Spoken / Conversational Latin - any level + ND friendly

The quickest and easiest way to supercharge your Latin language skills is to use the language yourself! We'll be learning how to become conversational in Latin, with as much active practice as possible - soon, you'll be able to read texts left to right, unseen!

I'll start at whatever level you're comfy with - whether that's from absolute scratch, or whether you've already done Latin courses at school or university and are looking for a bit of extra help!

I'm very familiar with neurodivergency (I'm neurodivergent myself!), and I know how important flexibility + accommodation is when it comes to working around neurodivergency, mental health conditions, disabilities, or any other circumstances - do let me know if you need anything, and I'll do my best to sort things out! I'm also LGBT friendly (and specifically trans + nb friendly - let me know any name or pronoun preferences, and we can have a bit of fun figuring out how they'd best map onto Latin!).

About Me

I'm an Ex-Oxford Classics student (I studied for three years, though didn't finish the course due to poor health), and would love to make tutoring my full-time profession! I'm passionate about using Active Methods for language learning, combined with data-driven approaches to prioritising what vocabulary you *actually* need to memorise.

I'm a certified nerd (I speak Esperanto, have made myself a Klein Bottle Hat, and am learning to unicycle), have personal experience with neurodivergency / chronic mental health issues (so I know how important it is to accommodate them, and I have my own techniques to work around them!), and I'm LGBT friendly (+ specifically trans / nb friendly!).

Education

3 years' study towards Classics degree at Brasenose College, Oxford (received 2:1 in last official exams, + Firsts in all Latin exams, but did not finish course due to health problems)

A* in Latin A-level; A in Classics A-Level; A in Maths A-Level

A* in Latin GCSE; A* in German GCSE; 9 in Maths GCSE

Experience / Qualifications

I've been tutoring since February 2024. I have three years' experience studying Classics at Oxford, and got a First in all my Latin exams. My original + translated Latin poetry has been published in Alexandria, the Oxford undergraduate Classics journal, and I attended the Latin speaking circle meetings (well, until Covid). I also did consistently well in my Ancient Greek exams (always a First, apart from one 2:1), though haven't written poetry in it (yet).

I have five years' experience translating German encyclopaedia articles, and received 100% UMS in my German GCSE.

I use Brazilian Portuguese every day to speak to my partner and his family, and continue to spend at least half an hour each day studying the language. Although I do not have any formal qualifications, I've spent three months living in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and translated a novel from Portuguese into English last year, for fun. I'm conversational, and have the learning process fresh in my mind: I know what I found trickiest, and I'll do my best to make your own learning process smoother than mine was!

I got an A in my Maths A-Level, I've been published in Chalkdust - a fun maths magazine! -, and I gave a workshop on Topology as part of a convention in Esperanto. I like numbers!

Kevin
Non-formal Latin classes. Multilingual teacher with 10 years of experience. Pronunciation, historical linguistics, semantics.
Contrary to popular belief, learning Latin is not like learning the phone book by heart. I offer you Latin lessons that are unlike any other. There are two types of courses. Here is an analogy to illustrate their respective approaches: If you take the train back and forth every day and don't have time to wait long at the platform, imagine that you only have two options: 1) Learn the schedules by heart. 2) Note that the train arrives every ten minutes and that a train arrives for example at 7:00 a.m. In school pedagogy, in study notebooks and in ordinary courses, it is the first approach which is adopted - in the courses that I offer you, it is the second because it is more economical and faster. My offer is aimed at both students and adults who want to learn the Latin language or deepen their knowledge without time-consuming detours through the insanities of school methods which do not produce results. Learning is easy but unlearning what has become a bad habit is extremely difficult. All the more important it is to learn the right reflexes as early as possible. With my tailor-made teaching you will accelerate your learning in a positive state of mind. I offer individual or group Latin lessons (2 to 5 people). The methods are based on cognitive sciences and in particular historical linguistics. What will not be the subject of the course: learn lists of verbs; learn lists of nouns with their gender; learn words with their translations; memory card game; doing school exercises; follow the program in a notebook; impose French grammar on the Latin language. What matters to me in particular: motivate my student and give him a learning rhythm; encourage creativity; make friends with language; letters and their sounds strengthen your memory by working on the phonological loop; teach construction plans instead of having people learn sentences by heart; explain how the language works to make my student independent as quickly as possible; breaking preconceived ideas such as the gammatical gender would have a link with the biological gender, the accusative would be a direct complement and the dative an indirect complement, the verbs would be irregular, the declension would be random and therefore to be learned with each verb... ; place practice at the center and articulate grammar around practice. In the context of a first course, you can get a well-founded idea of my pedagogy. I look forward to meeting you.

Latin, Ancient Greek, and Biology tutoring classes
I have several years of experience tutoring students of different age groups in Latin and Ancient Greek. I am deeply passionate about these languages and I enjoy helping students improving at them. I believe that understanding the structure of a sentence is fundamental when approaching these languages, therefore this is an important focus for me. During the class I always dedicate some time to reasoning and translating sentences together with the student. I have a BS in pharmaceutical biotechnology and I am currently a master student in Medicine. I find biology very fascinating and I have been tutoring it for years now. Depending on the topic and the student's needs, I structure the lessons differently. I usually explain the topic and use tools such as spaced repetition, notes, conceptual maps to make sure that the student has understood.

Giorgia
PhD holder with 15 years of teaching experience, offers private lessons in Latin and Ancient Greek.
Hello, My name is Giorgia. I offer private lessons in Latin and Greek to those who want to improve their translation skills in classical languages. I have been dedicated to translating classical languages for over 25 years and offering private lessons for over 20 years. I have extensive experience in classical languages and literature. In fact, I attended the "liceo classico" in Italy, a country whose centuries-old philological tradition requires students on this course to acquire a solid competence in translation from Latin and Greek, as well as a broad knowledge of classical literature, by devoting nine hours a week to the study of classical languages, for the entire duration of the five-year course. I began teaching classical languages during my university years, while also studying other humanistic disciplines, such as philosophy and literature. In fact, I hold an Italian doctorate in philosophy and am currently completing an American PhD in comparative literature. I have never stopped offering private lessons in Latin and Greek. My translation method, tested over twenty years of experience which have confirmed its effectiveness, aims to enable students to acquire mastery of a rigorous translation technique based on the recognition of the quasi-scientific "accuracy" of classical languages and which, once acquired, limits the possibility of making translation errors to almost zero. This technique is based on respect for the syntactic structure of Greek and Latin sentences and on a careful examination of the arrangement of the linguistic elements which constitute them. By teaching mastery of the different stages of analysis of the Latin and/or Greek sentence, the translation technique that I propose allows the student to: - speed up translation time - limit concerns related to the apparent incomprehensibility of classical texts - strengthen knowledge of Latin and/or Greek grammar - acquire the correct method of searching for words in the dictionary - benefit from increasing familiarity in constructing the general meaning of the text to be translated - broaden one's knowledge of the classical cultures which are the basis of our humanist culture. This technique is aimed at all students who wish to master translation, also to succeed in the Latin and Greek exams for the Agrégation and CAPES competitions in Modern and Classical Literature, and at those who wish to cultivate this study in order to better understand our humanist culture which has its roots in classical literature. Thank you for your attention! Giorgia

Latin as a Living Language: from Zero to Cicero. Latin for Linguists and Polyglots
💜 Salvē quīcumque haec legis et linguam Latīnam discere cupis! 💜 Greetings to you, dear reader of these lines! Some say that I have travelled here from Ancient Rome to help bring the Latin language back to life. "But", you say, "Latin is dead and has been for 1.5 millenia!" If that's what you think, let me change your mind! =) I offer classes for all levels and topics, including but not limited to: ◈ Latin for complete beginners taught through guided reading and discussion, with a minimum of translation. You will be using the language to learn the language from the beginning; ◈ Latin for those who have studied grammar, but still don't know the language itself; ◈ Latin for those ready to approach non-adapted literature; ◈ Latin for those who can already read, but want to learn to speak and use the language actively; ◈ Latin for those who want to understand poetry (from Virgil and Plautus right up to modern Latin poets) and quantitative metrics intuitively, in the same way as they were understood by the Romans themselves; ◈ Latin for researchers, historians and anyone working with Latin texts and primary sources or writing academic papers; ◈ Latin for linguists: I have deep theoretical and practical knowledge of the phonetics and phonology of Latin as well as Latin historical linguistics. ◈ Latin for those not ready to commit, but interested in learning the Reconstructed Classical Pronunciation. Or the traditional Italian (aka Ecclesiastical), or the Germanic-Slavic, or even the Middle French pronunciation - whatever takes your fancy :-) ◈ conversational Latin and composition practice. 💡 About me and my lessons: I've long been part of the international community of Latin speakers, have produced videos in Latin and resources for learning it, as well co-authoring a graded poetry reader "Erictho: Tartarorum Terror" aimed at students who wish to transition away from reading adapted texts and tackle authentic poetry without the help of dictionaries or translation. Thanks to my deep interest in phonetics and phonology, I have put major emphasis on researching, modelling and teaching the sounds and rhythms of Republican Latin speech in order to make Latin poetry and prose sound the way the authors intended. I teach Latin through Latin using the singular series "Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata" as well as various adapted and authentic texts. The goal of my lessons is simple: holistic acquisition of the language in order to allow you, the learner, to read Latin fluently, understand it at a deep level, and be able to communicate in it should the opportunity arise. Except at early stages, grammar instruction will also take place in Latin. 𓆩♡𓆪

Ecclesiatical Latin: Reading approach and grammar lessons ( in Latin)
I will teach you Latin using a reading method, I will show you how grammar has not to be a barrier; little by little you may pass from simple texts to higher ones. Learning latin is a long journey. I prefer to teach reading Latin first, and then after considerable time, grammar; this is somewhat a natural method, pursuing mastery and comprehension rather than linguistic analysis. After being a able to read, we may also add the study latin grammarians beginning with short expositions- all in latin! My niche is Catholic Ecclesiastical Latin; my reading materials focus on that area.

Ian
Living Latin through Comprehensible Input (Contemporary and Medieval Latin)
You will learn Latin the way it was meant to be learned - through conversation! Medieval scholars and contemporary language researchers alike advocate the use of dialogues and comprehensible input for language acquisition, and it most certainly works! As opposed to the "memorise grammar rules and then babble them in front of the class" approach that was demonstrated by the infamous "Romanēs eunt domus" scene from Monty Python's "The Life of Brian", you will learn to feel the grammar, so that you will be able to use the different cases of Latin without even thinking about it, just like a native speaker! For this class we will be using the following books, depending on the learner's level: Hans Øreberg's "Lingua Latīna per sē Illustrāta" "Corderiī Colloquia" Erasmus Rask's "Colloquia Familiaria" John C. Traupman Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency I will be the collocutor and I will answer the learner's questions and explain certain oddities solely in Latin (I will use a second language only when the situation calls for it) We will also engage in free-form conversations, discussions of the dialogues, of our life experiences etc so that the learner can apply what they learn to real-life situations and expand their vocabulary

Ancient Greek, Latin and Spanish Language (online and face-to-face)
Hello! I am Andrés and I have a degree in Classical Philology. I teach Latin and ancient Greek classes, at all levels, both for school reinforcement and if you want to learn these two languages for pleasure. I like to teach these subjects based on new methodologies that make learning them more enjoyable and pleasant for the student. In addition, I like to complement the teaching of these languages with culture and history classes, since it is very important to know the context in which we move in each class. Anyway, I adapt to the needs of each student. I also teach Spanish Language and Literature reinforcement classes, both for Primary, ESO, Baccalaureate students, and those who take the University entrance exams. Flexible schedule.

Latin lessons for all levels (beginners, intermediates, advanced, higher education students)-ADULTS
Associate professor, Doctor of Letters (Paris IV Sorbonne), teaches Latin at all levels. This course is aimed at anyone wishing to learn or relearn the Latin language, progressively access literature, history, philosophy, ancient sciences, and approach Latin culture. It is also intended for any pupil or student wishing for support in this subject. Learning the Latin language presupposes a few solid bases of French grammar that we review of course if necessary, before installing Latin grammatical knowledge. Learning Latin develops the rigor and sense of translation.
