. Benin's musical identity comes from the many sources of our cultures and general traditions. This course is initiated in order to allow drummers to discover and access all the rhythmic potential for their performance through the learning and practice of Benin Polyrythmie.

I am Thijs (30) an experienced drummer and musician, with a wide range of musical interests. Studying jazz drums under the wings of Lander Gyselinck at the KASK/Conservatory in Ghent. In addition, I have followed masterclasses and lessons from/with Joey Baron (US), Kendrick Scott (US), Corey Fonville (US) and Stéphane Galland (BE). I am also active in various bands/groups.

My lessons, depending on the level, focus on both the fundamental building blocks of drumming and music as a whole. These building blocks together with the student's interests form the curriculum, so that it meets the student's wishes as best as possible. I also teach music theory/music theory. Some aspects of this are also offered during drum lessons.

The course method, inspired by the Agostini school (French method used in French and Belgian academies and conservatories) is divided between technique and drums. At the rate of one session each we will focus once on technique and movements outside the drums (on pads) and the other time on the drums and the application of technique and movements.

-> The technique lessons and the movements will be those of the so-called 'Moeller technique' that I learned through his direct lineage of student.
-> The drum lessons are greatly inspired by the pedagogy of the M.A.I. (Music Academy International - Nancy (fr)) and in particular that of Richard-Paul Morellini, renowned instructor.

The courses are complete, in-depth but above all specifically thought of to be progressive. They are suitable for children from 7 years old as well as adults of all ages.

=> Particular attention is paid to the movements and their correct application, to the total independence of the limbs and finally to an understanding of the rhythm and its theory. My main goal is to give the student complete control behind the drums and skills to be able to self-learn any piece in any musical style. 1 hour of weekly lessons are never enough, they should only be used to fuel the passion that will make you play at home more and more.

On demand or for advancs students:
- I am very passionate about the study of South American rhythms. Due to their complexity, apart from the samba and Baïon ostinatos, they are not included in the program before the advanced level. They can be at the request of the student.
- I am also specialized in metal (musical style) and double pedal. The latter is not included in the program unless requested by the student. The double pedal courses are based on the methodology of Virgil Donati.

Technique:
* Moeller technique (the 'whipping motion' - the Free stroke -Full/Half/Low stroke - accepting the rebound - its application etc.)
* Snare rudiments and their applications through reading systems
* Readings of scores and exercises for the snare drum
* Speed drills
* Military marches
* Control of the different subdivisions (quarter notes - eighth notes - triplets - sixteenth notes - quintuplets - sextuplets - triple eighth notes - nonolets etc.)
* Displacement of accents and polyrhythms
* On request, double pedal technique (application of the Moeller to the double pedal as well as everything listed above but with the feet)
