I moved to the US a few years ago for professional reasons, it was very difficult to apply everything I had learned in traditional English schools to my everyday life. I quickly realized that the system that schools often use does not reflect the human learning process. As children, we first learn a few words and over time we develop language skills through mistakes and a fearless approach to the language. It is only later, at school, that our communication skills are refined. So why should we memorize the correct tenses and sentence constructions right from the start if we can not express ourselves yet? When we learn a new language, we often spend a lot of time constructing the perfect sentence in our head instead of speaking it.

Teaching Spanish through conversation has proven to be very rewarding in the past. Not only because I could see that what helped me could also help many others, but also because it was very rewarding to see people enjoy not being afraid to communicate, make mistakes, and develop their learning potential.

I hold a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from UMass Dartmouth and have also pursued studies at IEFC in Barcelona. My time studying in Barcelona greatly enriched my knowledge and skills, as well as broadened my global perspective. The interdisciplinary education I received at UMass Dartmouth, coupled with various personal and professional development opportunities, has given me the confidence to take on complex challenges. Additionally, my exposure to different cultures has fostered a strong sense of inclusive collaboration with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

I am an absolute language enthusiast, who is as well lucky to pursue her greatest hobby at the university - I study to become a teacher of both English and German. I specialize in teaching mostly through conversation, during which I as well explain the main principles of grammar. Why so? I do not want my students to be overwhelmed by grammar and only get a minor option to speak and use what they just learned. This way of teaching as well allows me (and my students) to get to know each other better, which I find important.

I prefer eye to eye lessons to the ones through Skype, as I believe that it makes a great difference when you know your language partner in person, not only through a laptop screen.

The way I tailor each lesson according to the specific student's needs is by beginning to establish the level in which they are at, and then ask them what it is they want to achieve: whether they want me to help them polish up their level of communication at work, within social environments, or even prepare for a specific exam or a performance. Once this is clear, I prepare the lessons in a way that I find is suitable for their objectives, always paying close attention to their performance in order to keep shaping each class in a way that a steady sense of progress is achieved. The classes will always be interactive because I believe this is the best way to ensure continuous interest, and therefore motivation, and that it will help me understand which areas are most difficult for each student so that I can keep shaping the lessons in their favour.
