Introduction to philosophy: mind and consciousness

What is the nature of consciousness? Is there a self? Is the mind identical to the brain? Can life have meaning in a physical universe?

These are big questions that philosophy can help tackle. Together, we will talk about how to understand these questions more precisely, look at some answers, and learn how to approach both questions and answers using critical thinking tools.

Who is this class for? Students who've never taken philosophy, adults who are interested in exploring big ideas, and scientists and entrepreneurs who'd like to learn how to think about these questions in a more rigorous way.

Extra information

No special preparation is necessary. You can come with a specific question that you need some help thinking about, or with a broad interest in some philosophical topic. We can then set concrete objectives for making progress on your question, or have a more informal discussion about the topic that is of interest to you.

About Me

I'm a university lecturer with a passion for making philosophy accessible to everyone. I have a Ph.D. in Philosophy from UNC-Chapel Hill, and I've taught at universities in the United States, Australia, the UK, and most recently, the Netherlands.

I especially like working with students who've never taken philosophy before, as well as with those who have tried philosophy and found it annoying, frustrating, or impossible to understand. I've been there -- the mandatory philosophy course I had to take in college was a disappointment. I was lucky to experience better teaching after that, and I hope to help others discover philosophy, and to learn to do it on their own terms.

My expertise is in the philosophy of mind, ethics, bioethics, epistemology, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of art.

Anya really knows her way around both in breadth and depth of her field. She asks really cool questions in such a way, that it stimulates thinking together. I can recommend her 100% based on the sessions we had and looking forward to the papers we will discuss :)

May
A graduate of HEC Paris / Sorbonne gives courses in philosophy and general culture (high school/prepa level).
Hello everyone, My name is May, I am Franco-English and I offer online courses in philosophy and general culture. I have been giving private lessons for 8 years. I always try to adapt as well as possible to each of my students, and to pass on to them the enthusiasm I have for philosophy. My classes are always caring, and demanding without being strict - I believe you learn best when you are relaxed and having fun. Especially when studying philosophy, which is above all incredible gymnastics for the mind, and a means of discovering other ways of thinking about the world, the things around us, human relationships. I remain attentive to my students and seek the best ways to move forward with them, to develop their analytical skills, and to consolidate their methodology while exploring fascinating subject matter. I live in London where I am a writer, actress and director. I did a baccalaureate L (with honors TB), studied in the hypokhâgne/khâgne literary preparatory class at the Lycée Henri IV, then at HEC Paris (Msc in Business) and at the Sorbonne (bachelor's degree in philosophy, honors TB). Do not hesitate to contact me for more information and to discuss your expectations. See you soon !

French - English - humanities private lessons
Graduated with a master's degree in human sciences, my love of the French language, whether in terms of reading, comprehension, oral presentation, writing and literary knowledge, is just waiting to be shared. The same goes for English, my CERCL level being C1. Besides that, it is also possible that I can help you in the humanities courses. Each person having their own background, the first course aims to determine what are the short and long-term objectives, what are the student's abilities and difficulties and what are the sources of motivation for learning. When all of this has been discerned together, a course is mapped out to the final destination which is the achievement of the student's goals.

Philosophy of Baccalaureate or for adults who want to start.
Philosophy for school age or adults. I am licensed. I love this subject and my enthusiasm is contagious. We will review the topics for which the student has exams or those that the student feels are of special interest. Textbooks sometimes make this subject more difficult and unenjoyable than it should be.

Philosophical thought on everyday life in Spanish
Present or virtual. In this course, the student will have the possibility of choosing with the master the philosophical concern that he wants to work on (love, existence, understanding of language, phenomenology, justice, general notions of philosophy). The intention is to learn Spanish in addition to deepening these reflections. In this way, the student must learn to use Spanish in everyday situations, everyday conversations, in addition to broadening their perspective of the world through language and philosophy.

Let's make philosophy great again ! I teach philosophy and you deserve to know philosophy and think philosophicaly
Philosophy is not only useful for classes, but also for your intellectual and critical abilities. I focuse on method, making people start a reflexion from zero to complex and deep conceptual problems. This tends to become a real game, that stimulates and satisfies people and me.

Develop your philosophical reflection for a personal purpose or train for philosophy exams
I would like in this course to deepen with you the reading of a text or a theme of your choice, by giving you the keys to understanding a specific author or a corpus of authors. The aim of this course would thus be to help you develop an autonomy in the exploration of philosophical texts, but also to broaden your thinking to new possibilities of analysis and understanding of reality. I can also bring a more academic knowledge relating to the method and the culture required in a cegep course. I graduated from a research master in philosophy at the Sorbonne. My main line of research is oriented towards phenomenology, feminism and gender theory, but I also have solid knowledge in the history of philosophy, in epistemology and history of science, in political philosophy as well as in the philosophy of art and aesthetics. Looking forward to being able to share my passion with you! Theo
