(High School) Experimental Particle Physics - Exploring cosmic rays from the comfort of your living room
Welcome to an exciting journey into the enigmatic world of cosmic rays! This high school-level course is designed to introduce you to the captivating realm of cosmic rays, particles which travel vast distances through the cosmos before reaching earth. This course blends hands-on data analysis with a comprehensive understanding of the theory behind these high-energy particles.
Throughout this course, you'll delve into the mysteries of cosmic rays, investigating their origins, detection, and interactions with our atmosphere. Engage in practical experiments and data analysis using real cosmic ray data collected from ground-based detectors, unraveling the patterns and characteristics of these elusive particles.
The curriculum is divided in a balanced way between theoretical knowledge and practical application. You'll explore fundamental physics concepts essential to understanding cosmic rays, including particle interactions, (very basic) relativity, quantum mechanics, and astrophysics. Lectures, discussions, and interactive sessions will deepen your understanding of these theoretical foundations and their relevance to cosmic ray research.
Do not panic! All the theory is presented in a very engaging way, adapted to the technical level to each student.
Key Topics:
* Introduction to Cosmic Rays: Origins, Composition, and Detection Methods
* Introduction to particle physics detection techniques (with real particle detector examples)
* Data Collection and Analysis (python or C/C++): Hands-on Experience with Real Cosmic Ray Data
* Astrophysical Implications: Cosmic Rays and the Universe
* Advanced Topics (for the very enthusiastic): Cosmic ray astrophysics and state-of-the-art detectors used currently in the research world.
Class Format:
In the basic variant, this course will blend theory lectures with computer-based data analysis. For the very enthusiastic students, there is also a possibility to build their own particle detector.
Assessment:
Assessment will be based on a combination of individual and group projects, quizzes, data analysis reports, and a final presentation or research paper that showcases your understanding of cosmic rays, both theoretically and practically.
Prerequisites:
Curiosity! The only pre-requisite for this course is the curiosity of how our universe works, and what can we do as humans to understand it as much as possible!
Join me on this cosmic adventure, where theoretical exploration meets empirical investigation, and together, let's unravel the secrets of these cosmic messengers!

About Me
Currently I am a full time researcher in experimental particle physics, based at the university of Geneva, CH. I love particles and especially I love to explore different methods trough which we can detect them.During my continuous education I designed and constructed tens of detectors, passing my knowledge to students with various backgrounds: from pharmacy/business to highly specialised physics master/Ph.D. student.
I love to talk about research and the universe itself, and I consider that the only moment when research reaches its goal is when knowledge is successfully passed towards the younger generations.
During my career I have been based (and still am) at several world leading institutes, including CERN and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI).
Outside research, my life revolves around cycling and mountain biking, having obtained the title of national champion at amateur level in my country.
Education
BSc/MSci -> University of Birmingham, UK:Here I obtained the title of master in particle phyiscs and cosmology. My masters project involved acquiring data in a more efficient way at one of the biggest experiments from CERN: NA62.
Ph.D -> University of Geneva, CH.
Based in the particle physics (neutrino) group, here I designed, constructed, and analsed the data of a novel particle detector with improved resolution.

Private lessons in mathematics - physics - chemistry
Student in scientific preparatory class at the lycée du Parc, for several years giving private lessons in math, physics and chemistry, I realized how nice helping students in the field of education was. This is why I offer you my help in these subjects throughout the summer at flexible hours.
From small classes to high school, I will be able to adapt specifically to the needs of each student, in particular by writing myself exercise subjects that best correspond to the skills of each student as well as those expected from the program.
I apply myself during each course to establish a rigor necessary for the success of the students as well as to develop a scientific curiosity so as to allow the students to progress autonomously thereafter.
In this particular situation of health crisis, many students were unable to work in conditions as pleasant as desired. I will of course adapt to everyone's situations (face-to-face or by videoconference / virtual board) during this summer so that each student can find a level corresponding to the expectations of the program for next year.

I understand that not all teachers excel in teaching Engineering and Mathematics courses and explaining their importance to students. Courses with strong mathematical backgrounds may become boring for students who lack a solid mathematical basis. To address this, I take a student-centered approach, starting from the basics to actively engage all students, including those with weaker mathematical backgrounds. I also provide practical examples to demonstrate the real-world significance of what they are learning, inspiring and fostering their interest in the subject matter.
If you have any additional questions before starting a class, please feel free to ask me. I am here to assist! :)
Private coding / programming lessons with python
Python is one of the best, if not the best, language to start learning programming. It is also one of the most widely used languages today, especially in cutting-edge areas such as machine learning.
This popularity means that Python is constantly evolving. It offers a wide range of tools and libraries, which are free and very varied.
As an aeronautical engineer, I like to share my knowledge and derive satisfaction from it by teaching and motivating others.
I'm used to working with people of different ages. I believe in the importance of segmenting learning, visualizing progress, setting concrete goals and practicing regularly.
Beyond these general principles, there is no magic rule or method. Some approaches work with some students but not with others. Adaptation to individual needs is therefore the main objective of private lessons. So I will do my best to find what motivates and helps my student.

Tutoring in physics and mathematics, primary to university level
During a regular school curriculum, the material to be assimilated can be considerable, so much so that many concepts are only understood superficially, just enough to pass an exam. In my opinion, it is essential to establish a solid foundation before building new knowledge. The course is therefore structured as follows:
- Review of relevant physical and mathematical concepts prior to the course.
- Course overview: We identify the key concepts, what is well understood and less well understood by the student, in which case misunderstandings are addressed.
- Practice: We put new concepts into practice through a series of exercises aimed at anchoring the learning.
- Summary: I like to conclude each session with a discussion where the roles are reversed: the student explains the concepts covered in their own words. It is often by trying to teach in turn that we highlight our misunderstandings — and really consolidate our knowledge! "If you cannot explain something simply, it is because you have not understood it well." - Albert Einstein - Written record: I give lessons via videoconference, with a tablet and stylus as a visual aid. Notes are taken on Notability and are shared at the end of the session.
