My name is Tommie. I was born and raised in the UK and moved to Finland 5 years ago to pursue my master’s degree in music. I hold over 10 years' experience teaching English, during which time I've had dozens of private students across all ages. I'm a published writer and music journalist with a background in academic writing and proof-reading. I’m also a competent Finnish speaker, which can be especially useful to identify tell-tale Finnish patterns of speech.

Perhaps you want to strengthen your grasp of English grammar, or expand your vocabulary. You may even want to just get more comfortable speaking. My name is Tommie. I was born and raised in the UK and moved to Finland 5 years ago to pursue my master’s degree in music. I also work as a musician, performing, recording and for various project work. In the Finnish winter I enjoy skiing and skating, while in summer I'm a keen runner and swimmer.

If you've lost confidence in English or German, want to start from scratch or want to perfect already present knowledge, I can help you achieve your goals, drawing on 20+ years of successful teaching.

I spent my childhood and teens moving back and forth between Germany and America (attending local schools) as a French citizen, so in addition to being a native speaker of both languages, I am also sensitive to individual concerns that can come up e.g. shyness, difficulty expressing oneself, etc. I have taught private students from all walks of life in Germany, France, Hungary, UK, USA, and now Finland, focusing on anything from run-of-the-mill tutoring to specific needs e.g. confidence in public speaking, social settings related to work, preparation for college / grad school.

My method is to motivate students by setting challenges that let them see their own success. Each country also has its own method of teaching and learning, which can greatly assist in acquiring language skills.

You will gain confidence, speak with ease, learn to speak as naturally as a native speaker and know the difference between their / they're / there at the very least.

Different rates apply, depending on what you are looking for. Duration of a class will vary according to your needs, so feel free to let me know what you are looking for, whether you're absolutely sure or just want to dip your toe in the water.

I specialize in teaching English for TOEFL exams, as well as for high school students. If you have anything you are not doing well in, please do let me know before the session. For TOEFL takers, tips for how to score well can be provided during the class, as well as some practice exercises.

English is an international language and it is never too late to brush up your conversation skills to chat with friends, for a job interview, to participate in meetings or pass a test to prove your language skills. I have a student-centred approach based on a mutual discussion about what goals you want to achieve and the duration to realize them. I give classes on an online webcam, but I am also flexible to travel to Helsinki and Espoo region if the need so arises. So what are you waiting for?
