TEACHING STYLE:
My classes are light-hearted and highly interactive. People learn best when they’re enjoying themselves and feeling deeply interested, and that is my promise to you. I will correct your mistakes, but I will never shame or embarrass you for making them. My class is a place where people come to learn fast and grow in confidence.
💬 I'm Tom, and I've been teaching English since 2013. Originally I'm from the south of England, and I've been happily living in The Hague, Netherlands since 2021. Before this I lived in Finland, Taiwan and mainland China. I speak a bunch of languages besides English, like Mandarin, Finnish, some French, and a little Japanese. When I'm not teaching, I'm working on my Dutch!
I have a double master's degree in English and Applied Linguistics, and my research focus was how to teach English pronunciation and speaking skills. I won't let you down. 🫡
❗ Very importantly, I will also show you how to study on your own.
I know you won't be my student forever, so I want to prepare you for the future. If you hope to get good at English, it's not enough just to have a tutor once a week – the more time you put into learning English, the better and faster you'll get. I can show you how to easily make digital flashcards, write memorable notes, and use AI in a smart way to teach you English. This way you can keep learning even after our course ends.
DID YOU KNOW?
In English speaking, we usually don't say the word "must". Must is very formal and uncommon unless you're talking about rules ("Passengers must check in and out") or making a confident guess ("You must be Tom!"). Otherwise, must is very old fashioned. Instead, we say "have to" or "need to". In 1965, the Queen said "I must go to the lavatory". Everyone in the 21st century says "I have to go to the toilet." Knowing the differences between formal and informal English is important so you use the right words in the right situations! A native English teacher is the best person to help you with this.
