I have a Master in Financial Management followed by the Specific Teacher Training Program in Economics. After almost ten years of practical experience in both the private and public sector, I switched to (higher) education in 2019. I have been working at Thomas More University of Applied Sciences for two years now, where I teach several courses within the field of accounting and tax (Professional Bachelor Accountancy-Taxation and Graduate Accounting Administration). I am also coordinator of the Graduate Accounting Administration.

The combination of both practical and didactic experience is considered by students to be a huge advantage. So-called theory is easier to remember on the basis of concrete examples. And that is precisely what I have a lot of.

On the basis of exercises and practical cases I try to sketch the whole as clearly as possible for the student. Moreover, I now have a lot of extra exercises and cases at my disposal due to my current position as lecturer within accounting and tax.

In addition to handbooks and other extra teaching materials, I can also offer the student a guideline on the basis of powerpoint slides in which the "theory" is briefly and clearly summarized.
Extra information
I always start with a short introductory session in which the student briefly frames the need for tutoring. Where are the difficulties? What is perceived as difficult? Which basis is already known and understood? Etc. Then I will see which approach will work best. The tutoring is then started in consultation with the student.

The student's own material must therefore be brought along or be available. This is possibly supplemented by me with extras.

About Me
Hello, my name is Lien. 30 years old - girlfriend of Willem and mom van Pol! I play football at Zennester Hombeek and I also follow football closely. I am a supporter of KV Mechelen. I also like to read books and I also know how to enjoy good food with a good glass of wine! :-)

I am a smooth lady who also tries to carry this through in her teaching and dealing with students. Interaction is the key to understanding in my lessons! You can compare it to a ping-pong game in which I always feed back an extra, additional question to the student ... Until the proverbial franc falls and the student has mastered the whole of the subject matter! That's what we do it for, right ?!
Education
In 2012 I obtained my Master in Commercial Sciences with a specialization in Financial Management. In 2013 I added another diploma, namely a Specific Teacher Training Program in Economics.

I am a consultant at the World Bank and a postdoctoral researcher in applied econometrics at the University of Mons in Belgium. PhD in economics from the Free University of Brussels.

Between 2018 and 2024, I helped more than 300 students from all over the world* to pass their econometrics courses and/or master's theses.

ECONOMETRICS COURSE
I help students understand theoretical models (e.g. OLS, Logit, 2SLS, diff-in-diff, time series) and the interpretation of econometric results in a very pedagogical way. I helped 158 of 160 students pass their econometrics courses.

MASTER THESES and PROJECTS
I help students build the database, write the theoretical model and produce empirical results (descriptive statistics, graphs, tests and regressions) using Stata, R Studio, Gretl, E-views or Jamovi.
I also advise on dissertation structure and writing. All the students who have done their theses with me have passed. In addition, 10 of his students have won the best dissertation award.

Are you looking for math tutoring for yourself or for your child/student, from primary school to all levels of secondary education? Then I can help you. I am patient and do more than just help with homework. First we examine together whether the problem is general or there are just a few specific questions.

For some specific questions, we can probably solve the problems with some extra lessons, for example in the run-up to exams or a big test to cross the i's and cross the t's.

For larger problems such as study method problems, we will have to opt for more structural tutoring in consultation with the parents/student (can be once a week/2 weeks/month, for example). I don't have a magic wand, but if the child is motivated, we can really achieve a lot.

Online tutoring is possible, but I prefer more traditional methods: I sit next to the student and we work with pen and paper, with or without the parent nearby (some young people feel calmer if the parent stays nearby, others find it which is embarrassing; I'm also a stranger to the parent, so I understand if you want to stay close). I prefer as little screen time as possible, I can show examples on the computer, for example we can make graphs and calculations in wolfram alpha or I can provide geometric animations in geogebra.

I studied mathematics and teacher training at KULeuven.
I have hundreds of hours of experience in tutoring.
I participated in the summer course for incoming secondary education students who want to test whether their mathematics level is up to standard to start a mathematics or engineering course at university.

You are welcome at my home in Antwerp or I can travel to your home in the wider area around Antwerp. Please let us know if you are interested.

My agenda is not always predictable, but it is quite flexible. If you are interested, please contact me and we will find a time that suits you. I will make time for you.

The Economics 1 course will start with a presentation of the demand and supply economic model in order to provide an analysis of the mechanisms and inner workings of competitive markets (price determination, equilibrium quantity, etc.). It will also be the occasion to investigate the impact on the competitive equilibrium of some public policies such as price control and indirect taxation.
The course will then determine why, and under which conditions, free trade can be viewed as an efficient way to coordinate the actions of specialized economic agents. Through a careful examination of the (utopic) necessary conditions a market must fulfil so as to be considered perfectly competitive, it will be brought to the students' attention that those conditions are seldom (if ever) respected: the course will then provide an overview of several market failures, as well as study in detail several types of imperfect competition.
Finally, the question of the possibility (and the necessity) of public intervention in a market economy will remain a central focus throughout the course.

Part I: Introduction
Chapter 1: "To think like an economist" - basic concepts (Mankiw, chapitres 1 et 2)

Part II: Supply and demand - how markets work
Chapter 3: The market forces of supply and demand (Mankiw, ch. 4, ch. 5)
Chapter 4: Consumers, producers and the efficiency of markets (Mankiw, ch. 7, 8)
Chapter 5: Supply, demand and government policies (Mankiw, ch. 6)

Part III: Market failures under perfect competition
Chapter 6: Externalities (Mankiw, ch.10)
Chapter 7: Public goods and common resources (Mankiw ch. 11)

Part IV: Firm behavior in competitive markets
Chapter 8: The costs of production (Mankiw, ch. 13)
Chapter 9: Firms in competitive markets (Mankiw, ch. 14)

Part V: Imperfect competition
Chapter 10: The monopoly and other examples of imperfect compeition (Mankiw ch. 10, 11)
