This class is designed as a question and answer tutoring session with one-on-one help from a highly qualified and experienced university level chemistry lecturer who specialises in transition metal chemistry.

Topics that can be discussed include (but are not limited to):
- Electron counting
- Coordination Chemistry and Crystal Field Theory
- Molecular Orbital Theory
- Group Theory (symmetry elements and operations, inc. IR and Raman stretching)
- Introduction to Organometallic Complexes
- Structure and bonding
- Reactivity (Substitution and Insertion reactions)
- Catalysis

This class is not intended to replace your ongoing lectures and coursework in inorganic chemistry, but should be used in addition to help strengthen your understanding of core concepts and prepare for midterm and final examinations.
Extra information
Ahead of class: Indicate the topics in your class that you are struggling with and if possible provide sample problems from your textbook or class notes (I will prepare additional notes and problems based on what you require)

About Me
I am an academic research chemist.
I have significant experience in teaching, although my usual jive is doing wet chemistry in a laboratory (which I've been doing for the past 15 years). When it comes to chemistry, I'm very enthusiastic and I'm happy to share that enthusiasm with anyone and everyone who wants to learn!

While lectures and classroom learning are often hands-off and can be boring, I'm determined to make chemistry engaging and memorable. Together we'll work through problems and topics at your pace in a way that helps you learn rather than memorise outcomes.

I can offer tutoring and remedial lectures in general chemistry, organic, inorganic, organometallic and polymer chemistry at the university level.

I believe that learning is a two-way street and my students get out as much as they put in from a class. I'm the kind of tutor/professor that expects my students to be ready to learn and I have high expectations that students will be prepared with their own questions.
Education
Bachelor of Science, Honours Chemistry (2007) - specialisation in early transition metal complexes
PhD Organometallic Chemistry (2013) - specialisation in f-block actinide chemistry and catalysis
Postdoc in Organometallic Chemistry (2013-Present) - specialisation in catalysis and first row transition metal chemistry
Experience / Qualifications
I've been a guest lecturer at the University of Ottawa and Simon Fraser University in Canada several times in the past 5 years.
I have ample experience as a tutor and lecturer in chemistry from my undergraduate and graduate education.

This class is designed as a question and answer tutoring session with one-on-one help from a highly qualified and experienced university level chemistry lecturer.

Topics that can be discussed include (but are not limited to):
- Stoichiometry (converting between molecular weight, grams and mols and balancing chemical equations)
- Chemical bonding (VESPR theory, electronic structure, atomic and molecular orbitals)
- Solutions and mixtures (calculating concentrations and stock solution conversion)
- Acids and bases (calculating pH, pKa and pKb)
- Thermodynamics (enthalpy, entropy, free energy and diagrams)
- Redox chemistry (balancing equations, determining oxidation state change)

This class is not intended to replace your ongoing lectures and coursework in general chemistry, but should be used in addition to help strengthen your understanding of core concepts and prepare for midterm and final examinations.

NB: I am able to teach to small groups (up to 6) in addition to one-on-one sessions. The cost per session may vary depending on additional students.
