PERCUSSION LESSONS: cuban, brazilian, cajon, drums

Hello everybody! Welcome to my profile!

Have you always wanted to know more about rhythm, percussion and drums? Then you are in the right place! :)

My name is Giovanni, I'm an italian percussionist currently living in The Netherlands and studying at Codarts music school in Rotterdam.

Latin music is the field I explored and studied the most, especially music coming from Cuba and Brazil: two different and at the same time similar worlds that boast an incredible and extremely interesting music culture.
Talking about Cuban music, my main instruments are congas, bongos and timbales, together with all small percussion (guiro, maracas, clave, shekere). I will guide you through the different music styles that developed in this wonderful island during the past 200 years, such as salsa, son, rumba, cha-cha-cha, mambo, songo among many others.
About the Brazilian side, I can teach you how to learn to play the pandeiro, in all its different styles and rhythms, together with the timbau, the repique, the dobras, the surdo and many other instruments that belong to this amazing tradition.

In my musical career, I also got to play and studied other types of percussion that belong to other traditions. To name one, the cajon, originally coming from Perù and later incorporated in spanish flamenco, is another fascinating instrument, and incredibly versatile when it comes to play many styles of music, especially western pop and funk music: it can really function as a substitute for the drums!

Talking about drums, I will be happy to guide you through the study of this marvelous instrument as well, starting from the basic techniques until the study of all the rhythmic possibilities that this instrument gives.

About Me

ABOUT ME

As I said, my name is Giovanni, I'm an italian percussionist currently living in The Netherlands. Rhythm has flowed in my veins since I was a kid, when my mother bought me an african drum on the beach. Since then, I never stopped playing and studying with teachers around Italy, until I came to the Netherlands and continued my studies at Codarts music school, where I'm studying Latin music.

Music is something that can really change your life, whether this is going to be your job or just a passion!

Music, but especially rhythm, is everywhere: walking is rhythm, the heartbeat is rhythm, everything we do is actually related to rhythm and it's never too late to start exploring this fantastic world.

Do you find yourself staring at drummers and percussionists wondering how they make those crazy fills and rhythms? Do you want to learn step by step how to develop your rhythmic instinct? I'm here to guide you through a journey that will lead you to understand and play different instruments and music styles, starting from your interests and suggestions.

LESSONS

The purpose of my lesson is to make something fun out of the tools and instruments we have, but always maintaining a clear direction, based on the level of the student. My focus is to share the experience and knowledge I accumulated in my whole life, trying to stimulate curiosity in every person that comes to my lesson as well as pushing him or her to understand what are his or her visions and purposes.

I hope I can transmit to you the passion I have for music and rhythm.

To become a good percussionist, it's essential to start from the study of the technique, as sound is very important when it comes to play percussion. Also, every type of percussion has its own technique but there are some tools that, once you master them, are going to make your life way easier when you switch between different instruments.

Step by step we will move forward, learning rhythms, patterns, styles, which will eventually lead us to explore the wonderful world of improvisation, an essential step for everyone who want to make a qualitative jump in the studying of any percussive instrument.

I have some years of experience in teaching private lessons and all the times I'm impressed with the skills and passion that my students put in my lessons. This is why I love teaching to students of all ages and levels, because everybody can bring something special coming from his own personal experience.

Looking forward to start this musical journey together! :)

You'll learn how to move your limbs to play a nice drum groove, you'll discover the rudiments on the snare-drum which later you will start apply to the drumset. You will learn to recognize which instruments in the drumset makes you fall in love for the drum beat of your favorite tune. Also you will learn how to read rhythm and a drum score! Very soon you'll be playing along your favorite song!Let's get it started!!! Have you played for a while and you would like to improve your skills and to learn new rhythms? Good!I'll do my best to help you improving your actual skills. Together, we'll look at the diverse hand and foot techniques exist as tools to improve our own sound on the drumset. Remember that it's not about speed, but awareness of our gestures and how these can influence the sound we won't project through this marvellous instrument. Have you ever heard of "Finger Control", Moeller Technique", "Push and Pulll", "Heel-Toe Technique"? Probably your tired of the usual 4/4 rock drum beat and you would like to learn more spicy drum grooves...well I can show you very nice drum beat influenced by latin music. You could find very fun and interesting excercies for improving your coordination while learing intriguing drum beats! But also...you are a fan of progressive music but you're having troubles playing that weird odd-meter...I'll show you how simple and easy can be to play that 5/8! Do you have a solid rhythmic fundation and you want to get in touch with Jazz or Latin music? Learning a language, especially if you are not a mother-tongue, is very hard. Generally I believe that to learn how to express yourself through your instrument is a life-long learning process. For this reason don't worry and keep having fun every day!I've left the harbour for this journey some years ago and I still see the line of the horizon very far...Why don't you get on my boat? I can show you the first steps you need to take for applying your technical skills and coordination in these styles. We can listening to recordings and to check how the drummer accompanies his band mates, how he expresses his solo ideas. We can transcribe comping ideas, solo ideas, and of course I'll show the approach I use to learn and to digest this information to make it mine. I'm really looking forward to your questions and to discover new recordings with you!

Non-formal Latin classes. Multilingual teacher with 10 years of experience. Pronunciation, historical linguistics, semantics.
Contrary to popular belief, learning Latin is not like learning the phone book by heart. I offer you Latin lessons that are unlike any other. There are two types of courses. Here is an analogy to illustrate their respective approaches: If you take the train back and forth every day and don't have time to wait long at the platform, imagine that you only have two options: 1) Learn the schedules by heart. 2) Note that the train arrives every ten minutes and that a train arrives for example at 7:00 a.m. In school pedagogy, in study notebooks and in ordinary courses, it is the first approach which is adopted - in the courses that I offer you, it is the second because it is more economical and faster. My offer is aimed at both students and adults who want to learn the Latin language or deepen their knowledge without time-consuming detours through the insanities of school methods which do not produce results. Learning is easy but unlearning what has become a bad habit is extremely difficult. All the more important it is to learn the right reflexes as early as possible. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning in a positive state of mind. I offer individual or group Latin lessons (2 to 5 people). The methods are based on cognitive sciences and in particular historical linguistics. What will not be the subject of the course: learn lists of verbs; learn lists of nouns with their gender; learn words with their translations; memory card game; doing school exercises; follow the program in a notebook; impose French grammar on the Latin language. What matters to me in particular: motivate my student and give him a learning rhythm; encourage creativity; make friends with language; letters and their sounds strengthen your memory by working on the phonological loop; teach construction plans instead of having people learn sentences by heart; explain how the language works to make my student independent as quickly as possible; breaking preconceived ideas such as the gammatical gender would have a link with the biological gender, the accusative would be a direct complement and the dative an indirect complement, the verbs would be irregular, the declension would be random and therefore to be learned with each verb... ; place practice at the center and articulate grammar around practice. In the context of a first course, you can get a well-founded idea of my pedagogy. I look forward to meeting you.

Latin Course: Translation, Civilization, Grammar...
I adapt to your needs, whether you have difficulties in middle school or high school (both optional or specialized) in Latin courses, whether you want to translate a particular text, whether you are looking to learn the language from A to Z or simply to broaden your culture with civilization courses, I am the one for you! Every student is different, so it is essential to adapt to both your personality and your needs in order to establish a working method that is beneficial to you.

Latin and Greek for ESO, Baccalaureate and university entrance exam preparation students.
I am a Classical Philology student at the University of Valencia, with great teaching skills and a knack for explaining things. Classical languages are essential for learning our own language and a great help for learning other diverse languages. My teaching methodology is to consolidate the foundations of the subject with simple but well-explained examples, with the goal of improving the understanding of languages from their roots and helping the student acquire fundamental knowledge for continuing or deepening their study of the subject.

All-styles drumming, percussion and music theory lessons
I've been a drummer for almost 20 years now, and I've graduated from both Brussels Royal Conservatory of Music (classical percussion) and Mons Royal Conservatory of Music (pedagogy). I've been teaching percussion, the drums and music theory for a little more than 4 years now. My students are always the real actors of my courses. No matter what instrument you are learning, be it percussion, the drums, marimba, vibraphone, or music theory, I always pay close attention to your personal goals, and together we devise a unique learning plan that adapts to your strengths as well as your weaknesses. My courses are aimed at anyone who is willing to put effort into learning music; children or adults, complete beginners or more advanced players who wish to receive additional feedback and insight. Autonomy, creativity, curiosity and listening skills are the true pillars of my methodology. We pay as much attention to technique as to musicality or listening skills. Additionally, I provide tailored exercises, on-demand sheet music and transcriptions according to your needs, as well as additional resources and recommendations on my website to nourish your musical life and journey. I teach the following: -the drums, in various styles (rock, funk, jazz, shuffle, pop, world music, latin music, on-demand songs) and forms (Moeller technique, speed, rudiments, syncopation, breaks, solo, independence, musicality, double pedal, push-pull, etc.); -percussion (2 or 4-mallet marimba and vibraphone, xylophone, timpani, cajón, hand percussion), in both contemporary and classical music styles; -music theory, which can and will easily be integrated into my drumming or percussion courses, or can be taught as a separate course for music students who are seeking remedial education; -harmony; -sight reading techniques; -perfect and relative pitch (experimental)
