About Me
Hello! I'm Emer - a graduate in Classics and History of Art, I am passionate about everything to do with the ancient world.

I have been giving private tuition in Classics since 2014. In that time, I've had the privilege of receiving world-class education myself, first at Cambridge, and then at the Courtauld Institute of Art. I've had a fantastic education in all things ancient, and I'm zealous about sharing my knowledge with open-minded students who love to learn.
Education
Classics (BA Hons), University of Cambridge (Class of 2018)
Including: Latin, Ancient Greek, Art History, Ancient History, Archaeology

HIstory of Art (MA), Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London (Class of 2019)
Experience / Qualifications
BA (Hons) Classics, University of Cambridge (2014-18)
In my first three years, I learned Latin and Ancient Greek, and read a broad range of literature in both languages. I also took papers in ancient history, philosophy, art and archaeology, and linguistics. In my final year, I focused on Greek and Roman art and archaeology.

MA History of Art, Courtauld Institute of Art (2018-19)
During my MA, I focused on the art of the later Roman empire, as well as the early Byzantine and Medieval period. I studied art from around the eastern Mediterranean, including Italy, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, and Jerusalem, as well as that of Serbia, Georgia, and Armenia. I eventually wrote my dissertation on medieval Venetian architecture. I also took modules in modern and contemporary art theory and criticism.

Digital Classics and Cultural Heritage, Institute of Classical Studies, University of London (2019-20)

Outside of an educational setting, I have held internships and work placements at many cultural and educational institutions, including the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and Sotheby's in London.

May 2026: In this Latin course, I offer "Common Entrance at 13+" training (including scholarship papers) for those students who have studied Latin for one or two years, and would like to revise, do translations and read from fun books such as Minimus or So you really want to learn Latin. Plenty of cultural stories and mythology in the mix, besides battles and august men. A basic understanding of grammar (or willingness to learn) expected. I offer you a new learning experience.

To the uninitiated, a grammar book seems to be written in another language because the meaning of the words is incomprehensible. In a down-to-earth way, I'll translate the grammar into familiar words. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning while having a positive mindset.

You can book a complete course with regular sessions or individual lessons to overcome a specific problem, such as pronunciation or a particular point in grammar.

Learning a foreign language is not a linear process that consists of memorising a list of words, and speaking a foreign language is not an oral translation exercise.

There are two types of approaches to acquiring knowledge:

When asked what year follows 1999, you can immediately answer 2000 without having to think for a long time and, above all, without having memorised each number individually, starting with 1, 2, 3 ... You know that numbers are formed according to a certain pattern. With only ten digits, you can form an infinite number of numbers and always know which number comes next.

When it comes to the alphabet, words and sentences, it's more or less the same, but school pedagogy, school textbooks and regular lessons still follow the rote learning approach. In the lessons I propose, you will learn to use patterns because this is more efficient and faster.

Learning is easy, but unlearning bad habits is extremely difficult. This makes it all the more important to learn the right reflexes as early as possible.

My offer is aimed at both teenagers and adults who want to acquire a solid foundation of the Latin language without the time-consuming diversions of absurd school methods.

I offer individual or group lessons for Latin. The methods are based on cognitive science and, in particular, comparative linguistics. My flexible programme can be tailored to your individual needs.

What is particularly important to me:

motivating my students and help them establish a learning rhythm;
encouraging their creativity;
helping them become more familiar with the language;
teaching them the letters and their sounds;
strengthening their memory by training their phonological loop;
teaching sentence building plans instead of memorising sentences;
explaining how language works so that my students can become independent as quickly as possible.

I look forward to meeting you.

I understand how many students think and why they get stuck, while teachers often struggle with this.
I can therefore convey complex material in a personal way, using examples, visualizations, comparisons, etc.

I often hear after an explanation:
- Oooooh, now I get it!
- Why doesn't the teacher just say this?
- That actually makes sense, yes...

My way of teaching is purely aimed at helping with things that are difficult or unclear.
We sit down and I ask, "What do you need to know for the test?" Then I'm assigned a few theory blocks, and we quickly figure out where things are going wrong, and I make sure it's clear.

A lesson usually lasts until all the material is understood. If that's too much, we usually stop after 1 or 1.5 hours, or when we run out of energy.

I teach Latin and Ancient Greek through a reading-based approach that brings the languages to life. Rather than memorising rules in isolation, students build grammatical understanding and vocabulary by engaging with authentic texts — discovering how the language actually works in context. Along the way, we explore the rich cultural and historical worlds behind the words, connecting language learning with the ideas, stories, and societies that shaped the classical world.

For Italian, I focus on practical communication and real-world listening skills. Using podcasts and conversational practice alongside structured grammar resources, students gain confidence in speaking and understanding Italian as it is used in everyday life. My aim is to make language learning both effective and enjoyable, helping students progress steadily while developing a genuine connection with the language.
