Hello! My name is Julia, I am an American violist and violinist, and I teach in English and French. I just moved to Montpellier to join the Opera Orchestra of Montpellier as an Alto second soliste. I am a graduate of The Juilliard School, a former academist with the Kammerakademie Potsdam, and a former violist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. I teach both viola and violin, from beginner to advanced levels, children and adults. I am also available for practice help sessions or one time coachings. I grew up learning through the Suzuki method, so I teach with an emphasis on developing a good ear as well as good instrumental technique. The most important thing I want my students to develop is a love for music in all its diverse forms and the instrumental technique that will allow them to involve themselves in that musical world! No matter what your goal is in taking lessons, I look forward to working with you or your child and discovering music together!

Hello, my name is Julia! I am an American/English violist and violinist, and I am living in Montpellier and working as an Alto second soliste with the Montpellier Opera Orchestra. I am a teacher, performer, and artist, and have been teaching since 2016. I grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, but have also lived in San Francisco, Paris, and Vienna. I studied viola at The Juilliard School in New York City and took several pedagogy courses there. I'm an established, qualified, and experienced violin teacher who has worked in London for the last 26 years. I'm now back in Belgium for some new musical adventures, as well as to meet new students.

I welcome students from the age of four to adults. I have a real passion for transmitting my love of music, and I like to have a creative, playful and holistic approach to teaching. I also play the piano and often use it for aural training or to accompany my students (or do violin duets). I do believe that music is not just for competitions or exams but a skill for life that can bring tremendous joy, discoveries, friends and fun along the way. Learning an instrument is also a great way to foster different qualities such as patience, diligence, presence, resilience, deep listening and the ability to express and share our emotions with others.

Having explored many different violin methods and styles, I take a different approach according to each student. I like to teach a solid classical technique with some scales, studies and pieces, but there are many different ways to make music enjoyable or find other paths depending on the student's goal.

Although I was trained classically in Belgian Conservatoires and the Guildhall School of Music, I do like to teach a variety of music that is not just classical (Celtic, world, klezmer, jazz, tango, film music, pop...).
I often encourage my students to compose or improvise freely. In the last two decades, I have led many youth orchestras and violin workshops and worked for many different primary and secondary schools in England.

A very progressive method by ear to develop accuracy, memory and the ability to free up one's playing in order to be able to adapt it to very different or new styles.
I focus first on the plasticity of the sound at the same time as the awareness of rhythm takes place, the accuracy comes of itself as well as the obviousness of the good bow strokes which bring this expressiveness, these colours, these accents and these variations of intensity so specific to the violin.
Each student has a particular character, some have by nature a nervous tendency, others who have a bow that is too choppy need to make their playing more fluid, still others are naturally hyper relaxed, (as was Stéphane Grappelli, which is why he was praised by the greatest classical virtuosos, who envied him this predisposition).
Without sheet music, some people get stuck, unable to organically integrate melodic lines, rhythm, and musicality into the appropriate style. This is very common, which is why it's essential to play primarily by ear. For those who don't know how, it comes gradually; it's always the case, and it's important and reassuring to be aware of this in order to progress more easily.
Some have to work on their speed of execution, while others will have to concentrate on the stability of their sound over a longer bow stroke and the different speeds of vibrato...

All the necessary synchronizations for playing the violin fully must be acquired, regardless of the students' initial abilities. These are the first steps, which can differ according to individual temperaments. Moreover, it is these temperaments that shape their personality and tastes in a certain way, becoming their hallmark, and sometimes even their Achilles' heel, with which they will always be more or less at odds. This, in fact, represents a very beneficial and invigorating support, serving as powerful reference points for navigating challenging hurdles. Indeed, one often has to encounter obstacles to have the joy of knowing how to overcome them! And mastering the countless techniques of the violin requires facing them, ultimately leading to intense moments of fulfillment!
